I can see three possibilities: She wanted to see if she was related to Star Swirl the Bearded or some other famous unicorn. She felt she needed to know who was who in major pony families, seeing as she's a princess now. She was actually trying to fix damaged records and got wrapped up in the information. What do you guys think? I like to think she wanted to connect herself to Star Swirl. Also, she wanted to learn more about the genealogy of ponies to see if she can put the pieces together on the history of the family of the princesses or just other ponies. Then began to study genealogy as a result. Dragons live a very long time, so in turn, it would take a while for the egg to hatch. And if Celestia counted the egg as an adopted child,twily could find out who originally acquired spikes egg, and from there spikes parents. It's highly unlikely, but possible.
