How much confidence should a person have?

I don't really have a firm grasp of the line between confidence and hubris. I am way too arrogant for my own good, constantly putting myself up, thinking too highly of myself, whatever. Although nobody around me really notices it or minds it, and it actually helps me inordinately in public speaking, presentations, anything that requires you radiate charisma, I am aware it is too much. I'm trying to slowly tone down my haughtiness, but its a tough slough.

So I guess I would say that it is very important to be confident/sure of yourself, and it is actually better to think a little too highly of yourself than a little too low of yourself. However, the key is to strike a balance, and at the very least, learn to fake being humble at the right times to avoid coming off as too conceited. Of course, genuine humility is obviously better.

In general it seems holding yourself up too high is better than putting yourself down too low. The first one has a lot of benefits (as all confidence does), and in such cases being egotistical can be written off as a personality quirk (no offense meant, just using the term).

I'm the opposite of you in many ways… I put myself down and write off my accomplishments.

Confidence? You can never have enough of it, really. That's what I believe.

But before you tell me, ah, but what of those who are full of it and have inflated heads? That's not confidence. To me, that is arrogance and there is a difference. Confidence is when you believe in yourself, when you truly love yourself, and you don't let things get you down. You believe you have the tools to see things through, aren't necessarily unprivy to everything that could go wrong. When you are, that becomes arrogance and you become unrealistic.

People have a difficult time telling the difference between confidence and arrogance. And I can honestly say that I am one of those persons. To me, they kind of seem like one in the same. As though any bit of confidence could be considered arrogance and humility and restraint should be exercised at all points in time. But really, it isn't merely just about confidence. You need to be balanced, and realistic. Basically: just know your weaknesses AND strengths. If you know both, then you've got a healthy amount of confidence.

The problem with confidence is you need to know yourself, and few actually do.

That said, walking into a situation with a positive attitude will usually suffice.  Try.  Learn.  Grow.
