I love Derpy. Honestly, at first this episode made me weary of her new status in the show. I was uncomfortable with her talking. But I think that was mostly because it caught me off-guard. Now I watch that scene over and over again. XD

 

As for her outshining AJ, no. The episode was still about AJ and her personal character development. But what I really enjoyed about this episode was the presence of the mane 6 and each role they played. I tend to enjoy episodes that involve all of them much more than episodes that only have a few of them. After the Derpy scene, I simply paid attention to what was going on in the episode. I didn't keep having heart attacks about Derpy being able to speak.

I've never really been googoo over Derpy at all, so her having a new speaking role didn't really do much for me honestly. I just hope they don't start overplaying her now. That said I can't say she really outshined Applejack at all, at least I wouldn't say so.

 

The whole traditional dimwit character thing is just a bit overplayed to me now.
