Less Derpy?

I know I'm going to get a lot of hate mail and bashers on this, but should the show and the fandom focus less on Derpy? I just feel like Derpy has gotten a little to big in the fandom and people are putting to much faith in her and focus a lot of time on her. Let me try and explain.

For one I don't understand why people still think that Derpy is going to have a big important episode or well have her own episode? After the, Last Round up problem the idea of her getting an episode should have left peoples mind, but still people still think that one day she is going to get an episode. I just don't see the writers or even the Hasbro taking that kind of chance again. Even if she showed up in the last episode, it does not mean she well have any part of season 4.

As for the fandom, I feel like there are more and more Derpy stuff going around and it always feels like the same thing. It could be a pick, a fan-fic, or even a video, it always shows her being a victim or being positive in someway. There doesn't seem to be a lot were she is just basic. It just feels like this is all she can do or even be apart of.

Like the Derpys Toy video.

Why did this user pick Derpy? He/She made every other character well, why not use one of them? Most likely they are also a huge fan of Derpy and wanted to show their love for her or could it be that they knew they would get more views if they used Derpy.

Now I'm not saying get rid of her, I just think maybe use her less or maybe we could try and make another character a main focus for a while and then bring back Derpy.

That is all I have to say. I await your comments and your hate mail.

Derpy already got the boot because of that ridiculous ableist campaign that that one person on DA did.  Anyway, the reason Derpy is such a big deal is because she was sort of the unofficial mascot of MLPG back in the day, and by continually tossing her in the background as an easter egg, it was sort of an acknowledgement that they were engaging with their fanbase on 4chan.  From there it kind of morphed into something completely different

I agree. She is pretty overrated. I think it would be cool if she had an episode, but I don't think it's going to happen, and I'm okay with it.

People think she is going to have a major role in an episode due to simple wishful thinking, I would like Derpy to have her own episode or at least the occasional speaking role but it is very unlikely that it will happen but it still likely that Derpy at the very least could make some more background appearances. I like that the fandom keeps making more Derpy material because it keeps Derpy as a character alive and I think people want to do that because they like the idea of Derpy as much as they like Derpy herself. Alot of bronies for various reasons are seen as different some due to disability and some for other reasons but they relate to Derpy because though it is not confirmed one way or another that she is disabled she is a bit different than the other ponies.

I'm gonna kinda disagree on you. I think we need MORE Derpy. See, she is the only character in the whole show that was taken away for some stupid reason, and if we continue to buy Derpy merchadise and talk about her maybe, just maybe Hasbro will change their minds.

They look at the fandom all the time, to see what to put out. If we continue to make videos, songs, and other items associated with Derpy maybe Hasbro will bring her back.

They won't.  They aren't going to risk controversy in order to throw in a little wink to fans.  Remember that first and foremost this show exists to drive toy sales.  They aren't going to do anything that would jeopardize that

Yes, but who buys most of the toys? Bronies! If they release more Derpy into the show, hece making more chaces for toys and more chances for money. More Derpy=More money.

Well I find that the creators of the show communicating to the fans in the beginning through derpy to be fascinating.

As for derpy and being in the show less, she really hasn't been in the show as much recently, and even if she was it frankly doesn't bother me. Neither does the fan content, I enjoy all kinds of fan content really.

Of course thats just me. Either way whether we get less or more derpy I won't be terribly affected. I do enjoy seeing her every so often though.

Oh I do agree with you that she probably won't be getting an episode, not after "Last Roundup" I just don't think hasbro will be willing to take the risk.

To be fair, it really is the fandom that gives her gross amounts of attention, not so much the show. And I'm just fine with that, myself.

As for how she has been portrayed in the show, I think she's been given a decent enough amount of exposure. I know everypony can't seem to get enough of her, but one should always remember that she is, after all, a background pony. To give her the amount of screen time that some hardcore Derpy fans demand...well, I definitely feel it would detract a bit from what really should be focused on the most - namely, the Mane 6 and their adventures. Don't get me wrong, it'd be cool to have maybe one episode dedicated to her in se04, but anything more than that would really be stretching it.

Besides, there may be a ton of fans saying "We need more Derpy in the show," but what about all the fans clamoring for more Octavia? More Vinyl? More Lyra, Dr. Whooves, Cloudchaser...the list goes on. Hell, I'd like to hear more from Big Mac, myself. My point is, if you start to give special attention to one BG pony, you gotta start giving it to the rest of them. That's why, all things considered, I'm just happy that she had her 15 seconds of fame (or infamy, given that a single misinformed soccer mom got her censored), and I'd be perfectly content to see little more than cameo appearances from her, personally.

That's just me, though. I speak for nopony else, clearly; I cannot deny the hugeness of Derpy's impact on this fandom, so I'd more or less understand if nopony else sees eye-to-eye with me on that point.

Derpy toys aren't made by Hasbro though.  I can't speak with confidence to their business model, but I don't think they make much off the licensing for Derpy, some royalties maybe.  Nowhere near enough to risk provoking the "hurr durr Derpy is offensive to the disabled" cast of white knights again

Even though I'm not a Derpy fan myself, I simply cannot hate the amount of love this "background character" is receiving~

What (probably) started up as a silly animation error turned out as one of the most iconic characters in the franchise, and I don't know how to explain it, but it feels just so adorable to me~ And the fact that the producers, to some extent, responded positively to it makes it even better.

Derpy is and will always be an excellent fan-content fuel. Other than that, her appearances in the show itself have never, and probably will never affect me much, personally. Still, that character is something that shouldn't be forgotten... Perhaps receive less attention since she may not deserve that much, yes, BUT I still love to watch the fans taking such a good care of a background pony. :3

I could personally do with a lot less Derpy myself. I can't even buy MLP merchandise from hot topic without her face being slapped in the middle somewhere. I think she's just one ugly pony that the fandom has "hyped" up for whatever reason. She's honestly not even that cute and her color scheme isn't that great either. Sorry but I'm anti Derpy and always will be. I guess I'm the minority in this category. Derpy gets no love for me, and I also hated the episode she was even featured in.

All the MLP toys are made by third-party manufacturers in Eastern Europe and China at the moment. Which is why all the product 'leaks' are from Chinese or Russian manufacturers. Hasbro itself only has two factories left that they actually own; one in the States, and one in Ireland, I think, and they're not making MLP toys. According to rumor they're in 'run-down' mode as it is, and are primarily doing repackaging rather than primary manufacturing. *All* MLP profits for Hasbro are from various forms of licensing, and most of the rest of Hasbro runs off of licensing as well.

Given that the Derpy toy was one of the Comic-Con exclusives sold directly from Hasbro's booth, not that long after the stupid 'Derpygate' episode, I think Hasbro itself has a thicker skin than people give it credit for.

Which doesn't mean we're going to get a resurgence of Derpy in the TV show. The TV show is commissioned through the Hub, which is owned by Discovery Communications, not Hasbro. Since Discovery is acting as a gatekeeper (to maintain the TVY rating), they get to call the shots on the main series. With Hasbro doing *everything* via licensing now-a-days, it probably doesn't want to jeopardize that broadcasting licensing deal. It would take a complete shift in corporate strategy to move away from that model.

I like that Derpy had her part in her own episode, but I don't think she needs her own. She's kind of a symbol of the fandom, so the fact that she's like an easter egg in each episode, a Where's Waldo type of thing, I think that's a neat little shout out to the fandom, saying they still pay attention to us. She's just fun to see, even though she has no lines, in my opinion. That's why there's so much merch of her, cause she's a symbol of us, I think.

I have to agree with you. She was a daughter of the fandom in a way. A simple animation glitch, and a hefty dose of internet, and bam! Instant Derpy! The reason I like her is because its okay to be different, its okay to be odd. The fuss over her being "offensive" was blown way out of proportion if you ask me. But in the end HUB had to do what they needed. I wouldn't mind seeing her even as a background pony, or a scene pony like in "Luna Eclipsed". But everyone is going to have a differing opinion of her. It's just my opinion that she one of the best background ponies in the show :3, not to mention all the Derpy fandom works that have been made.

Exactly, daughter of the fandom is the perfect way to describe her. She was special to us in many ways, and she always will be. If I recall right, there's some people trying to get a Derpy Scholarship or something going, made by bronies, so that the fandom will continue to carry on as long as the scholarship is supported.

On another note, I'm not so sure Hub did all they could, considering she's still in episodes and EqG, in the credits. I love that they did that though, I see it as a slight rebellion on their part, telling the parents that blew it way out of proportion to deal with it, though very subtly.

Plus you have to think what type of message it sends to kids that watch the show. Its like saying that its not okay to be different, and if you're odd you deserve to be in the background. I'm sorry but there is no such thing as "normal". Normality is an opinion, simple as that. I think having Derpy in the background is something they do for the fandom. Yeah she didn't have the best reception in her first speaking role, but maybe one day she'll be back. Plus I didn't mind the changes, except for her eyes. I like her new voice, and the name change is acceptable to me. Like I said before, I would like to see her more in the next season, and seeing how you still saw her in all her walleyed glory after Last Roundup, leaves me hopeful that she will be.

But people are still not going to like her, and that's fine with me too. That just means less ponies to share her with :3. lol

I think that Derpy's exposure in the series is just the right amount.  I don't want to have an episode focused on her, or even having her speak again is IMO unnecessary.  She's a background pony who's there as a wink and a nod to the fans, and I think that's exactly where she belongs.

As for her place in the fandom, I view her as the symbol for the connection between the fandom and the show itself.  We've embraced her as a character, the producers in turn recognize that through these little easter egg type appearances, which in turn makes the fandom love her and love the people behind the show even more.

Just going to ignore this whole topic. Now who cares if she's popular. Suddenly you are just going to hate on a background pony. You don't even know if she will get her own episode or not. I thought it was a free country and we could love which mane 6 pony or background pony we wanted. and Don't tell me that the show focuses a lot on Derpy. Hell, she doesn't even play more than 2 mins in a episode. Just leave her alone will ya?  I think I know why she gets so much spot light in the human world. Because, she's a better/more interesting background pony you see any day. Do your self a favor and stop hating.

I disagree. If there was something wrong with including Derpy, I'd see what you were saying, but there's nothing wrong with her. She's awesome.

That's what's wrong with her if you want to ask me. She's "awesome" you say? For doing what exactly? Standing in the background doing nothing of significance? Being the "Where's Waldo" of the show?

Pretty much. I couldn't have said it better myself. It's just the fact that she did nothing, yet had an interesting look, that made her so popular.

I have no problems with derpy being in the show more or less. I like just having them in the back ground to spot and then later find out how people have turned that 1 second scence into a full background story.

So really it's up to the writers, so everypony needs to keep calm and trust the writers :).

I think she is such a popular pony because two reasons one the Where's Waldo factor and two once she became know amongst the fans as a Wheres Waldo pony Hasbro thought it a good idea to drop her in the show and give her lines as well as a name that came from the fandom but, then took it away.

She is sort of a symbol to the fandom from the creators of the show in that the creators know about the huge fandom and give feed back accordingly. When the whole controversial Derpy incident happened and her name, eyes, and voice were taken out, to the fandom it was like taking the sweetness out of a cupcake that they made themselves. Which lead her to becoming even more popular.
