Welcome back my friends,

to the show that never ends!

We're so glad you could attend

Come inside! Come inside!

Similar vein as Crispy's Metal thread, but with some resources for fellow and aspiring Prog fans to look further into the genre.

ProgArchives

Wiki Prog Page

While there are some inaccuracies in the system that ProgArchives has set up (mostly in bands being labeled incorrectly), it's enough to give anyone a very good idea of just how diverse the genre can be, with numerous divisions mentioned. Each division has a separate page offering a bit of a background on the origins of that particular formula within the genre, as well as some key bands (and lesser-known but high quality bands) to check into.

Anyhoo, onto music.

Hell yes, Close to the Edge. What a fantastic album and title track. 'Siberian Khatru' is still my favorite from that one, though. Something about those opening chords, and the whole pace of the song. Just strikes me.

I love the light-hearted nature of The Flower Kings' music. So upbeat and groovy, and you can't help but crack a grin when you listen.

Not a day goes by I don't think that I was born in the wrong era. I would have given most anything to see the Progressive Rock bands that I love during their heyday. What an incredible experience it must have been!

Thijs van Leer was definitely more than a little loopy. But I love that.

One of my favorite live albums. I have it on vinyl and on CD. Guess which one I love listening to more?

Vinyl of course. At least bands still play prog today. My dad been to lots of concerts in the 70s. The tickets were only 10 dollars he said. You were born were you were born and that is that. I do act like I have the mind of a 54 year old but I am only 14.

Egg is great. I dunno why I don't listen more. I have The Polite Force on my computer. There's nothing quite like the sound of heavily distorted organs to put you into a sort of slow groove.

You posted a Canterbury track, I should too.

I absolutely love prog!

Some of my favorites are Genesis, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Harmonium, The Moody Blues, King Crimson, Gentle Giant, Gong, The Soft Machine, Jethro Tull, Yes, The Alan Parson Project, Van Der Graaf Generator and Pink Floyd

I've been listening to Genesis A LOT lately. Selling England by the Pound is probably one of my favorite albums of all time.

And since we're talking about bands from the Canterbury scene, here's a track from The Soft Machine. I really love this track from their third album. Their first three albums are amazing. The other albums they made after this are instrumental only, which I don't like as much, but they're pretty good too.

It's funny how my favorite album by them is their 2nd as a whole, but I like the first album better for its songs individually. And this song, which is probably my favorite from them, is on their 3rd album :P

Also, let me introduce you to Harmoium, a band from where I live that was actually pretty popular in the 70's. I personally like it a lot. It's a bit softer than the prog rock I usually listen to. They could almost be classified as a progressive-folk-rock band if such a thing exists!

They sing in french (although this particular song here has no lyrics) and are often called the french-equivalent to Genesis! ;)

I love Harmonium. One of my favorite Canadian Progressive Rock bands, easily.

I have both the self-titled album and an original pressing of L'Heptade on CD. You might be able to imagine how hard it was for me to get my hands on THAT. I'm still looking for Si on Avait Besoin D'Une Cinquieme Saisons, but that one has been a bit on the pricey side so I've been hesitant to try and score it.

Say, you know Maneige?

On another note, one of my favorite Prog bands to release material in the last 20 years (and is still active) is probably Discipline. Hopefully at least one other individual is familiar.

Carl Palmer would like to have a word with you about that...

That being said, he's one of my favorite drummers.

Does this count?

It is indeed Opeth, but the new album sure isn't metal. Heritage is the album Mikael Åkerfeldt has been wanting to make since he was 19, and did he succeed? Yes, yes he did. He had a dream, and he executed it quite well. Another song from the new album that really impressed me was the intro track, Heritage.

Heritage was a great album. It's nice to see a band deviate from their normal sound once in awhile and do stuff like this. I bought the album first chance I got. Still have to give it a few more listens before I can form an educated opinion on it though.
