Favorite Double Albums

So what's your favorite double album and why? For me it has to be Blonde On Blonde by Bob Dylan. In fact, I'm listening to it right now. It's the only double album in which I love every single song on it. I like the mono version more than the stereo version but either one works just fine.

I'll say it would probably have to be Daydream Nation by Sonic Youth. It's one of my favorite albums of 80's. It's so much better than that Def Leopard shit that was popular at that time.

picking a favorite feels hard. but i can, however, pick one of the best double albums i've ever heard: the 2 CD version of Backlash's Heliotrope. originally the album was one CD, the 2-CD version contains a bunch of remixes of their songs, which are very well done, just like the original album itself. it's probably the best synth-pop album ever created, and i wish i knew what they were up to nowadays.

I think the only double album that I've fully listened to is The Wall by Pink Floyd, I guess I can't really say it's my favorite double album, since it's the only double album I recall listening to, but it's probably on my top 10 list of favorite albums, so I'd say it counts.

Druqks by Aphex Twin is all hands down, the greatest out of all the 2-Disc albums out there. It really is one of the most unique sounding albums that Richard D. James has released. Though this one is not his greatest release it is definitely one hell of an album.

I'm gonna go the generic uninteresting route, and say this one:

Eeyup. The Beatles classic self titled album (commonly referred to as The White Album) is ironically, more of a collection of solo works, rather than songs by the whole group, although there are a good amount of full group songs. It also contains my favorite song of all time:

There are bad songs (such as the infamous Revolution 9, which is not a song at all), but the good ones FAR outweigh the bad.

Y'know, I've been on this site for almost ten years and I've never had a proper signature. Ain't that something?

Ah yes, the legendary white album. I actually love this album too. Definitely in my top 5 for best Beatles albums and best double albums. By the way, I actually love Revolution 9 even though its technically not a song. The whole idea behind it was to "paint a picture of a revolution using sound". People call it a sound collage. I think it works very well in that aspect. It's definitely interesting to listen to, especially with headphones on.

I don't dislike Revolution 9, per se, but I just don't quite understand it. I can certainly see why one would find it facisnating. But I always skip it when I listen to The White Album.

My favorite would have to be The Wall by Pink Floyd. It's just a perfectly crafted, mystifying album that takes multiple listens to fully understand. I tend to see something new in it almost every time I listen to it.

Oh I'm a HUGE a Pink Floyd fan and The Wall is definitely one of their best albums IMO. I think most if not all of Pink Floyd's music takes at least a few listens to understand but once you do it really pays off.

I probably should say, another one of my favorite double albums is Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence by Dream Theater. Why? The second disc is taken up by a 42-minute, 8-part, epic suite. I don't listen to it every day, but it's quite an experience. That and the first disc has "The Glass Prison" and "Misunderstood."

Oh yeah and... @Latino: I definitely agree.

Just like the guy above, my favorite double album is The Beatles.

It showed their improvement from Sgt. Pepper's and Magical Mystery Tour, and you could tell each Beatle was getting their own musical style. It has a wide variation of genres, going from a hard rock 'Back in the U.S.S.R.' to folk like 'Blackbird and 'Rocky Raccoon'

  • 3 weeks later...

I'm gonna sound like a complete idiot for asking this, but what is a double album?

Does this count as a double album? It's two different albums but they are two parts of one album basically.

A double album is just a 2-Disc album, disincluding all of those fancy deluxe editions of normal albums, so yeah it's basically a 2-in-1 album.

So basically like the Beatles' white album?

A double album is an album that was originally released on two discs. This applies mostly to records because records can't hold as much music as CD's. It can be a bit confusing because sometimes an album can't fit on one record but it can fit on one CD.

And yes, I would say your post counts.

The Incident by Porcupine Tree

I knew there was another PT fan out there somewhere-good to finally meet you!

The Wall by Pink Floyd has already been mentioned a bunch of times, I'm going for 'Delicate Sound Of Thunder', which is a live album by them-recorded in '88 during a 3 night jog at Madison Square Garden.

Saw them live in Bordeaux in '94-spectacular. RIP Richard Wright and, of course, Syd Barrett.

Mellon Collie.

Definitely one of the most ambitious records of the 90's.  1979 and Tonight, Tonight were ok, but I always like the more intricate, meandering songs like Galapagos and Through the Eyes of Ruby.

I have 3 double albums that I can't get enough of:

Tommy by The Who

The white album

Last but not least, the monster of '76: Frampton Comes Alive!

Chances are I'll be spinning one of those on the turntable when I get home.

I actually listened to Tommy earlier today. It's better than I remembered.

Right now I'm listening to Electric Ladyland by The Jimi Hendrix Experience. Another classic.
