Upcoming "Daring Don't" episode speculation

When I read the synopsis for the upcoming "Daring Don't" episode (this saturday), I have a strange feeling that I saw it somewhere already: once I described a similar idea in one of my posts (notice the posting date). For the record, I paste it here again:

Rainbow Dash reads another book about Daring Do, and notices that some places described there are real. She starts following the clues and finds out that Daring Do really exists, and it's her who wrote all those books (Daring Do, that is). But from some reason she's not much a heroine anymore. Or has she ever been? Or maybe it's all just a bunch of hooey? Is it possible that Dashie's admired heroine is just all hat but no cattle? Or maybe she is just trying to hide some scary secret from her past? Can Rainbow Dash restore her back to action and could they involve in some adventure together? (Maybe you can mix it somehow with point 2.)

And the point 2 was the following:

One day in Ponyville, a ground cracks and opens a hole to some tunnels underground. Who might drill them and why? Are there some monsters lurking in the dark? Or maybe some treasures?

Now, could it be possible that the writers of the show have found it and they incorporated it into the upcoming episode? Could it be possible that the A. K. Yearling (an obvious allusion to J. K. Rowling, I guess) is actually Daring Do herself, as in my idea described there? That is, she wrote all these books about Daring Do, and these books were about herself. Daring Do is her pseudonym, and her real name is A. K. Yearling. From some reason she doesn't participate in any adventures anymore, but she hides as an author of these books.

This theory seems even more plausible when I look at their promotional poster:

This book writer (A. K. Yearling, I guess) looks very familiar: khaki coat, gray mane, magenta eyes... If this isn't Daring Do undercover then I don't know who else it might be :-P

My idea was that Rainbow Dash finds her and at first she's disappointed that her heroine from the books isn't what she thought her to be. But then she discovers that these adventures in the past were real, so she tries to convince Daring Do to get back into action again; maybe by arranging some daring adventure for her, which with time turns out to be also real, when the bad guys (Ahuizotl & his crew) finds out about the hiding place of Daring Do (thanks to Dash's unaware efforts).

This could be a great idea for an episode, I guess, but I also worry that it might actually be exactly the way I invented it, because what then? I would have mixed feelings, because in one hand, it is great to see your own episode ideas realized in the actual TV show, but in the other hand, it's horrible to see that someone else did it instead, exploiting your idea and calling it their own.

What do you think about it all? Should I be worried, or happy? Could it be that the upcoming episode will employ my exact ideas? (Because from the synopsis it really looks very similar.)

You should really redo this post. I'm not sure it sounds awful, self-centered and entitled enough yet.

Exploiting your idea? Really?!

I once had an idea for a product. Turned out someone else had the idea first and was already selling it, had a website and everything. I didn't start talking about how my ideas are being exploited because you don't just magically own ideas. Get over yourself.

That is a good idea though. :)

You should really redo this post.

Don't tell me what I should. I expressed my true ideas and feelings about that, and changing them, or the above post, would mean not being true with myself (which for me is worse than being called a self-centered whatever). What's wrong with feeling that way, anyway, that caused you to react so... um... scolding?

Exploiting your idea? Really?!

I once had an idea for a product. Turned out someone else had the idea first and was already selling it, had a website and everything. I didn't start talking about how my ideas are being exploited because you don't just magically own ideas. Get over yourself.

Where did I say that I own any idea?

I know very well that ideas are immaterial and cannot be owned and I advocate this approach quite often.

But they can be originated (invented/authored), and if you didn't notice, there's a whole business turning around so called copyright, which is all about owning the rights for expressing some ideas in public. Try to write a book, for example, and call it "Friendship is Magic", and you'll see that even if it isn't about ponies at all, Hasbro's lawyers would jump on your back right away after you publish it, saying something about a trademark or copyright. Isn't it just an idea? Haven't you invented this title yourself? (Let's suppose you did, knowing nothing about some show about ponies.) True. But this would be a no argument for Hasbro's lawyers, I guess.

Also I didn't say that the episode is a rip-off of my ideas (especially before I watch it to find out). I just have such worries, and that's all. I know that people sometimes have similar ideas independently. But there are also cases where they actually rip off from each other (plagiarism is a word for that). I hope this isn't the case here, but there is always such a possibility, and a big corporation is always on a better position than a mere user form the Internet.

I don't want to burst anyone's bubble, but let me tell you something about "Equestria Girls".

Before even Hasbro came out with it, there were lots of fan arts and animations showing human versions of ponies. Some of them much better than those of EqG. It was months before Hasbro even mentioned the idea in public. Then, there was a website equestriagirls.com, where there was a fanmade animation mocking Katy Perry's song "California Girls". It was all fan ideas. So as the portal to Equestria from the Human World and the effects of transforming humans into ponies and vice versa when passing through it (I described it myself a year ago, too, unfortunately in a private conversation).

And then suddenly Hasbro trademarked the name "Equestria Girls", and then just ruthlessly took over the equestriagirls.com domain name, claiming that they own it due to trademark law! (I cannot imagine how it is even possible to patent or trademark something that is already there from a long time, publicly known, which is called "prior art" in the copyright law.) Then they made a movie "Equestria Girls" with characters suspiciously similar to most fan arts out there; the only noticeable difference being the recoloring of their skin, which looks stupid, but I guess it was some law trick to circumvent the potential copyright claims from the fans.

As much as I love EqG, I hate when corporations can ruthlessly steal from their very recipients which can then do nothing about it, but when the fans use their ideas to make their creations ("Fighting is Magic" video game being a notable example), the corporations' lawyers have no compunction to Crash & Destroy them (that is, sending a C&D letter to them). Sounds like a huge hypocrisy to me.

And to show you that such rip-offs already happened in the past, just look at this cartoon and tell me if it reminds you something familiar:

So yeah, ideas cannot be owned, unless you're a big corporation.

Edit: I've just found another idea of someone else which could be incorporated into this episode. First look at this fragment:

"Let's make a book.

Dash decides that the daring do books are coming out way to slow. The mane six decides to help her make a book."

and then the fragment from the official synopsis:

"When Rainbow Dash discovers that the new A.K. Yearling book she has been eagerly anticipating is delayed, she recruits her reluctant pony friends to spring into action to ensure the book gets written. However, when the ponies arrive to help the famous author (...)"

Yeah, just a coincidence...

Just so you know, they finished writing the episodes about a year before they premiere , so they had long wrapped up writing the idea by the time you came up with yours.

Besides I doubt that any fans could lay a legitimate copyright claim when it comes to the humanized ponies, as they're clearly derivations of copyrighted characters. Unless you can call them parodies, which they're not, I don't think the fan works have any legal standing.

Speaking of Daring Do........

This was my speculation in October, but this thread reminded me of it. Anyone notice how the DD books are only the most recent volumes, and the first half of the series has already been discussed? There's a gap in the middle. I don't have the books in front of me right now, but I think it's 6 and 7 that haven't been shown in FiM or sold as a book.

Season 5 material?

Hey guys, we've got a thread for discussing this episode. Please continue this over there. If you've got any general musings on things about characters or show lore that were spawned by the episode, feel free to make a thread dedicated to it in Show Discussion.

Can't really speculate on an episode that's aired, so I think it's safe to say this thread has long since run its course. Locking it up now.
