What happen to Applejack in Season 3?

I go back to look at in Winter Wrap Up when Applejack got hard Twilight for messing up and using magic. There are also other moments like Ponyville Confidential where she is hard on Applebloom.

 

Season 3, she seems to have gotten a bit soft at inappropriate times.

 

For one Applejack didn't tell the CMC about Babs troubles of being bullied because it would single her out. That situation had its own troubles and the CMC suffered for it.

 

Then there is Spike at your Service where Applejack doesn't get on to Spike for making a mess, like Winter Wrap Up would have expected.

Applejack feels that she does not want to hurt their feelings, but there are times where she learns some lessons from her mistakes. She shows her Element of Honesty in some episodes while, she can be either forgiving or stubborn.

Applejack got mad at Twilight for using magic both because it messed things up and because she likely considered it cheating because doing things the "old fashioned way" is considered correct in this situation because it is tradition. And she was hard on Applebloom because she ignored all decency and propriety and exposed the secrets of many of the residents of Ponyville including Applejack and Big Mac. Simply put Applebloom did a real dick move and got what she deserved, sue she is only a child but children don't learn unless you show them discipline.

 

Applejack can be tough at times but that dosen't mean that she dosen't have a soft side, she was concerned about Bab's and probably thought it was best that she be treated like any other filly. Applejack didn't know that Bab's would bully the CMC and they did hide it from her and others when they should have talked to her or another adult about it. And she didn't get on Spike because though he messed things up his heart was in the right place even if he was being a bit of a doofus.

As the element of honesty, she has to tell the truth, but to her, it can hurt the feelings of her friends and anyone she meets.

 

She's just too nice, friendly, and overall honest to be brutally honest.

For starters, there is no way that Applejack could have known that Babs was going to bully the CMC. There was never any sign of it because Apple Bloom and Babs were getting along fine at first. Had AJ caught Babs mistreating the fillies, you can bet your flank that she would have stepped in. She's proven herself to be one to speak her mind in most cases, and she has somewhat of a motherly side to her, and that includes scolding a filly who has misbehaved. Apple Bloom has certainly had plenty of experience with it.

 

Spike's mess-ups in Spike At Your Service and Twilight's misbehavior in Winter Wrap Up were two different ball games. In the former, Spike was trying so hard to help Applejack through some honest hard work because he felt he absolutely needed to do it, and Applejack could understand him in that delicate situation. Twilight on the other hand, willingly disobeyed a rule against using magic, and the consequences of her behavior were far greater than Spike burning a pie or making a huge mess in the kitchen. (To Spike's credit, he did successfully count blades of grass and clean the pig without difficulty.) Applejack is a pony who takes pride in living by her traditions, and she doesn't like when her methods or ideas are challenged because she's very set in her ways. She scolded Twilight because Twilight's an adult who should have known better than to use magic when it was not permitted. Spike meant well in everything that he did, but his over excitement caused him to be clumsy and make messes. Applejack was conflicted and felt that it was her own fault for letting Spike do chores for her.

 

Thanks for yet another Applejack thread though. These topics give me something to post on an otherwise slow day. Plus, you reminded me just how complex and interesting Applejack is. She's a very realistic character. I honestly would have done the same thing with both Twilight and Spike if I were in AJ's position. Twilight should have known better, even if her intentions were good. Spike, being a baby dragon, doesn't really know better.

Applejack wouldn't have known that the Cutie Mark Crusaders were getting bullied by Babs since they didn't want to be a snitch.

 

I don't think AJ would want to hurt Spike's feelings, either, though.

I agree. I would have acted much differently in Applejack's situation. I would've been very firm with spike from the very beginning and insist that the best thing he could do to repay me is NOT try to repay me for saving his life.

 

And of course with the Bab's Seed situation I would have gotten them all together and talked about it as a group as soon as Bab's arrived in Ponyville.
