Why was Twilight researching genealogy anyway?

I'm curious as to why Twilight was researching genealogy in Pinkie Apple Pie.  I can see three possibilities:

• She wanted to see if she was related to Star Swirl the Bearded or some other famous unicorn.
• She felt she needed to know who was who in major pony families, seeing as she's a princess now.
• She was actually trying to fix damaged records and got wrapped up in the information.

What do you guys think?  I like to think she wanted to connect herself to Star Swirl.  Why wouldn't she?

Twilight wanted to research genealogy because, she wanted to know more about the family history of ponies that she was curious to know more about. Also, she wanted to learn more about the genealogy of ponies to see if she can put the pieces together on the history of the family of the princesses or just other ponies.

Twilight could very well believe that understanding the genealogy of the princesses could lead to a deeper understand of the Tree of Harmony. After all, that was what she was tasked to do so that she could learn more about the keys that would open the box they saw.

Twilight being the "egghead" that she is,  probably saw something about it in another book and just strayed with the thought. Then began to study genealogy as a result.

 

Its entirely in her character to just want to "know more" all the time

Well besides fro the plot of the episode, most likely she was researching genealogy because, that's what Twilight does. She just likes to research different thing. Sometimes there is meaning and sometimes there is not.

I'm going to go with the simple answer of "Twilight Sparkle loves knowledge." Of course, that doesn't mean it won't come in useful later on. She's like the Hermione Granger of MLP.

Dragons live a very long time, so in turn, it would take a while for the egg to hatch. And if Celestia counted the egg as an adopted child,twily could find out who originally acquired spikes egg, and from there spikes parents.
