animation Anime or Cartoon?

Gravelord Neat-O

Recommended Posts

okay, so i've seen a lot of people get pissed off by calling 'Anime' 'Cartoons'. i consider it cartoons, but i call it anime out of respect and also because i don't like to piss people off.(even though i may be doing so without even realizing it) so, what do you prefer to call it, Anime? or Cartoons?

I also want to read people's opinions so that i see everyone's point of view lol

The definitions of both varies greatly but it's generally accepted that the only actual difference is that anime is made in Japan. Because of it's origin and the cultural influences that come with it anime has a very distinct style to it but there really isn't anything that makes it different from a cartoon or any other animated piece.

There is an obvious distinction but it's a lot more subtle than some people realize. When someone says "anime" you KNOW they are talking about say...One Piece or Naruto because of that influence from Japanese culture that comes with it. It's very possible for anime to break out of that mold. Have you ever heard of Sherlock Hound? It's a pretty old anime but just by looking at it you might not even identify it as anime because it doesn't look or feel like your typical anime yet it still is one.

I've always called Japanese animation "Anime", Western/American/Canadian animation "Cartoons", and any other country's animation "(Insert country) animation", although I'm not entirely sure how I came to this conclusion. But it doesn't really bother me if people lump all animation under the term "Cartoon".

Animation is animation, who cares what it's called!? 8D

Did you know the show (another acceptable term, btw) Code Lyoko is actually a french animation? Yet it still seems to look quite a bit like an anime.

How about Totally Spies which is a VERY obvious anime-influenced French-Canadian cartoon? Avatar: The Last Airbender is American and has the same influenced style! Though it does seem to take more from China than Japan in it's setting. Don't kill me, I've only ever seen like three episodes ever.

You can find a lot of stuff like that where the similarities are close and all it really proves is that different things come from different places and there is no exact definition of what makes who with whyfors and nonsensical stuff like that.

I usually decide based on origin. Though most Japanese animation has similar styles and most American animation has similar styles, and so on, origin is just the default way of categorizing animation for me.

I call the Japanese stuff anime and pretty much everything else cartoons/animation.

There both cartoons, one is just animated in/for Japan. I have no idea why people get so uppity when people call anime cartoons

I think they just get uppity because some ppl like to distinguish and classify everything. Anime is just Japanese animation. Its just a different style of cartoon/animation.  It does look pretty though.

I think the styles are kind of melding together over the years. Look at the new loony toons compared to the old  ones.

The technicality that separates them is the artistic style they are drawn in. For example there is an obvious difference between Japanese Anime and lets say Tom & Jerry. You can have American Anime as long as it looks similar to Japanese Anime. Also Anime is usually based off of Manga (Comics sorta) and that's another thing that sets it apart from normal cartoons.

But yeah I'm kinda an Anime snob so no calling it a cartoon  :okiedokielokie:

Lol no worries, I'd still brohoof ya ;-)

I always call them anime:

I guess anime has that style of drawing not so common in Western cartoons which makes them different and there fore called anime.

Although, at the end of the day there both the same thing in my opinion which is:

A story being told, by a bunch of drawings going by really super fast to create the appearance of movement.

Indeed! The art direction was based off of Powerpuff Girls which is an American cartoon.

Ironically, there was also a Powerpuff Girls anime.

I just don't like how depressing and emo it is. It really makes my gears grind. Cartoon is much much more cheerful and entertaining in which it has better animation for example. MLP FiM is one of those cartoons and is one of the reasons I joined the fandom, it was either skinny Japanese gay boys or lovely female ponies. I think I'd prefer Ponies any day.

not all anime is depressing or sad, you just have to find the right show, either that or anime isn't for you. No one is going to try and force you to watch anime.

I mean I did remember watching Pokemon and Megaman, but thatwas about it. They were OK, probably because they were based on games and I love gaming (not really).

Words and phrases exist for a reason. Anime is a term loosely applied to animation of Japanese origin, specifically for a Japanese audience in mind. The word, 'cartoon' is an animation of some sort, possibly even live action as a genre, and applies to animations made primarily for childrenand are associated in the past with moralistic and/or didactic purposes, early children animation especially and also My Little Pony is around this concept literally. Going beyond the consumption of younger minds, animation in the west and in the US primarily has no placeholder name. I associate it with the phrase, 'western animation' but I also would not accept the word 'cartoon' to be applied anywhere near a generic western animation meant for a general audience contrasted with cartoons. The former doesn't carry the same connotative weight as the latter. For example, a domestic comedy compared to an educational subject matter. Cartoons are western animations though as a specific sub genre and also may exist in the east as long as the ties to children in a non-ironic sexual overture doesn't occur but I would guess that the term is seldom used due to its western association. It is literally inconceivable to casually mix the terms, 'anime' and 'cartoon' which represents style and purpose. It's like blindly joining the concepts of watercolor paintings and political tendency!

It depends on where you are. Anime is essentially the Japanese word for cartoon. If you're in Japan any cartoon is anime, but if your outside of it, the term is generally used to mean animation of Japanese origin.

Visual Novel. Who the hell watches the anime adaptation of anything?

Apparently me and large enough chunk of these forums that my blog post asking for anime recommendations got a shit-load of responses.

Anime. I like anime because they are either funny by being weird, or they are funny by being extremely serious.

I don't usually like regular cartoons because of the aim at children, you know, with all the fart and poop jokes. That's why I like only a handful of cartoons though. FIM is awesome because it is appealing without having jokes like that.

In addition, I love cartoons, so don't get me wrong. I just feel like since the 90s, the quality of cartoons has plummited... Severely. That's why I watch anime. When I was a kid, there used to be a ton of appealing cartoons on. I don't watch innapropriate anime though. I usually watch anime that is based on manga and video games. I swear, half the anime on netflix are the stereotypical pornographic stuff. I had such a hard time finding an anime that didn't open on a sex scene. Netflix needs to get a bigger library of anime to watch.
