I don't care what anyone says the first and second generation are by far the best and most memorable out of them all. 

I'm assuming you're talking about the show and movies. I personally thought they had the most successful designs and story. Although, for the games. Ruby version was my first handheld when I was growing up. It was my favourite game for Gameboy SP. You might disagree with me, but I loved generation 3 pokemon. I still thought generation 1 & 2 were bomb too. Don't get me wrong. ^ _ ^

the anime was great back then, but games, in my opinion, get better as they get newer

Oh yeah of course generation 3 was absolutely awesome. I consider the first 3 to be pretty much neck in neck in terms of fun, nostalgia and quality. But Pokemon Gold/Silver are my all time favorites, with Yellow following behind. Yellow was the first handheld video game I had played when I was younger and it was what started me to like the show back then and everything. So between Yellow and Silver I have a really hard time deciding.....
