The Button

Recommended Posts

There are over 7 billion people in this world. The chances of it killing someone I care about is very, very, VERY slim. Hell, it is pretty much free money.

The extent of my interest is in things that don't exist.

Or, at least, things that aren't in the basic man's senses

NOPE NEVER.

In the end, money in this world is meaningless. No matter how much you get you are never happy with it and always want more.

Killing a random person in the world would almost defiantly impact on other around them. Imagine if a family member or best friend just dropped dead?

For science!!!! *rapidly clicks the button*

If this were a real scenario, of course I wouldn't even think of pressing it. Firstly, I wouldn't feel like I actually earned the money gained from pressing the button. Secondly, this random life does mean something to someone and who am I to take that life away? It doesn't matter if the life taken is irrelevant to me, I will live with the guilt knowing I took a random innocent strager's life early for my own personal gain.

... But even more realistically, the button is just a modified easy button.

If any of you have seen the movie, you wouldn't push the button.

In the scenario the person who presses the button gets the previous button-presser killed. Then the cycle continues. (Pro tip: You Die)

So no, I would not press the button, ever.

a life is a life no matter what and can't be evaluated in money

a child from uganda or a child from norway or america, whatever is just as much worth as you and me and everyone has the right to live their life's and to the fullest

even hitler was a human being and probably just wanted to live his life, just like you and me

it's getting late, my grammar isn't at the top

You guys are so freaking selfish lol

Like what mineral said, everyone, all 7 billion people on this planet are equally important and have the right to live out their lives. You wouldn't want to take that away from them, no matter how much money your given.

Plus like Chigens mentioned, it could be like one of those trippy movies involving the myterious killer button.

So hells no.

Considering how low the odds are that I will kill someone I care about and the fact that everyone where I live despises me, I would press the button. There are so many things I would do with three million dollars. I'm keeping it secret though, no one is allowed to know. :P

No, I may know the person I may not but the fact is that by pressing the button I am committing murder no matter who it is. For those of you who said you would press the button I have a question if say instead of a button you had a gun and were blindfolded and had to shoot an unknown victim you may or may not know would you do pull the trigger? If not why not? You would be doing the same exact thing by pushing the button but the only difference is you wouldn't see the victim. This seems like a classic case of out of sight out of mind, it is easy to morally extricate ourselves from a situation if we don't see the suffering firsthand. It reminds me of this phrase I heard once "if your neighbor loses his job it is a recession, when you lose your job it is a depression."

I remember doing a thread very similar to this one about a month back 0_o, I believe it was called Cognitive Dissonance

My answer: No, I would never press that button. Not for all the money in the world, it would destroy me emotionally that I had ended some innocents life just for money.

you are given a button.

if you push the button, someone you may or may not know, will die, but you will receive 3 million dollars for it.

would you do it?

Yes...

Gruesome as some think it is my motto stands.

Yer born, you live, and you die.

The former is done, get over it, and the latter is inevitable so deal with it.

That part in the middle is where the fun is, LIVE WITH IT!

I know I'm supposed to fear death, but I just can't find a logical reason in doing so.... I mean really.. its going to happen anyways.. Live life, and have fun! Don't be concerned with the END of it, live for the NOW for crying out loud...

Wheres the fun in always playing safe?! You can't guarantee 5 minutes from now, let alone years from now.

Sure its good to have a plan for the future, and its right to be concerned for safety in general.

But some people take this WAY to far....

That and I know so few people I "care" about, its hard to justify not pressing the button.....

Nope, I don't want that money.

Because usually, Alot of money = Problems.

And what's the meaning of life if you can do whatever you want without working for it?

You are not only killing someone on Earth, but also something in you.

I dunno, it'd give me more work :)

I'd pay off my mortgage and car, then put the rest into cleaning up and getting my yard nicely setup for light farm work.

Probably more food making critters, lots more trees, etc...

Then  if anythings left, dump a fair amount to savings and the rest to a local animal shelter.

Keep working, work my land, and give to charity. Pretty sure I'm covered.. I agree, not working would be BORING....

I'm Unemployed atm and it is driving me INSANE!...

I know myself well enough to know that I would push the button and then refuse the money. Of course, with my luck it'd probably kill me...

Would I do it? Yes...

As soon as he says someone will die and I earn money for doing it, I'll instantly do it, I consider myself very dark in general.

Well, why not!? It's all for the name of science and self gain.  But the odds of someone I know dying are 7+billion: 1 So... I'm gonna click that button.

*The following applies only to people who are serious about pressing the button*

This is execrable, sickening, and fucked so bad that it is beyond the meaning of every word in the span of human speech.  There's a difference between just being greedy, and being evil.  I guess modern society has glorified evil so much through the media that people lose their humanity and pursue it thinking that they are cool or something.  I hope that all of you, given the actually scenario was available to you, would think otherwise.  If not, you are nothing but a pig.  I am entirely disappointed at these responses.

If this is how fucking abhorrent this community has grown to be, I don't know if I want any part in it anymore.  I hate this generation.

If I would be granted eternal life and promoted to demigod after pushing the button, I still would not do it if it meant taking the life of another human being.

I'd probably be a bit tempted, but I would not do that.

The odds of killing someone I love are extremely slim, but the odds of killing someone that someone else loves is very high.  And how could I take anyway someones loved one like that just for money that I'll end up spending on useless junk?

(in other words, pony stuff)

You are seriously freaking out over people's opinions? I'm sorry but I can't take you seriously. You did ask a question, didn't you?

Guess what, this thing called The Internet isn't going to show people's true intentions. I guarantee half of the people including myself were just answering how they did for laughs.  I know that I did, and I'm sure that many were too.

Another thing, don't jump to a conclusion, especially if it is such a harsh one! The way you said it was just demeaning.  You have no right to put other people down for a display of their mindset. You are being no better than the people you put down!

This community was founded not on the idea of MLP, but the ideal that different is better.  You saying that those who said, "yes" are wrong, is throwing what you liked about the community on the ground and desecrating it.  We came together that we are safe under our own thoughts here when the rest of the world doesn't want us to think for ourselves.

The world says, "follow the crowd."

The Brony community says, "break away from the norm. Express!"

This entire question was hypothetical! Therefore, the answers are only METAPHYSICAL! So you overdramatizing everyone's response by using the words you chose to use is just as bad.

I speak probably on the behalf of everyone, "get over it." This wasn't a real exam of our life choices and moral values, it was a fun question you presented. SO PLEASE, keep fun, fun. Leave the crappy attitude out of it, thank you. :3

Oink oink then.

I've been over it with others already tbh.

While I value life, I question the value of the life of an organism that is not only destroying itself, but everything around it.

I.E. Human life.

Even when I go I've specifically told people I'd rather be dumped in a ditch and my belongings divided up and/or sold off.

I'm dead at this point, nothing left but an empty husk. If anyone wants the parts they can have'em, but no special services desired.

Despite my funeral services will already be covered under my Veterans benefits. 'cept instead of a ditch its a burial at sea, or plot in a vets graveyard... neither particularly appeal, the ditch sounds better, fodder for the animals and the worms.

Like I also said, I don't really know anyone, let alone care enough about any one in particular to feel much concern over the concept. I live alone, and I'm not a very openly social person normally.

I've been around death a LOT as it stands, so its impact is a bit lost at this point.

But yeah.. chill pill time, anyone got a spare for this person?

You are seriously freaking out over people's opinions? I'm sorry but I can't take you seriously. You did ask a question, didn't you?

Well, you have to be taking me seriously, otherwise you would not have posted this long and seemingly detailed (but truly incompetent) response.

Guess what, this thing called The Internet isn't going to show people's true intentions. I guarantee half of the people including myself were just answering how they did for laughs.  I know that I did, and I'm sure that many were too.

Which is why I said that, if you actually we're put to the test, I would hope that you would act differently.  There is redemption from my post in the words right there.  You we're asked a question by the OP, and would probably be expected (by most people) to give an answer pertaining to your actual views.  There is no reason to be offended by my post if you are certain that you actually would not do it.  Just because I quoted you doesn't mean I was singling you or anyone else out for judgement.  I was merely counting the "yes's" and comparing them to the "no's."  My post applies to the people who actually would do it, and hey, if you said you would, how am I supposed to know you are joking?

Another thing, don't jump to a conclusion, especially if it is such a harsh one! The way you said it was just demeaning.  You have no right to put other people down for a display of their mindset. You are being no better than the people you put down!

Don't jump to conclusions?  I'm making a statement based off of concluded answers to the original post.

Well, knowing that I wouldn't go so far as to kill an innocent human being for a few million dollars, I think its pretty safe to say We all have the right to put people down, especially If someones "mindset" involves the devaluation of sentient life.  This is a very destructive mindset that I see grow and influence.

One time, in gym class at my old high school, kids were asked weather or not they would abduct someone's child and murder them for a million dollars.  Everyone except for me and a few other guys said they would.  The guys in this class we're all total dicks, so I wouldn't put it past them if they were serious.  (Which I presume them to be)  As you can imagine, experiences like this shaped the way I view people of our generation.

You expect me to know your thoughts and differentiate them from your post.  How the hell am I supposed to be able to tell if you are serious or not, especially when you don't say that you are actually joking?  Like I said, if you we're just joking, then you are exempt from my criticism, so there is no reason to be offended.

The Brony community says, "break away from the norm. Express!"

Not all of it does.  This was not my reason for joining; this just seems like the hipster element to the fandom.

I actually didn't present the question.  Regardless, if you don't want me to take any of your posts face-value, you should probably let me know in your post especially if it involves a topic that could very well be regarded as serious by a variety of people.  I'm not even criticizing you, which is why I said in my original post that I had hope that some of the people who said "yes" are not serious.  There is no reason to be so defensive if you actually know you wouldn't do it.

I even went back and edited the post just for you, to make it more clear that the post applies only to people who would actually press the button.

@@John,  Dude, you need some air. Go outside and calm down. You are overreacting over absolutely nothing.

"Nothing!? This is EVERYTHING!"

no jk.

This is by far the dumbest statement you have made. You hate this generation because of opinions on the internet? Grow up.

Opinions are opinions.  It shouldn't matter weather or not they are expressed over the internet, or in person.  Perhaps I just take theoretical involving the value of human life more seriously than you do.
