I recommend the original Hunchback of Notre Dame by Victor Hugo and "The Calling of Cthulhu" by HP Lovecraft. Both authors ways of writing are simply amazing. Lovecraft's story provokes a lot of reflection on the reader's part, which is amazing in such a short piece.

I love classics. I've been exposed to several of them thanks to high school, and I plan to explore more of them independently throughout my life.

For example, I have read pieces of The Iliad and The Odyssey. I would also like to explore The Aeneid some day, as well as Ovid's Metamorphoses.

I will list classics that I can think of that I read and would recommend to others. If an asterisk is next to the name, I have only read part of it so far. If a double asterisk is next to the name, I am currently reading it. If a work may not be appropriate for all ages, I'll put a recommended minimum age for it. However, even if I don't put any recommended minimum age for it the work may still be inappropriate for children.

  • The Iliad* by Homer

  • The Odyssey* by Homer

  • The Divine Comedy** by Dante Alighieri (14+)

  • Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare

  • Julius Caesar by Shakespeare

  • Brave New World by Aldous Huxley (14+)

  • Lord of the Flies by William Golding (14+)

  • The Epic of Gilgamesh*

  • A Separate Peace by John Knowles (14+)

  • The Scarlet Pimpernel by Baroness Emma Orczy

  • The Time Machine by H.G. Wells

  • How to Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee (14+)

  • Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut (17+)

Classics that I can think of at the moment that I have not yet read but plan to are the following:

  • Cat's Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut (17+)

  • The Aeneid by Virgil

  • Metamorphoses by Ovid

  • La Vita Nuova by Dante Alighieri

  • Convivio by Dante Alighieri

  • The Eclogues by Virgil (14+)

  • The Georgics by Virgil

  • Candide by Voltaire (17+)

  • The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer (17+)

  • King Arthur (various authors, versions, etc -- I've only read a few)

  • Oedipus The King by Sophocles (17+)

  • Hamlet by Shakespeare (14+)

  • Much Ado About Nothing by Shakespeare

  • The Tempest by Shakespeare

My booklist: Harry Potter series, Nurse Matilda(book that inspired Nanny Mcphee),

A Journey to the Center of the Earth, The Time Machine (H.G Wells), The Merry Adventures

of Robin Hood, 3 Muskateers, etc...

Jules Verne wrote "A Journey to the Center of the Earth", not H.G. Wells. My favorite work by Verne is "Around the World in 80 Days", followed closely by "From the Earth to the Moon" and "All Around the Moon". H. G. Wells did write the excellent "First Men in the Moon".
