music Transformers Prime soundtrack release - Hasbro Studios

It appears a soundtrack CD is coming out for Transformers Prime, another property owned by Hasbro Studios:

http://www.amazon.co.../dp/B0072LRGDE/

This series began airing on The Hub a month after MLP:FiM started and features a real, live orchestra (which FiM lacks; it is orchestrated via a music sample library). Music is by Brian Tyler* and Matthew Margeson†.

Hopefully a soundtrack CD for Friendship is Magic isn't too far off in the pipeline... only a matter of time.

* Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Need for Speed: The Run, The Expendables, Battle: Los Angeles, Rambo (2008), The Final Destination

† Skyline

Now available for pre-order at Screen Archives:

I sent an e-mail to Lakeshore Records (the company manufacturing the Transformers Prime CD) just a few moments ago:

Hello Lakeshore,

I took notice of your upcoming soundtrack CD release for Transformers: Prime - a TV series that airs on The HUB network and is controlled by Hasbro Studios.

I was wondering if you have any plans to release a soundtrack album - hopefully a 2CD set - for another HUB/Hasbro Studios TV series, "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic"?

That TV series has a large fanbase of adult males in the age range of 15-40, known as "bronies", and we are very interested at the prospect of a soundtrack CD being produced for the show and made available to purchase.

I started a soundtrack CD petition for this about a year ago, and as of this writing it has over 5500 signatures:

http://www.petitiononline.com/petitions/p1nk13pi/signatures

As well, the main Facebook page representing the series has over 100,000 "likes":

https://www.facebook.com/pages/My-Little-Pony-Friendship-is-Magic/162412160442724

The music in the series is composed by William Anderson (score) and Daniel Ingram (songs). Neither of them use a live orchestra on the series (rather, digital sound templates that replicate the sound of an orchestra), so chances are the American Federation of Musicians may not be involved.

On behalf of all of the bronies, I hope you are willing to consider looking into MLP:FiM. If you do, feel free to contact me if you need assistance; I have a wealth of information about the show, its music, and the composers.

I think this is because Hasbro beleves Transformers is profitable enough with the demograpic who normally buys this sort of thing (music-loving teens/adults). Afteral, Hasbro is fully aware of its adult fanbase and caters to them regularly.

Plus, as stated, this could also be a test, as soundtracks of just background music from kids shows almost NEVER see the light of day. For MLP, we'll most likely see a music CD of just songs from the TV show before anything. We'll be extremely lucky if we ever see a CD of just the BGM at all! To this day a large number of fans of the English dub of Sailor Moon still cry out for a compilation of BGM from the dub, which is something we've been doing for over a decade, and it still hasn't happened. So I'm honestly not getting my hopes up.

However, the times are different, what Hasbro could do is that they could do a special release of the soundtrack on iTunes. As the main reason why companies don't put out soundtracks for kid's Tv shows is because by the time they print all those CDs (which costs money), theres a very high risk they wont get that money in return when they try to sell them. By selling digtally though iTunes, they don't have that risk. Just a thought...

I know this is late, mostly because I didn't notice someone had responded, but I'm really not a fan of iTunes. I don't purchase digital downloads and iTunes needs to upgrade their services to offer lossless quality music (ie FLAC or APE) instead of *just* mp3s before I will even think about ever purchasing from them. I also love having an actual physical product I can hold in my hands - with an actual disc (or two of them) and a nice, thick-printed booklet full of artwork and liner notes.

Yes, it might be more costly to press CDs, but with that I get a *quality* product instead of an inferior mp3 download that might have been done as a half-assed effort.

There are two major record labels in California - Intrada and La-La Land - who specialize in releasing soundtracks for older movies and TV shows, often in limited quantities due to AFM restrictions and lack of general interest. They do it anyway half as a means of making money, half as a labor of love to preserving film and TV scores for the masses to enjoy... soundtrack releases for things such as Die Hard and Batman: The Animated Series have materialized thanks to their efforts.

Most of these older soundtrack releases wouldn't have been made possible without the AFM's co-operation, and they charge a hefty fee to pay their musicians a second time as a result of releasing a soundtrack CD.

Back on topic... releasing a soundtrack CD for MLP:FiM would not be anywhere nearly as costly because the AFM is not involved whatsoever. Neither Daniel Ingram nor Will Anderson contracted an actual, live orchestra for the series - it's all digital samples and music created using orchestral libraries / ProTools / Cubase / etc. Transformers Prime, however, DOES utilize an actual orchestra contrated under the AFM. Why that is getting a CD release and not MLP:FiM right now is somewhat lost on me, but I'm guessing it's mostly because no one is aware of the brony community as of yet.

There IS a market for an MLP:FiM soundtrack CD, as this indicates, with more than 5500 signatures. It's only a matter of getting someone to look into it and release it now.
