Kurt Cobain's 46th birthday is fast approaching and 2 months away is the 20th anniversary of Cobain's suicide, so I figured I'd ask this question. Would there be any difference in pop music if Kurt hadn't pulled the trigger?

Nope. Music is as music does.
Even whilst alive, Kurt Cobain was one of those who shifted the constant stream of generations and music. Dead or alive, he had an impact that played it's part in making pop what it is today.
Music is never defined by a single artist. It's many, many artists, and hundred times more listeners that progress pop through the generations. Not everyone listened to Kurt, and not every aspect of music was controlled by him. Even though he was a damn good musician, he wasn't the only damn good musician. All of them, and those who decided that it was the type of music to listen to, set the way music grew.

Even if there was no Kurt Cobain at all, I have little doubt that music today would be very similar to the current world.
