The Brony Documentary Discussion

Just wondering. What would you classify yourself as, everyone? Hipster? Moderate? Creative? I'm definitely a moderate. My interest was piqued by others on the internet (BO emblems, other forums with MLP threads, etc), it just took me a while to bite (in fact, my first episode I ever saw was "Too Many Pinkie Pies").

What about you guys?

Definitely Moderate. I could care less what other people think about something, if it's underground or mainstream, so I know I'm not a hipster. And I haven't made any artwork. so I'm not a creative. I became a brony because of 3DS Forums, where this site got its start.

I think I'm partially all three.

I'm creative, and I really enjoy the fan content, though, I haven't actually really made anything because I haven't been able to properly build a LEGO pony.

And just as described as the moderates in the song, I was just minding my business on my favourite forum when suddenly people came in with ponies, and I was curious.

I guess I'm also a bit of a hipster. I enjoy liking things that are less mainstream, an the irony of liking the show amuses me.

I liked the song clip, I'm excited to see the actual thing.

But I probably won't be able to unless it gets on Netflix.

FOR THE LOVE OF CELESTIA, PLEASE DON'T UPLOAD IT TO YOUTUBE!

Or else it's not going to happen. :(

If you pirate this film, you're just ruing it for everyone else.

I would classify myself as a moderate.  I was introduced to it through a Final Fantasy forum, but didn't actually watch the show until about a year later.  I'd like to become a creative brony (particularly on the musical side) but so far, I've been too lazy.

I enjoyed it. I thought it was well put together and the animation segments were quite enjoyable. Watching this made me want to go to Bronycon, but of course I don't have the funds for such a thing. I liked seeing the different bronies and their journey's to the con's, and their stories. I couldn't help but smile throughout the entire documentary.

As far as my classification, I would probably say between moderate and creative. I have a few sketches I did and I'm working on more, but I just naturally came across MLP from the term brony through the internet. Naturally, I was curious of what this was.

So yeah, hopefully this gets to Sundance and other film festivals , and that it can get to Netflix and iTunes.

Like, don't underestimate my power man.

I saw the film I enjoyed it I got jealous even though I've been to a smaller brony convention. I would classify myself between moderate and hipster. I found the show through review videos on Youtube and I do like standing out at school by wearing pony t shirts.

I forgot to mention, I am so not a creative one. I can't draw to save my life. I tried to draw a picture of Pinkie Pie one time and it turned out horrible.

I showed the documentary to my mom today. Before seeing it, she thought bronies were strange and couldn't see why anyone would watch the show. Now, she think bronies are actually quite respectable and is actually willing to give the show a chance. I thought this would open her mind a bit more, but it surprised me how much my mom enjoyed watching it. She was even explaining to my uncle why we bronies are actually likable when he made a joke. I'm so glad I bought this documentary.

I was trying really hard to keep it together at the end - really, really hard - but when Lauren Faust got up at the panel I just lost it. Tears came streamin' down.

It's a really solid production. I was initially put off a little by how much focus was placed on the socially awkward fans (it's a little hard to watch at times), but ultimately the message was a wholly positive one - how this show has changed lives and brought people together. After I realized that, the focus on certain people hardly bothered me. I felt like this realization really came full-circle towards the end of the film.

I got home today and burnt a DVD copy so I can lend it out to people whenever they're curious. It's a damn fine explanation, and overall, I'm really impressed.

Haven't seen it yet, but I really hope to watch it.

Speaking of the fandom, its been a huge help to me over the few months I've been apart of it. I dealt with a bout of depression a while ago (T the point where I nearly killed myself), but actually started to get over my depression and suicidal thoughts since I've started talking with other bronies and started watching the show. Bouts with depression were pretty common with me, but they've stopped since I started watching. I love the show and the fandom. I also have a fine motor deficiency which makes it impossible for me to write properly(I write very slowly, and have trouble keeping my hands steady. They can shake a little bit when I write or draw, and I write very slowly), but I've started to improve a bit since I've started dabbling in pony art. The art style is much more friendly to the albeit minor disability that I have.it helps me with my paranoia and anxiety, too(I finally built up the courage to find help for my anxiety related insomnia), and that's finally getting better. All of this is because of the fandom and the show. And for all of that, I am truly grateful.

Point is, it sounds like the documentary really got the point of the fandom across.

Recently watched this today, I must say after watching it I'm really looking forward to the Ponycon coming up in Sydney ^.^ I just love the parts John De Lancie is singing and other parts where othher bronies told us some stories about their lives.

John De Lancie is pretty awesome. He played Q in a few of the Star Treks, too. Q was one of those characters you either loved or hated, haha. The character had a personality very similar to Discord, actually.

Heh, yeah.  I lost it during the credits when they played 'Proud to be a Brony'.  It was just too perfect and too relatable to my own experiences.

You know, before I became a brony, I never used to tear up or anything.  Now it's almost a biweekly occurrence.  What the hell guys?!  Stop being so awesome that it moves me to tears!!!  (joking, please continue the awesome)

I just watched it and I absolutely loved it. I can't see how they could have portrayed the community in a more true and good way as they did. The individual stories of some of the bronies were interesting and you could see clear impact on them becoming a brony and going to the conventions and whatnot.

I loved every minute especially near the end where Lauren Faust and some of the other cast were talking about how the show can have an impact on a person and how the bronies may be changing the way people think about gender stereotypes and being kind and caring.

Never mind about being a hipster I learned what it actually was and I didn't like it before it became known so I'm just a moderate.

I bought it, watched it and loved it :)

I teared up when Lauren Faust came out at one of the conventions and the crowd cheered her on even though she felt bad for leaving the show. It was such a great documentary. I really enjoyed seeing how some of the really popular bronies grew to their popularity. I also enjoyed seeing bronies from other countries. I was all riled up when I finished it this afternoon and I can't wait til I can make a convention.

Edit: Oh and I started out as a moderate brony but then I started writing some music with the fandom so now I'm a creative brony.

The most awesome part was seeing my name in the credits. Seeing Apple Bloom and Marco was cool too, I reckon.

My expectations for this documentary weren't much different from the reality. Obviously bronies aren't the main target audience as that would be preaching to the choir, but I found it quite entertaining. It also gave me a firsthand look at things from the perspective of some of the renown artists, musicians, etc. in our community — a viewpoint that was new to me. Unfortunately that frustrated me a bit because I myself can't do anything. The interviews with Lauren, Tara, and John don't really contain anything we haven't heard before, but those outside the fandom probably have yet to hear any of it. Bronies and show staff interviewed echo the most common sentiments held by the majority of bronies abroad, that they're simply tired of the relentless negativity and cynicism that's pervaded almost everything, and My Little Pony is giving them an alternative of sensitivity and sincerity. All of this starkly contrasts the coverage we got from FOX news, a sample of which was played close to the beginning of the documentary. Maybe there's a chance of reversing some negative opinions in addition to swaying some people who have no idea what to make of this. I can only hope.

Two fathers who are nearly opposites may strike a chord with the parents most hostile to their kids' involvement. One father supported his son and heard him out; the other, who was described as highly “conservative,” just thought it was weird. Both took their sons to BronyCon where John arranged for the two of them to meet and talk about it. By the time it was all over, the previously resistant father had become accepting. During the credits it was said he eventually watched and enjoyed an episode with his son. I hope more than anything that once this hits TV it'll allow some of the kids and teens who have been hiding this from their parents finally to be open about it. Hardship at school and work can be endured because there's always the possibility of changing jobs and school eventually comes to an end, but families are for life and should be a haven, especially for children. "Closet bronies" might find this a useful tool for building that haven.

The most relatable elements for me were two young men who came from similar but more severe situations than I did. One is named Daniel, a guy with Asperger's Syndrome. I'm not afflicted with that, but the insecurities and inabilities endemic to him were instilled in me by experiences resembling those of Alex, a bright guy who wasn't satisfied with the hick environment he's always had to endure and the abuse that came with wanting something different. They were good choices to follow around. I think they may be a bit inspirational to others, especially Daniel; his con experience and mine were pretty close.

I agree with those that think Dr. Redden's 9/11 comment is off-base and possibly counterproductive.

John's ditty was broken into segments which served as delimiters as the documentary shifted its focus. Cleverly and efficiently done, I think. The song itself was witty too. After the mention of clopping I paused it and did double facepalm in a purely reflex reaction. I was compelled to make this once I finished watching:

Once it becomes available to the masses on DVD, let's stream it on a Friday. I'd love to hear some live commentary from the strangers that usually filter in after the movies are done.

I haven't seen it yet, but now I really want to. The problem I'm having is whether or not to show my parents the documentary. They've been pretty against it from day one, so is it good for explaining the fandom?

I would say that it wouldn't hurt to show them the documentary.  It does a very good job of highlighting the positive side of the fandom as well as the positive effects that is has had on many of its members.  It even has a short segment about a boy's father who initially disapproved of the fandom, but came to accept it.  While it isn't a foolproof solution, again, I don't think that it could hurt.

Photo Finish,that's her name.

Makin' every-pony pretty is her number one game.

She do what she do, to make you more than you.

No-pony gonna care if what we share is true.

Cause lies are beautiful, the truth is not.

Come on little mare, you better shake that plot.

You know that's what they really all came to see.

So far I have heard a lot of people loving it and I hope I will do too because I have not watched it yet. Though I have seen the little animation, haha. I bought it yesterday :)

But I have a challange. I am going to make Swedish subtitles for it so I can show some renatives :) (some of them aren't very good at english) But that'll take forever..

I gave it a watch last night. Really, really, really well done documentary. It is waaaay better than any of the other brony documentaries that have been released and is, unlike the vast majority of them, actually watchable.

Just editing my signature to say that my behavior on here was cringe. I don't regret the friends i made but man i was cringe here

The animation was done by the same person who made the Picture Perfect Pony music video.

I quite enjoyed the animation, and especially thought it was cool to have John de Lancie and Tara Strong voice act for it.

Am I the only one who found it funny that the documentary has a hand full of claims that bronies aren't homosexuals, yet periodically the transgendered founder of Bronycon comes on screen to have a few words! I just found that really ironic.

I think it was mostly just the one kid from the boonies that did that, I don't remember hearing more then a couple time in the beginning.
