Are you put off by the art?

Yeah I really don't care for the art style to be totally honest, it just feels so weird. Especially with their skin being colored so strange and bright, and having wings. as humans. Its just strange.

That said I'll still give it a chance, hopefully the stories redeeming or something.

Its not a beautiful art style, nothing like MLP, but ya know if I can watch MLP, maybe I can try this atleast.

If it sucks I'll just not watch it, simple as that :P.

The artwork should be the least of your worries.

I don't want to live on this planet anymore. Lyra does. I don't.  That "dog" looks demented. DEMON DOG!!!!!!!!!!!! I am not amused.Like Ian from Smosh and barber shop poles or Silly Bands.

  • 3 weeks later...

I just wish the concept art would at least be like this:

They have natural skin colors, no wings, no tails, no pony ears etc

I'm willing to give this spin off a chance, just like I did with MLP FIM

That's actually pretty good. If it was like this I'd give it half a chance.

Things just got 20% cooler.

It does remind me of Monster High. But strangely enough, I actually like the art. I can see how most people are put off by it, but I don't mind it at all, really.

While I do think most of the mane 6 do look slightly off and I can find a bazillion other humanized/anthromorphed fanmade ponies that look way better what matters most to me is is the show is its actual plot. What little has been revealed so far seems unbelievably cliched, but I will still give it a chance and if it sucks then at least it is only a spinoff and not the main show.

No, i couldn't care less by the art of a series.

The plot, the plot is what is important to me, so, it may have the most beautiful designs, but if it is lack of plot, i will not bother on check it out.

Well I thought it was pretty cool... Till I saw the art. They're horrendous! Ponies are far prettier than those weirdos... And Dashie and Twily just look really weird with bright blue and violet skin.

It'd be waaaaay better if the art was by John Joseco! I love his drawings! If you don't know him check him out of deviant art!

I was just aware of this today and decided to Google it.

I'm more taken aback on how all their outfits are similar. Skirts with shirts/tanks/whatever and high boots. I mean, there was so much opportunity to change things up a bit and maybe have given Rainbow Dash work-out shorts, or Applejack some jeans.

I also am weirded out with their skin colour too. Hasbro had so much opportunity to make things really adorable, and in the end they just seem too creepy. I'll give it a shot, but I'm not so convinced right now.

I have seen the shows take on the humanized mane 6. I have to say they went in the wrong direction with this one. I looked and the art reminds me of Monster High(as far as the characters humanized versions) and another cartoon show called Winkz Club (i think) With that being said Are you reluctant to watch the show due to the artwork?

Actually, it looks more like Mane Six in Uncanny Valley. They look creepy as heck. I'm not even sure if its going to do well than the original. I have my doubts, but I'm pretty sure it will be canceled on the first season.

Hey, who said I can't have an opinion?

The charakters look so strange ... it looks just wrong!

I've never been a fan of anthro-ponies but those are really weird!

But wath bothers me the most is thet they want to make something highschool-teeny like out of it thats just terrible!

I'm not thrown off by the art at all!

I love how they drew them. The style is like that of an anime, and I think it's so cute! I also love the style because it looks exactly how I would imagine the ponies as humans (except for Dashie having a ponytail...for some reason that bothers me XP).

But it didn't really make me think less of the show...if anything, it's actually making me more excited for it! But the art doesn't matter anyways...I'm sure the show will be just as epic either way! But I love the anime-chibi-style of it. I dunno why people hate the art...but opinions are opinions. I'm not gonna let the art throw me off anyways. :P

Very much so, but it's nothing I can't live with if the show has a solid plot and decent voice acting. Sadly, the art style and character designs are going to be the only factors in whether or not some people even give it a chance, so I think they really need to reconsider what they've done. Make them humans or don't; the weird hybrid thing they have going on is ridiculous. It looks like they don't know what they're trying to do with this show, which I'll admit is a possibility.

Considering the low amount of information and (to my knowledge, correct me if I'm wrong) the complete lack of any more official art, I'd guess they're feeling out the reactions.

Yes. I won't give a chance to it because it's not original in any way. (remind me why we are obliged to write 100 characters every time even if we don't have anything else to say)

I dunno about you guys, but this art style might look really neat when It's in motion. Is just wait till we see some actual clips of it.

Yes. Yes I am. I find the art absolutely atrocious and dislike the fact that they have cutie marks on their faces. What is that? And why is their skin the same color as their pony coats? It's weird, and freaky. But most bothersome - why the heck do they not have horns? They have the wings, and it's like... it is inconsistent. They probably thought the horns would look bad. And I'm like... really? Out of all of the things you had (weird skin colors, wings, cutie marks on faces), you take issue with that? It's both amusing and ridiculous.

I'll probably give it a shot anyway as I hated MLP's art at first too, but... I get the feeling I won't be warming up to that art style anytime soon.

I totally agree with Ary here. I mean just look at them. They look absolutely ridiculous. Not only because they just do, I'm not a big fan of humanized things in general.

I'm not very amused by Hasbro's decision to make "Equestria Girls" at all.

Yes. The character designs, both concepts, are absolutely horrid. Each character has no individuality in them besides a minute change in the hair and a switch in the color palette. Their hands, face, clothing, body, and legs are completely identical with each other.

You can block out the designs into silhouettes; you won't be able to recognize who the characters are. If you can't really differentiate and individualize them as characters, then the character designs become nothing more than carbon copies with small details slapped onto them. That's lazy character design with the mere excuse to sell toys, and Hasbro doesn't give a damn about quality as long as the bottom line shoots up like the stock market. Quality can cost more, but they're a hell of a lot more refreshing to the buyers.

And anyone who handwaves it all and says, "Wait and see" is acting extremely naïve. High-quality character design is CRUCIAL to getting people sucked in. It's a hook that sends a message to your audience that you care about the overall product. The pony character designs are masterfully drawn, and you can easily tell who they are regardless of angles. If the character designs were horrible, I guarantee you, we may not see an audience as big as it is. Bad character design, on the other hand, is a major strike, because it implies lack of a damn about the overall product with the desire to only appeal to the lowest common denominator. "Good" has no demographic, and there's no excuse for crappy quality on the professional level. I don't tolerate crap, and the character designs for Equestria Girls are intellectually insulting!

You're half right, half wrong.

As far as them all being pallet swapped and wig swapped... Um, that's what they currently are as ponies. Any character that has different face and body are minor characters with recurring speaking roles, such as Snips and Snails, Cakes, Flim and Flam, so on. But this was done, in my opinion, so there was no chance of a pony being 'prettier' than other so anyone can connect equally to any pony. The only thing that matters, as it should be, is their personality.

Anyway, you're correct that the designs are bad, and crappy. I have hope that this is not the final designs, as there are at least two versions, one with 'pony tail' hair and one with out. I hope they change other things.

I'm still reserving judgment to see if the writers give a damn.(not saying that the artists don't, maybe hasbro producers had a very heavy hand there.) And that does not make me 'naive' anymore than someone looking at FiM and thinking all they do is stereotypical girly things(a unfair view of society, not mine. I don't think thing should be 'girl things' and 'boy things') and dismissing the possibility of these big eyed saccharine characters going on a quest to rid their town of a large dangerous dragon.

The art style and character concepts do matter, it is a visual medium and so far we are given no visual clue as to who these characters are. AJ is a hard working farm girl yet she's wearing a skirt. I don't think they did a good job at all in character designs.

My opinions on the art style is that it looks strange. 'Uncanny Valley' indeed, it definitely need shaping up to iron out some of the weirdness going on.

The art is definitely off-putting, but that's only one reason to watch Mlp, despite it being one of the best things about the show. The new art would take getting used to if the show ends up being any good.

Now the real question is, will it be comparable to FiM?
