Let's mess up the United States for a second, shall we?

 

Suppose you had the power to admit new states into the union, but could only do so by merging or splitting states that already exist. What would you do?

 

I would split Northern California off the rest of the state and I would make New York City its own state.

Subdivide North Dakota and South Dakota into NorthSouth Dakota and SouthNorth Dakota.

 

Turn the whole of Interstate 10 and the land around it into its own state. Any cities along it would become a part of the state of Interstate 10. By length, it would be the nation's longest state with a single highway, and effectively slice any state that it crossed into two.

 

Do the same thing for the first transcontinental railroad.

 

Divide California along the San Andreas Fault, and then again going north-south.

 

Subdivide Utah, Colorado, Arizona, and New Mexico such that there are now 42 states at the Four Corners.

 

Unite Alaska with Hawaii.

 

Turn Detroit into its own state.

 

Do the same thing that's been done with Interstate 10 with Interstate 5. However, any state that gets sliced this way can rejoin using tunnels and bridges. The land area created from them are considered part of that sliced state, so you would have areas in the nation where they are overlapped by two states.

 

Redraw the boundaries of at least two states such that there is a territorial dispute, but over uninhabited territory.

 

Do the same with a city that is close to the state border, but create a situation like Baarle-Nassau/Baarle-Hertog but with three states.

 

With the aforementioned proposal, adopt the front door policy that Baarle Nassau/Hertog uses, but have the borders for all three states converge into one of the city's public bathrooms, thereby making the toilet be owned by three cities simultaneously.

The stacks of them were taller than me, not each individual tower.

 

Though one time I had to move some computer named "SHODAN"... now that one was a hulking beast. Plus, it kept calling me a "wretched bag of flesh" and an "insect". I was so glad when we finally removed the CPU out of that disrespectful machine.

I guess it's a good thing I went for an AMD processor for my computer build just because it's cost-effective and I can better understand what the hell I'd be getting.
