Game Discussion: Does SEGA know what they're doing?

Ever since Sonic the Hedgehog made the 3D switch, it seems as if he hasn't been doing so good. With games like Sonic 2006, Shadow the Hedgehog, and Unleashed, Sonic has been failing in the 3D gaming department. I've even had someone tell me that he was probably MEANT to be in 2D side-scroller format.

What do you think? Does SEGA know what they're doing with their mascot?

Huh? Well I think Sonic is doing fine in the 3D department. I've recently finished Sonic Generations and that game had a good score.(IGN gave it a 8.5/10 I think)  Also Sonic Colors wasn't so bad either. The color wisps were cute and the story was original. (I'm not trying to say all sonic games are overrated btw) I liked those games and I also can't wait for Sonic Lost Worlds too :D

Considering the positive reception of both Sonic Colors and Generations, I think they've got a good grasp of how to handle the series

Haven't played Generations, but I did like Colors a lot

I've actually never got the chance to truly experience Colors. I've only played it once, and that was when my friend brought it over. But until I actually own the game, I think it's safe to say that I've never truly played it.

(edited)

The Sonic Adventure games were the first 3D Sonic games, and they were very enjoyable.

I assume it was only during the mid/late-2000's when they weren't doing so great, which was when Shadow the Hedgehog and Sonic '06 came out. However, the good thing about this happening is how Sega realized their mistakes. You have to understand what went wrong if you hit rock-bottom, right?

And now that we've stepped into the 2010's, and since the release of Sonic Colours, it seems as if 3D Sonic is starting to climb back up to the spotlight, and I have to say, I am definitely looking forward to Sonic Lost World.

Hi, welcome to Sega Bo--- wait...

Err... Someone said Sonic was MEANT to be 2D? Who here has played Sonic 4 Episode I? Anybody that has knows the physics were really screwed up in that game--sure, they used the Rush engine which doesn't translate well to a console, but that was a 2D game, and it wasn't up to par.

Personally, I love all of the 3D Sonic games. Yeah, 06 had that cheesy storyline, and Unleashed had the Werehog, but they were still solid games and still fun to play. If you can't tolerate the load times in 06, then don't play Unleashed on PS2, you'll hate that one too ;)

Heroes was an amazing game for Sonic's first venture onto a non-Sega console. It was fun, challenging, and still kept up the pace. Sonic Advance was Ok, but I'd say Advance 2 was the best, it was a solid platformer, and worked well on the GBA.

Not trying to bash anyone here, but not every game developer has a perfect streak, look at Rockstar, Valve, etc. There's certainly some games there you won't like either, it's hit and miss, simple. Logically, Sonic going 3D is just as bad as Mario, Pokemon, Metroid, GTA, and so on, going 3D.

Personally, I think the newer Sonic games are better than the old ones. The 3D ones have always been more fun to me than the old 2D ones. Of course, I didn't despise Shadow the Hedgehog or Sonic '06 as much as a majority of the fandom; but that's just me personally.

People defending the likes of Shadow the Hedgehog and 06? Wow, never thought I'd see the day.

Before I continue let me clarify something, I haven't been a Sonic fan since the release of Adventure 2 Battle on the Gamecube, but I have played and beat Sonic Generations, which was pretty good for a Sonic game. I'm not a big fan of the fast, race car-esque gameplay Sonic Team has used as of late, so it's great to see them take more of a platforming approach with Lost World. Lost World also has a likeness to Sonic X-treme, which is very interesting. Definitely going to look into that one when it gets released.

I'm not a huge Sonic fan, I've only played the classics. Well, I played a 3D one when I was getting a haircut when I was eight. But after Colonial Marines I don't plan on buying any Sega games for a long time. Same goes for Capcom. I'm sick of them releasing the same title four times.

Sega starting to go a bit downhill after Sonic 4 Episode 2 in my opinion.

I like Sega but now its going downhill because there trying their best to keep up.

I mean, I like Sega for the games like:

  • Ghost Squad
  • Sonic CD to Sonic Generations
  • Monkey Ball
  • Sonic All-Stars Racing

Needless to say, their doing OK.

I pretty much like every 3D Sonic game except for '06 and Shadow the Hedgehog. I think Unleashed was a pretty good game, even with the Werehog (At least it's just Sonic now!), Colors was very good as well and Generations was just amazing. I think Sega has a pretty good idea of what they're doing now.

Sega's seen a slip, but they (and Sonic in particular) are making a noticeable comeback. Sonic Unleashed saw the beginning of that, Sonic Colors was even better than that, and Sonic Generations was undeniably awesome.

Tbqh I've enjoyed the Sonic games Segas released. I've been playing Sonic games since I was little and we had a genesis system. As long as Sega releases Sonic games I like then I'm happy. People can hate all they want but these games have been making me smile since I was a little girl. Not to sound rude but as long as they keep making games that make me smile then I couldn't give a crap about what the majority thinks. If they love it, they love it. If they hate it, they hate it. Not gonna change how I feel about it.
