Well, I've come to notice my different views on Alicorns as the seasons progress. Not only by their anatomy, but what is expected of them, and how most of them (exception of Twilight) came to be. Well, here's what I believe about Alicorns. Let's start with the cannon ones...

(I do not own any of this art, nor do I ever claim it. By: Celebi-Yoshi @ deviantART)

Let's start with their manes:

Well, I cannonize Luna's mane as a starry substance, but most importantly, still a lot like hair. As you can see, Nightmare Moon has a much different mane, and we'll leave the starry mist in that form. So... magical, soft hair that has little magical star-like twinkles that glow.

Celestia's on the other hand, like this picture, I cannonize as a silky, super soft hair that sort acts a very opaque colorful cloud. Sort of in the way of a substance spreading in water like smoke. I do not see it glowing in any way besides her sparkles as well. Again, hair...

Cadance obviously has nothing strange about hers, and just looks like normal hair.

Lifespans:

I believe Luna and Celestia obtained their ultimate magical features and assets over a course of their early adventures. Typically, when they were 'mortal'. I do not see them as gods, neither does Faust. (Yes, I still support Faust's intentions) They did not (cannon) create the sun and moon, because in Hearth's Warming Eve, Unicorns before them raised the sun and moon to help the Earth ponies and Pegasai.

What I mean is that basically, they are chosen ones with these etheral abilities to maintain their country for a long time. So, with that, I think Cadance is just a very minor ruler compared to them, and never was chosen in a way they were. I believe she was born into royalty, and had Alicorn blood in her. That's why Twilight was the first Alicorn to not be born as one. She may be bigger, but has a mortal pony life-span. I believe Twilight will to. Where would the series go without that fact? Oh, and Luna and Celestia were the first Alicorns made by a probable 'mutant' mixture between all 3 races. No dominant genes here. A perfect mixture. As seen by Hearth's Warming Eve, there were only normal Unicorns in the story raising the sun and moon. Again, Celestia and Luna obtained their 'immortality'. They were not born with it. So, Alicorns are not gods, just a mixture.

I personally think that the only Alicorns that are close to immortal if immortal or even have an expanded lifespan are Luna and Celestia, and I think its all in their manes.

I think the Alicorns with flowing manes(Such as Luna and Celestia) Are the long lifespanned or immortal type, but i think all the other regular mane alicorns all live a normal ponies life, and are just basically royalty.

I'm personally still formulating my own theories about Alicorns, but I do wonder about the process that one must go through to become one. Celestia and Luna seem to be special Alicorns, as you pointed out in your post, Kiwoy, but I'm not sure exactly how they came about. Perhaps they're a perfect mixture of the races as you said. I'm not sure.

But moving them out of the picture, Cadance actually becomes the most interesting of the Alicorns so far when it comes to origins, because we honestly don't know how she became a princess herself. We see that Twilight was granted Alicornhood by Celestia, although the means she used to do it I'm not sure of. What did Cadance do to become a princess?

*Takes a puff on pipe*

I'm not sure, but perhaps we'll get answers next season, or perhaps something that will better explain how one becomes an Alicorn.

I do believe that there are two Alicorn races, or it is possible that Celestia and Luna are simply avatars of formless gods, who took that form to better rule Equestria. Cadence is probably mortal, and so is Twilight.

Hmm... that's interesting... I never thought of it that way. But... wouldn't that mean that it is possible to have sub-species of Pegasai, Unicorns, and Earth Ponies as well?

I view Celestia and Luna as created beings, sort of magical golems created to raise the sun and moon so that hundreds (thousands?) of unicorns could be freed of that task. They created other alicorns for other purposes back in the day, but they are all gone now.

Cadance is the result of a failed genetic safeguard that keeps those with pegasus and unicorn heritage from manifesting both a horn and wings. So she's a mutant.

Twilight has managed to use the Elements of Harmony to temporarily assume the roles of one of the missing alicorns. And by "temporarily" I mean "for the entirety of her lifespan".

Celestia became a Princess after the Nightmare Moon incident by virtue of declaring herself one. Luna is a Princess by virtue of being Celestia's sister. Cadance and Twilight are Princesses by virtue of Celestia saying so. Prince Blueblood is a Prince by virtue of being the current heir to the (now defunct) unicorn kingdom once ruled by Princess Platinum.
