Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland (1989) I had never seen this movie until now and I was surprised by some of the impressive names connected with its production. Watching this movie you can see where these talents are working their magic, and because of their contributions this movie almost scores. Sadly, it falls just a little short. The story is good, the direction has some nice creative touches, the characters are mostly good, and the animation is solid. But the first thing that has to be accomplished, before the first drawing is made, is the script. And this movie needs a script doctor very badly. The basic story is there, but it needs about 20 minutes of fat trimmed off, and some sprucing up of the remaining material. Some of the scenes were erratically edited and some characters needed to be rewritten and redesigned. That being said, the main characters were solid and enjoyable. It’s a good idea with some talent involved but not enough to put it all the way over. 5.5/10

Snow Day (2000) This is also the first time I’d seen this movie from start to finish and, in general, I liked it. Nickelodeon makes some decent movies and this is no exception. It has good characters and a fun premise. It isn’t perfect but perfectly suited to my mood at the time I watched it. 7/10

My Penguin Friend (2024) I really pleasant surprise, based on a true story about a man who is befriended by a penguin who migrated in the wrong direction and ended up in the man's front yard. The two brought something that they other needed to be happy, and the movie was strangely involving. At times it was very intense and sad, but well done. 7.5/10

Prompted by watching abridged movie reactions, so wanted to watch the whole thing.....

2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
An 'art movie' and not everyone's taste but I love the visuals. Kind of an after dinner, feet up, switch brain off and just absorb.

Solaris (Russia, 1972)
Not the American remake, which is OK (I've seen it), I just prefer the Russian original. Another long art movie, tho ironically (because I watched them back-to-back) Tarkovsky hated 2001 accusing it of being too much about technology and not enough emotion. Personally the difference is not that great to me, but maybe it's just me, but nevertheless I love them both.

I cannot wait to see Minus One, but I'm watching all the Goji films in order so it'll be a while before I get to it. Recently though, the last film I watched was the first John Wick movie since I've never seen any of them, I figured it was about time

Red One (2024) I was more pleased with this movie than I expected, but considering how low my expectations were, that’s not necessarily a great thing. To be fair, I liked a lot of things about this movie; Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans were good and I liked their characters. The inclusion of Gryla and her sons was a nice touch considering how rare it is to see them represented outside Iceland and its environs. Kiernan Shipka was so much fun in the role even though Gryla is traditionally a hag, but I guess we ultimately see that aspect of the character as well. The movie was mostly fun, although it needed an editor capable of streamlining and trimming the fat. And please, I beg of you, no more daddy issues and speeches! I can’t take it anymore!! But aside from those drawbacks and the utterly idiotic (and oft repeated) referring of Santa’s reindeer as females, which had my hand hovering over the remote to turn the channel, it was a passable effort, though far from great. 6/10

K-19 The Widowmaker (2002) This was an interesting movie from a historical standpoint, following the maiden voyage of the titled sub and crew. Being historical, I can only marvel at the perfect storm of cut corners and stupidity that led to the fate of this boat, but I find it baffling that, after the Captain (Harrison Ford) nearly sabotages their mission at every turn, under the fierce criticism of his co-captain (Liam Neeson), that Neeson would inexplicably arrest the Political Officer and Captain 3rd rank for doing their duty of relieving the captain of his command. It’s frustrating to see so many ways this boat and crew could have used common sense to avert tragedy, but didn’t. 6.5/10

The Snowman (2017) I was looking for a movie with a snowy backdrop and the trailers for this movie looked good. But then, trailers always seem to look good no matter how bad the movie turns out. The cast looked good and I figured there must be a decent budget involved so I tried it. Not until the opening credits did I see Martin Scorsese’s name buried in the background, which is an instant red flag that screams ‘You’re about to waste two hours of your life and you won’t get ‘em back!’ Nonetheless I gave this movie a chance and realized I should have followed my original instincts. This movie sucked. It was a convoluted mess of overlapping plots that were murky at best, and a cast that was so strung out and disgusting that I almost wanted to cheer for the badguy, however gratuitously grizzly. The direction was flaccid, the editing tired and the script disjointed and confusing. The only good thing about it was the scenery. 2/10

The Bishop’s Wife (1947) I was so fed up with the barrage of terribly made modern movies that I decided to retreat into the reliable past and watch this lovely movie. It’s a well-known movie and yet I had never seen it until now, and I’m so glad I finally caught up with it. The movie is really charming, with Cary Grant showing what a real movie start is all about. Loretta Young and David Niven and the strong supporting cast were all quite good. Cary Grant plays an angel who comes to help a Bishop who is building a cathedral, but the help he gave wasn’t about the cathedral but the rest of the Bishop’s life that needed to be reorganized. Everything was effortlessly told with great flair and clarity, which is just what I was looking for. 8.5/10

Baryschikov’s Nutcracker (1977) I already watched this once this Christmas season and mentioned it here. But worth noting is that Prime Video seems to have gotten ahold of the original CBS version, which differs slightly from the DVD versions in that a few lines of original narration remain sprinkled sporadically through the show. The subsequent presentations on PBS and on DVD have properly excised narration except the minimal amount in the opening scene; a small difference but the authors of this masterpiece made a conscious decision to amend the original misstep. If you’re interested in one of the greatest works of art ever committed to film, I recommend the DVD version. 100/10

What a line-up! Interesting that Tarkovsjy hated 2001 considering Solaris is like a Russian clone of it. I rarely have the constitution for either of these movies, so I have to admire your stamina! Interesting stuff! B)

Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker

(The Original Uncut Version)

I like that movie, Terry Mcginnis put an end to Joker after he had been given multiple chances of rehabilitation, due to incompetence of law enforcement in Gotham, Joker kept escaping to cause more chaos in DCAU as well. If Terry did not do that, Joker would have killed Terry and his family and Dana. Terry was in a life or death situation above all else.
