Lol, thanks for the info. XD I usually just listen to dubstep, so that's about as far as my musical knowledge goes. But, thanks. I guess I kinda needed to know that. I feel rather stupid... No matter! You learn something new everyday. I guess this is what I learned today. XD

Also, shouldnt deathcore be an option as well? I listen to that just as much as metalcore. So both of those would be my favorite subgenres.

Yea you're right, it should be option on here.

Yes that's what I meant, phase not face. Besides, you're the only person I ever make fun off :3

Anyways, I re-voted on this poll. I'm also surprised at how many people on here like power metal (I honestly can not stand power metal).

So I'll list some genres and bands I like.

Thrash: Metallica, Megadeth, Machine Head (?)

Progressive: Dream Theater, Between the Buried and Me, Periphery

Metalcore: Avenged Sevenfold, Atreyu, Trivium, Killswitch Engage

Alternative/Nu: Slipknot, System of a Down

Groove: Pantera, Lamb of God

As if anyone even had to ask what MY favorite is.

I'm actually pleasantly surprised that A.) black metal is a minority and B.) power metal is not nearly as hated as Crispy's metal thread would indicate. lel. (Dammit all, Champ. I can't stop saying 'lel' because of you. lelelel.)

If I'm to rate my other favorite subgenres after thrash, it'd go a little something like:

thrash > NWOBHM > power > folk > symphonic > prog > everything else

Thrash: Metallica, Megadeth, Machine Head (?)

I don't listen to Machine Head but I heard something about them being groove.

Metalcore: Avenged Sevenfold, Atreyu, Trivium, Killswitch Engage

Metalcore bands that are in my music library:

Early BTBAM

Converge

Norma Jean

Shai Hulud

I'm not much of an expert on metalcore. BTW, have you given doom and sludge metal a chance?

I read that Machine Head are groove/thrash, so I just put them under thrash, whatever.

Isn't Mastodon sludge metal?...Cause I seem to like them quite a bit.

And no I haven't really listened to doom.

(Dammit all, Champ. I can't stop saying 'lel' because of you. lelelel.)

The only reason I started saying "lel" is because Kirino (or whatever his/her name is now, they change their username all the time) always says it and I started saying it sometimes.

Ya know some people claim that Pantera are metalcore, I can see why.

They're progressive/sludge. I was more referring to the more traditional stuff like Acid Bath and Eyehategod.

And no I haven't really listened to doom.

Have you at least listened to some of Black Sabbath's stuff?

Machine Head is groove-thrash. Especially a lot of groove on Burn My Eyes, ...The More Things Change, and Through the Ashes of Empires. Latest two albums have a lot more thrash.

Pantera was actually a HUGE influence on metalcore, they even have some metalcore-esque songs. (Go listen to Suicide Note Part II.)

And I didn't realize Black Sabbath was doom metal.

They pretty much set up the foundation for doom/sludge.

But Black Metal is incredible, and one of the most diverse and experimental subgenres in Metal. Why would you say such a thing? .-.

They're Sludge for people who can't handle trve Sludge.

You heard me.

And I didn't realize Black Sabbath was doom metal.

They're not, but they were the main inspirations for the early Doom Metal scene in the 80's.

Black Sabbath just like, you know, created Metal in general.

And stuff.

The power metal album I like is Keeper of the Seven Keys Pt1 and I hardly ever listen to it. It's the cheesy vocals and the overall "happy" feeling that turns me away from it.

IKR, black metal is one of the most diverse metal genres out there.

Hey now, not all Power Metal is like that. Although I do like the cheesy stuff as well. See the aforementioned Kamelot.

Who, by the way, I saw on their last tour with Roy Khan. He was the best live vocalists I have ever seen in ever. And I've seen Iron Maiden.

And I'm not sure if that Black Metal remark is sarcastic or sincere.

I just don't understand the appeal of what seems to be the dominant form of black metal - screechy vocals, clumsy guitar work, a distinct lack of guitar solos, extreme down-tuning, obsessively anti-Christian lyrics, and absolutely wretched recording quality.

Me, I'm a clean/raspy vocals, tight guitar work, plethora of solos, E-standard tuning, meaningful lyrics, and competent mixing kinda guy.

I do realize that perhaps not all black metal is like this, but I'm not nearly bold enough to go wading through a sea of crap to find the one black metal band that I can stomach. If that's what floats y'all's boats, I won't judge, but it's like the forefathers of black metal took everything I hate about (what I consider to be) bad metal and threw it all in a blender. :\

To be perfectly honest, I'm not a huge fan of Traditional Black Metal. Neither Venom, nor the later Scandinavian stuff aside from a few songs here and there appeal to me

But Black Metal has grown a lot since then, and has become so diverse and interesting, that it's probably one of my favorite sub-genres of Metal. Not to mention some of the amazing fusion Black Metal genres, and the big role it plays in the Post-Metal scene. There's a lot of amazing Black Metal, and most of it doesn't have anything to do with Satan.

Have you tried listening to First Wave stuff?

Full step down>E-Standard. LIKE OMFSM, my guitar sounds so cool when it's a full step down. :o

Well, I could say the same about power metal. Cheesy vocals, an overall "happy" sound, uplifting lyrics, fantasy based songs, etc.

I grew up listening to Slipknot, Disturbed and Korn so I guess it's Nu metal for me but I also love Rammstein, Stone Sour and other bands from across most sub genres of metal. Nu metal has probably influenced my taste in music most though.

No, but I'll admit this song isn't half bad. But the only reason I can say that with a straight face is because, instrumentally, it seems to be attached at the hip to thrash. Which makes it A-OK in my book, as I'm sure you're aware. ;)

Also, I'm cool with going down to D-standard tuning, but no lower. If one absolutely must play a song in a lower key, I'd recommend just using a capo on a 7-string, otherwise it sounds muddy as shit.

My only argument to that is that fantasy settings aren't nearly as unoriginal as people often claim them to be. Maybe they're a little cheesy in this day and age, but there are so many different stories that can be woven around that same general theme, which is why there are still so many prolific fantasy writers even today.

But IMO, once you've heard one band say "fuck Christians", you've heard 'em all. Hell, even Slayer needed to take a break from that shit every once in a while and attack other things like politics and racism.

Also, if you guys have any more black metal you think I might even remotely enjoy, keep the links coming. I'm open-minded enough to at least give a listen.

It's Celtic Frost, plenty of thrashers like Celtic Frost.

But drop C sounds really cool too :<

Eeyup. That's part of what makes Slayer so awesome to me. "I don't believe in what I'm singing, but I'm such a badass that I don't give a FUCK."

Either way, lyrical content is normally something that doesn't bother me that much, I just think "FUCK YOUR GOD!" is something that can get old pretty quickly. And to be fair, magic and dragon slaying can get pretty old too, but the power metal bands that really stand out (like Iced Earth and Rage) focus more on relatable shit like the evils of holy war, corrupt politicians, etc.

But if you have some more thrashy black metal songs with some deep lyrics, send 'em my way, bro.

- I can see Dawn digging that album, but it's actually one of my least favorites.  :P  It's a little sludgy for my tastes, but then again, I'm one to prefer Jon Schaffer's endless supply of tight triplets:

Hmm... not bad. It would be better if the vocals were a lot raspier though. I don't find it sludgy at all though, it's a lot more thrash than anything.
