Hello

Not a convert. But i plan on converting to Roman Catholicism, or well to be more specific, to attend to a mass to see how it works like, but generally i am a Christian believer. I was wondering what your reasons for finding your way to Christianity was? For me it was because i tried to disprove it many times, but failed to do so. My arguments just didn't hold up. So i just gave up and accepted this religion into my heart. Although i am not 100% at the practice level yet, i try to understand it more.

Looking forward to Christmas soon aswell :twi:

Yeah, it is hard to disprove Christianity because trying to disprove the existence of God is futile just like proving it is futile.  As a believer, I welcome you into the fold.

I'm in a non-denominational church, it's kinda like in between baptist and methodist. I'm thinking about doing catholic one day, but I don't yet. Hmmm...

I've been to a number of different churches, Methodist, Presbyterian, Baptist, Lutheran, Catholic, Pentecostal, Assembly's of God, Greek Orthodox and others.. two things I note of them:  They all exalt Jesus, and they all make ritual more important then it should be, some more so then others..  you can find the Beloved in them all, but you can also get caught in the trap of religion and ritual if you don't pay attention.  This can happen even in churches that don't claim a denomination, if one lets it.

The key is seeking the Divine guidance of the Spirit and rooting yourself in his Word and being willing to discard the concepts and ideas of men regarding His word when it doesn't line up with His truth.. the Spirit is the oil, the Word is the lamp to light your path.. you need both or your going to stumble...fortunately, God is more then willing to pick us up when we mess up, and he knows we will stumble, that's part of what the Cross was all about... He just wants us to keep going and not to give up, even when we stumble and fall.

I was raised Christian and I have just always kept the faith in my own way, I don't go to church though, I can't stand the loud noise and all the people, never could because it always gives me a headache.

What i like about this faith is no matter how many times we fall down in sin, we can be forgiven and learn from those mistakes. Like i have problems when it comes to lust. And i know some people probably have stuff in their life that they struggle with, which is just a part of being human. But even if one fails, aslong as you truly regret it and prays for forgiveness then you are forgiven for it, and you can try to learn from it. Atleast how i'd like to think of it.

I am not perfect though, but i will try to be better. But its the idea to struggle that i like, struggling to do better, to be good etc. Not that i like thinking arrogant thoughts, but just to sorta try to do better in general.  :rarity:

Hmm, sounds like it could be an actual physical problem, there are certain sensitivities that can produce that sort of result.  Have you considered perhaps reading or studying or watching various teachings of the faith, if it's the noise that is the problem?  The razzle and dazzle of some of the more modern churches is something I admit to finding disturbing, like some folks seem to think they need to somehow highlight the faith in ways that aren't necessary.

What i like about this faith is no matter how many times we fall down in sin, we can be forgiven and learn from those mistakes. Like i have problems when it comes to lust. And i know some people probably have stuff in their life that they struggle with, which is just a part of being human. Overcoming selfish inner thoughts involves bringing them 'into submission to Christ' which is both much simpler and much harder then it sounds.  The most dangerous of 'sins' is pride, because it's the one that is least likely to see that your at fault, wisdom and humility walk hand in hand, if pride has you then delusion and arrogance will also get you in it's grip and your going to have to encounter a very hard fall to realize your problem.

If you want to truly deal with the problem, however, your going to not simply need to pray about it, regret it and pray for forgiveness.. this is a good thing and thankfully God meets us where we are, and does forgive, and encourages us to keep going..  He will continue to encourage us and help us, and meet us where we are.  Repenting however, involves a 180 turn.. it  involves coming to God and saying 'I don't want my way in this, I want yours, not in thought, not in will, not in heart, not in deed,  I don't want my will in this in any way, but yours." And meaning it from the heart of your being.

Why do I say this?.. because every time in my own life where I've gone to the Divine just seeking forgiveness, the problem isn't fully dealt with and I kept having to encounter it again.. but those moments I've come to God in desperation, usually a tired desperation as I, I don't know how deal with this anymore, and said simply meaning it entirely 'Not my will, but yours, I reject everything to do with this but what You want of me in it.." I have walked away from that particular sin and as I remained focused on the Divine, never wanted anything to do with it again.  This is a lot harder however, then it sounds, which is why it's a good thing God meets us where we are.. seeing where we can be..  and encouraging us every step of the way on the journey of life.

Also, the problem with the word sin is it's come mean 'bad' culturally, and no one sees themselves as bad, I generally go with the term 'selfish' because all of us are selfish at times and it makes it much clearer as to what God means by sin.  Though there is more too it then that, if you really want to discuss it, I'd rather discuss that personally in a PM.

hi everybody, Im a Christian to. im new hear so hi!

Welcome, both to the website and to those of us who are believers within the community, may you be blessed in life.

Actually, let me end my words here with a general desire for blessing in the lives of everyone who reads this, and the statement, feel free to send me a private message if you want to discuss anything I've written, here or elsewhere.

I get it. I'm a natural introvert so I prefer solitude or small groups. Not the same thing but I can sympathize.

Ah.. Jonny Music, 90% of what we are told in life is lies, I'm not sure I'd count even this as the biggest one.. It's pretty up there, but I can think of one or two other lies that are just as bad....  The problem is that no one in this area is willing to let it be tested, they fight it every step of the way.. so strongly in fact, that it reminds me of the very folks they claim are fanatically against them because of their 'faith'.  Meanwhile, I believe that faith and reason can go hand in hand, that science and religion don't have to be antagonists.. though I've had folks attack me for this stance.

you don't need to go to church to be a Christian. the bible says you are the temple of the holy ghost.

You are correct, and in essence, one doesn't need to go to church in order to believe and follow the teachings of Jesus, and yet we are instructed not to forsake the fellowship either, and that 'as iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend.'  Now, I hold that a broader meaning then it's generally seen as, since most folks see this as an instruction to go to church, but taken literally, it's an instruction to fellowship with other believers.. which what we are doing right now, in this thread can be seen as.

That said, I continue to try and find a church that truly follows what is taught.. *Sigh* and find most of them following a specific leader, forgetting that Jesus is supposed to be the head of the church.. or following false teachings, forgetting that the Spirit is supposed to be our teacher... or clinging to some pet teaching of man.. rather then seeking the Spirit's guidance...putting together their own view of God from their understanding, not realizing that doing this is creating an idol in your own mind, which is against the second commandment.. and that's only the surface problems.

The further problem, from what I have learned from the word, is that we are supposed to be a community of believers, and is what God wants of us.. but the assembly of believers doesn't have to be a certain time or hour, and it doesn't have to follow a certain ritual.. aka what most churches do 'Worship' 'Tithe' 'Preacher Speaks'  'Altar call'  -  Not to say that a formula can't be followed, and there isn't a certain order that God desires from his people, but this doesn't have to be it.  Simply gathering together as a group and praying together, or just getting together to talk and spend some time together, or to study the bible, though again, I've come to understand that often folks get together to talk about their ideas, rather then to seek what the Spirit of God means in a particular section of scripture, I've done this in the past myself..

There was a time when I was more willing to go with the general flow of various services, and trying to find a way to serve within what I found to be a problem, to find the group who as the least out of the Divine will, but these days continue, I'm increasingly unsatisfied with anything but what God is saying and doing...

family counts as other believers so if youn have family you got no need to go to church B)

That's what the commentator was trying to say. That Evolution is NOT scientific fact, but is merely a religion on its own (he's specifically stated it).

I also know that evolution can no way at all be a scientific fact. I entirely believe in the creationist point-of-view (because we all know in the book of Genesis in the Bible that the Earth, everything in it and even the solar system (referring to the sun and the Earth's moon) was created in six days while God then rested on the holy seventh-day Sabbath (modern-day Saturday)).

i believe evolution is total crap. but im not as sure about the six day theory as before. i believe that the BIBLE is perfect, don't get me wrong but there are some interesting theorys out there about a old earth being compatible with the bible. after my dads done with it im thinkin of reading this book called gods of the new millennium. its a look at the old earth theory and aliens supported by ancient mythology, history and archaeology.

Dang man, that's it in a nutshell.  Really great word there.  As long as Jesus is the crux of your faith and you follow him, you can't go wrong.

The real question about young earth creationism vs. old earth creationism vs. the ancient earth evolutionary argument, is what is truth?  Who is telling the lies and who is speaking truthfully, and how does one tell?  I'm afraid I'm going to have to go 'Let God be true' though every man is a liar.  Don't trust what others tell you.. seek the Truth.  What aligns with the nature and character of God, what can be trusted and what does not.. can not be.

Zane, thank you, first wisdom comes from above, and secondly, I have to disagree, at least slightly.. you can still go wrong, if you don't remain humble and teachable.. it is perilous to assume you can't go wrong, or that you have all of the answers, that is the path to pride and delusion.. you must keep your eyes on Him, and seek to get as close to Him as possible, and to be prepared and willing to allow him to correct you.  That said, I'm going to assume that's what you really meant.

It doesn't really matter if Evolution is a fact or not. Remember that the creation story has been seen as an allegorical truth since Middle Ages. You don't have to accept it as literal truth, even so there are facts that disproves Exoddus, Joshua's conquering etc as fiction. But what we do know is that Jesus was very real, even if he wasn't that still wouldn't matter, what would matter is if somebody disproved crucifixion as made up, then that would be crucical to Christianity. But most historians at first century notes down Crucifixion and even those early Christians who had other views even they believed in Crucifixion at the time. Like in "Gospel of Thomas" which may be the oldest (I am unsure) even says "Take my cross and follow me".

But what i mean is Jesus himself appeared before Paul of Tarsus, to think that Paul is stronger than God and to spread false beliefs is not something that convinces me, and the fact that he risked much of spreading this faith. So to say he was a liar while putting his life as he describes it would be unlikely. Considering there is so much a liar does before he/she gives up.

The point is the main message of salvation and belief was spread to the gentiles. And its one of the reason i believe it purely out of that, its basically a religion where evidence is thrown out just due to the fact that there is so much you can dig before you just simply have to believe.

Although i have no problem at all accepting evolution if its based on facts. Its not like it contradicts my beliefs. Even stuff that people have found to not be historically accurate in terms of the old testament, it doesn't matter because Jesus can use theology, but it doesn't have to be historically true. So i doesn't make the religion false due to that.

Atleast how i see it :twi:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c1ufK04tjOI

That video makes a tremendous amount of logical fallacies and bad arguments

1) evolution is abiogenesis and evolution essentialy is the adding of information is a straw man

evolution makes no claim on the origin of life that is the study of abiogensis.

2) Not finding missing links, this is completely bs. The amount of missing links  There are in fact so many transitional forms that it is difficult to determine what exactly each transitional form is.

https://youtu.be/Ohd5uqzlwsU?t=31m17s

3) Carbon-14 being found in fossil fuels and diamonds.  Of course you will find carbon 14 in fossil fuels and old stuff.  Half lifes are half lifes for a reason.  its about 5.8 thousand years for carbon.  But just because it has a small half life doesn't mean you wont find it in diamonds.  Due to the inaccuracy of C-14 past a certain age many different types of radiometric dating are used.  Potassium-40 at 1.25 billion years, or uranium-235 at 725 million years.  Independent use of many dating methods shows consistency in their usage and assumptions made.

4) Dinosaurs did not live with humans.  No dinosaur fossils are found with human fossils or human relics. And modern day reports by people have never been corroborated with evidence.  And just because someone said they saw a dinosaur does not mean they did.  There is a reason human testimony is often the least reliable part of investigations

5) 2nd law of thermodynamics.  He left out the convenient part of the law.  Entropy increases in a Closed System.  There is the huge ball of gas in the sky we like to call the sun constantly adding heat to the open system that is the earth.

6) His last few points on some scientific things disproving evolution are also horrible.  Specified and irreducuible compleixity were ideas of intelligent design proved nonsensical by Kittzmiller vs Dover trial.  If you want to see a nice discussion of that go watch my youtube video about keneth miller and he does a great job destroying that.

I could go on.  I also sort of lost any hope in this entire video when he attempts to prove that satanists want a one world government and reigion.  The video has many holes in it.
