Learning to draw ponies...

Probably gonna get into doing some pony art, so first things first got to learn how to draw the damn things :

Armed only with a rough model sheet from EQD I set about exploring the forms

This first image is my very first exploration into pony anatomy. It's very rough and I got the proportions very wrong..

Awwoogga, abandon pony and move on to the second attempt (taking with me the lessons learned)

Time for attempt two.

PONY2

Better. Proportions are better but some things are still a little off. The ear is a little odd and it's very flat ( like the poor filly has been pinned and pressed :o

No point going any further I think this one has taught me all it's going to.. NEXT!!!

Time for the next attempt.

Pony three:

There you go !. That's more like it ! Btw did I tell you I'm a quick study :)

On and just for giggles here is a random image from else where in my sketch book

not a bad start, but you need to find your own style. something that makes your drawings unique. Something that when others see it, they instantly know you drew it. I have no doubt in my mind that you can do this. But you know, just something to think about.

Indeed, but you need to understand the source material before you can extemporise.

No need to take it back. For the ponies (all three) I personally consider them all to be 'not a bad start' even the manga character is a pencil sketch. My finished works tend to be a LOT better

The attached image is a game level I was working on for the WWE: BRAWL game that got caned when THQ shut Blue Tongue down.

My god, that is some amazing work you have here. I must say, Im quite curious just how you do the shadows, they look extravagant.

All art is observation and practice. If you do a lot of observational sketching, or simply take the time to just look at the interaction of light on objects you will, slowly, come to understand how it works. Once you have built up a broad understanding of how this works you can then apply that to your creations. If you have a clear understanding of the forms of the item you are drawing, even if it is directly from your mind, and you know where the light is coming from then it all becomes self evident where the shadows and shading should go.

But if you are after a magic wand solution, I'm afraid there isn't one. It's a long process of observing and practicing form and light.

oh and, its worth mentioning that once you know the rules, you then will also know how to break them for effect/clarity

Pony #4.

Still progressing I think

But not 100% sure about defining the bottomlip

It tends to make the snout a bit too masculine. Love your stuff btw; is the girl inspired by Chronotrigger/some other Toriyama work?

Pony #6. Continuing the pony a day routine

Drawn digitally on the iPad. (ProCreate)

Traced the line work freehand (tracing is a valuable tool for learning the shapes of a style you wish to master.. It's only cheating if you then try and pass the Work off as 100% your own work) this time I used a reference image of Rarity found online.

Then coloured and added layers pion the iPad.
