Carolina 212 July 5, 2013 Share July 5, 2013 This isn't a plot hole per se, but I was wondering what exactly happened to "the last girl who ran against Sunset Shimmer for Fall Formal Princess." They kept bringing her up, so I assumed she would show up eventually (actually, my first thought was that Rarity was the one who ran against her - for some reason), but it never really amounted to anything. I think it would have made Sunset Shimmer a much more threatening villain if we got to see what she was capable of by meeting this girl and observing how her reputation was ruined (or whatever Sunset did to her).

Actually, I think your assumption was partially correct. But not for the last Fall Formal. Fluttershy vaguely hints to what happened when she says "Just ask the last girl who ran against her for Princess of the Spring Fling." Rarity's last line is: "Of course we will. Although I do expect some sort of apology for last Spring's (can't hear what the final word is here, but I'm assuming it has something to do with the 'Spring Fling."

True, but she could have damaged the frame (okay, surrounding concrete/marble/whatever the statue plinth is made of), which *might* have done something? Not sure about that, but it's a thought.

Not sure about that, but it's a thought. Yes, but that's not what she was planning to do. She wanted to smash the portal itself, and didn't consider trying to break the statue itself. So even if she could have done it, her first idea was stupid. Another thing is the high school setting, which I think is the stupidest part of the movie: The mane 6 can work with the concept with a bit of a stretch, but other ponies have no place there. The CMC shouldn't be in a high school, and other ponies like Photo Finish are too old (at least I think so, in Green isn't your color, she seemed to be in her late 40s).
Anadu Kune 668 July 5, 2013 Share July 5, 2013 hmmm lets see. Well most of what bothered me had some indicating things but simply were not elaborated upon. 1. How exactly did Sunset Shimmer gain control over the element of magic? There is a hinted explanation that taking the element to another world effects/changes it in some way, but that's really it. It needed more elaboration. 2. How did Sunset Shimmer know so much about the element of harmony? How did she even know of its return? One could say she learned of it through the Canterlot library, though would any book contain info on the effects of the elements in other worlds/dimensions? 3. One wonders how Celestia knew of the nature of the other world. Though she is Celestia so...4. So Sunset's plan was to have an army of teenagers hyped up on magic which would become an army of Magical Unicorns, Pegasi, and Earth ponies when going through the portal. Doesn't sound too bad, However one wonders if Sunset knows about Luna's return, Princess Cadence, or Discord. She would have possessed the powers of a corrupt Element of Harmony so she would defiantly have been a power to be recond with in any case. Though again it needed more elaboration. But the statue frame creates the portal and therefore smashing it would in effect destroy the portal. Both portals have a frame acting as a gateway between worlds, destroy the gateway and the portal goes with it.Given the way she is standing she very well could have been aiming at the frame and that's what I thought on my two viewings. There's nothing in her dialog saying she intends to swing at the opening of the portal itself. Also age and time are ambiguous in mlp. We have no way of definitively determining the age of the ponies or the age difference between ponies and humans in mlp. There's also the fact that the other world has different rules or physical laws. Magic is shown not to work there with the exception of when the two worlds are connected. There's also just the general differences on the whole such as the fact that Twilight's counter part had not met her friends. It was a different world in that world things are different which may include the age of the counterparts and definitely their occupations and places in the world. kirbyboi 588 July 5, 2013 Share July 5, 2013 (edited) I found a lot of plot-holes, but I'll mention some that seemed important. 1. (And the one that confuses/bothers me the most)....FLASH SENTRY. Twilight just fell for him in a bit, he asks her to dance, then she leaves...and she met his pony alternative in Equestria....and I'm super disapointed he won't be showing up in season 4!!! Hopefully we can see/know him more!! So sad how Twilight had to leave him... 2. Sunset Shimmer. I know they can only put so much content in an hour movie, but I wanted to know MORE about her. And the fact that she become a good guy so quickly was kinda random. And her new form, although pretty powerful, was goofy-looking. And...will she be the leader of the mane six in that world? And I figure she should play a bigger part in season 4...she has plenty of room for more backstory and future MLP plots. 3.The portal. Ok...so after the 30-moon phase, when the portal re-opens, can't some people from the human world come into Equestria as well? And if there's already pony versions of them in Equestria...how would that work? :< I liked Equestria Girls, but hopefully they can make a second movie to help with all this!! :3 I would LOVE to see another movie done!!! RockinRarity 1,605 July 5, 2013 Share July 5, 2013 Anyone notice how when Twilight bumps into pony Flash Sentry, he says that they have GOT to stop bumping into each other like that. But... they never bumped into each other except in the alternate world. I understand that he said that so that Twilight would recognize him, but Flash says the line like he was in the alternate world the whole time. Except he wasn't, because he was the same Flash that broke up with Sunset Shimmer. Unless... Flash goes after the crown before everyone else and then switches with his human self, and then winds up going through the portal before Twilight does. Ow! My head! Booksmith 87 July 6, 2013 Share July 6, 2013 (edited) Fun fact: The crown that SSS left in Equestria was identical in every way to the actual crown. In the human world when they were getting ready for the formal Rarity opened this box, which looks a lot like the box the elements are kept in, in Equestria. So basically the human world elements of harmony were in Rarity's possession all along, just waiting to be given to the right people to empower them with their virtues. The crown SSS replaced was the human world element of magic which had not been activated because the human world Twilight had never made friends with the human version of the five friends. The "fake crown" left in Equestria, to no doubt be thrown in the trash, was humanities last hope to unlock the power of friendship and unite the world in a peaceful future. On an amusing but less plot hole like point: I also like the foreshadowing about Flash Sentry and why she's going to fall for him so hard. I like to think it's a nod to the bronies and their strange obsession with wing boners. This isn't a plot hole per se, but I was wondering what exactly happened to "the last girl who ran against Sunset Shimmer for Fall Formal Princess." It was Rarity. That is why Human-Rarirty says she wants an apology from Sun Set Shimmer at the end of the movie. She was the one who got black mailed by SSS and that is why she is really good at disguising people. She had to live with shame since the previous dance. Anyone notice how when Twilight bumps into pony Flash Sentry, he says that they have GOT to stop bumping into each other like that.But... they never bumped into each other except in the alternate world.I understand that he said that so that Twilight would recognize him, but Flash says the line like he was in the alternate world the whole time. A lot of people didn't think the SSS thing through. Celestia said she was a student shortly before Twilight was but when she didn't get what she wanted, as fast as she wanted she turned cruel. Remember that Twi became Celestia's student in Magical Kindergarten so that means SSS would have still been a child when she ran away and got displaced into the human world. She had a decade to make a new life and she was obviously coming back to Equestria keeping tabs on things in secret every year so she knew who Twi was and was able to keep the human-Twilight away from her Human-5. She had a decade of hatefulness with no friends, no attachments to anyone even the foster parents she was put with because she was planning on going back to Equestria and ruling it. She became "Good" all of the sudden for the same reason Discord did: It was the first time they ever felt real friendship. She was emotionally raped by the rainbow and forced to feel friendship. We're just going to let that complete violation of her core being slide because emotional and mental rape is OK if you are doing it for a good reason, just ask Cadence and her "Love magic." As to the Moon thing, yeah, they totally messed that up. In the start the crown is stolen at night, but pops out the other side of the portal in the middle of the afternoon. So they must operate on different time lines. But remember, the only time we actually -see- the night sky in Equestria is when Luna create an illusion using her magic. So that could have just been her imagination being projected. (Reusing frames from the animation) The portal is most likely completely controlled by the cycle of the moon on Human-Earth and Luna was just illustrating what she should be looking for. Shawn Parks 1,798 July 6, 2013 Share July 6, 2013 Some people already mentioned the things that I questioned - Where did Sunset Shimmer live in the human world, and what was her motivation for breaking up friendships? I also wonder why Sunset Shimmer did not simply bring to Principal Celestria's attention the fact that Twilight was not really a student at the school.

Actually, you see the moon and the three stars around it right after the title sequence and it cuts to SSS infiltrating the palace I also agree with you that Equestria and the human world are on different day-night cycles. Likely due to the Sun and moon moving on their own in the human world and being controlled by celestia and luna in Equestria. Its entirely possible that Equestrian days are longer/shorter than human days because of this.

It ruins the illusion for me if I know who is who's voice actress. It bugs the crap out of me when I know which characters share the same original voice because I can hear it once I know but if I don't they are just the voices of the characters. The "fake crown" left in Equestria, to no doubt be thrown in the trash, was humanities last hope to unlock the power of friendship and unite the world in a peaceful future. I was thinking along the same lines. During the dress up sequence, the costume jewelry with the cutie marks were focused on quite a bit. I thought it was some kind of foreshadowing. "Conventional" magic may not be available in this world but the Elements of Harmony and Magic of Friendship might still be powerful enough to work here. Sure enough, they allowed the humans to access the power of their elements the same way the necklaces do for the ponies. But I didn't really give much thought to the "fake" crown that in all likelihood is part of the humanoid physical element collection. That world's real Twilight Sparkle is going to need it someday and hopefully she won't be forced to wait 30 moons to get it. But pony Twilight knows by now that the other crown is needed too. It's not going to get trashed. But delivering it to the other Twilight will be a challenge and might make a nice future story in its own right. Dreadmallon 353 July 7, 2013 Share July 7, 2013 1. Twilight never went to class 2. The element of magic was powerful on its own, as opposed to needing the other elements 3. Near the end, it is made clear that Spike can talk, yet in Fluttershy's introduction, he can only bark 4. Someone as wise as Luna would've noticed the obvious craft work that Sunset Shimmer framed Twilight with. 5. The mane 5 never attempted to make up their friendship after Sunset Shimmer sabotaged it, something real friends would've done I agree with all your points except this one. Spike could talk during Fluttershy's introduction, but he wanted to fit in, along with Twilight, so he completely disguised himself by limiting himself to barking, except to Twilight, of course. Back on topic, the only question I honestly have is where was Sunset Shimmer's human counterpart for the "last thirty moons?" Everyone else others mentioned (Discord, Cadance, etc.) could've been off doing something else in the human world (For example, Cadance is too old for High School, especially if the HuMane 6 are seniors; Discord could've been doing anything). But it is implied that the well-known characters of MLP:FiM live in the same county. So, for about two and a half years (which I believe is the equivalent to "thirty moons"), where was Sunset Shimmer's counterpart? Speaking of which, where was Twilight's counterpart? Oh, and I would've loved a scene where Twilight's in a science class (Physics, Biology, Chemistry, etc.), and she's just completely confused, being a magician. The lack of key mirror characters was a huge plot hole for me. I mean, why did we even NEED a Sunset Shimmer? Why not just have Mirror-Twilight be evil because she never made friends and grew bitter then discovered the mirror in her obsessive arcane research as a nerdy shut in secretly looking for power to change the world to the way she liked it? Without a teacher or friends, Twilight's character flaws would have grown unchecked and would have made for a good villain. Instead we get disposable-plot-element-pony which just opens more questions than she answers. I like to think that we all know where Discord was in a world without magic. Being awesome: I agree with everything except Sunset Shimmer. I thought she was a very interesting character, but the writers just didn't execute her well enough. She wasn't a horrible character, but I felt no emotional bond to her character, which actually surprised be considering her backstory. Just overall disappointing. I do, however, hope we see her again in the future of the show, and that she returns without a PIS reason (which may be difficult, as the writers seemed to close out her story at the end of Equestria Girls). To summarize my feelings about Sunset Shimmer in Equestria Girls: She reminded me of better Venom from Spider-Man 3. She was executed poorly, and was disappointing, but she wasn't unbearable by any means and still an alright villainess.
ThunderShock1 24 July 13, 2013 Share July 13, 2013 Something that is kinda weird. Near the end, Twilight says this: "Yes, but I've also seen what you've been able to do here without magic. Shawn Parks 1,798 July 13, 2013 Share July 13, 2013 How did Sunset Shimmer manage to live in the other world for 4 (?) years? Who was she living with? And what happened to the that universe's version of Sunset Shimmer? Maybe she killed the human version and took over her life, living with her family and going to her school. Another thing I thought might be a plot hole was the fact that the Element only has any power on its own while in the human world. If Sunset Shimmer took her army of teenagers into Equestria, wouldn't the spell she put on them stop working? Also the spell she put on herself and her cronies to turn into monsters? Near the end, it is made clear that Spike can talk, yet in Fluttershy's introduction, he can only bark Spike was just pretending to bark so he wouldn't blow his cover. Near the end I think he spoke without thinking, or just didn't care anymore because all that junk was going on because he said "A talking dog? THATS the weird thing about all this?" I mean, people already saw a demon student and pony/human hybrids. I can't imagine them caring all that much about a talking dog.
