I love the comics. In fact I prefer them to the TV show. I think they're canon but nobody else does!

I think that they are until they do something that contradicts the show. Then, that particular thing is not, but the rest is.

The authors are not very forthcoming in regards to that, as far as I know. "Oh, it is if you want it to be." was said of one of the books...

In the end, I guess it's up to the fandom to decide.

EDIT: You could place a poll about this.

For dumb, self-important fics about mythology, ponies and fascist griffons that can't figure friendship out.

And I'm just getting started.

I think the majority of the fandom doesn't consider as canon especially since that thing with the Daring Do writers.

"There is no such thing as innocence, only degrees of guilt."

"Prayer cleanses the soul, Pain cleanses the body."

"He who follows Chaos, shall suffer for eternity."

It does all the necessary filler that goes in between the show canon. Andy Price collaborates with the show writers, but only if it doesn't contradict or follow too closely to the show. This makes it seem it's more filler for Andy Price's headcanon instead of the 5-6 writers that actually work on the show.

The show doesn't depend on the comics on whether something is canon or not, but the comics depend on the show for canon material.

You can say the canon if you want to believe so. It's nice to have supplementary material, but or me (and many others), canon material comes from the TV show and not the comics due to contradicting material with the show.

It's basically canon until someone steals your waifu, apparently.

*pulls out lightsaber*

Whose stealing waifus? I'll end them if the even think about it!

In all seriousness though, I prefer the comics to the show and consider them canon. People also need to actually consider them before disregarding them! The create so much lore and world building for Equestria I actually feel like they were made specifically for Bronies! There are scenes in the comics definitely not for children, i.e. Chrysalis killing a cat in front of the CMC just for the sake of shock value.

Andy Price (the artist) said Hasbro told him that the comics are %100 percent canon until they state otherwise.

I've read them, and to be honest, I do not like the comics for two reasons. First of all, the Big Mac arc (Ugh). It felt forced and unnatural having every minor character appear in sequential order which was clearly fanservice. Granted, this is why there are these comics, which is to fill in the void that show canon material does not cover, but I don't think it's wrong not to consider the comics canon if that said fanservice and pop culture references detracts to the levels of being bothersome.

Also, like you mentioned, the cat death scene. There is no possible way the show will ever cover that. This will probably be considered canon in some minds, but the show's never going to ever confirm that. It just can't and there will always be those people who think it's canon and then force people to think that Chrysalis is a murderer. In the show, there's no way to confirm that. Sigh.

And that's what bothers me most. I just don't think you can take actions done in the comics as something the ponies will do in the show. I honestly think the main 6 is different in the comics than in the show.

Think of it like the Star Wars Expanded universe of games, comics, books. They make a much better story that expand upon the actual movies of Star Wars, and it's the movie's canon that most people are going to believe.

I used to consider them canon, until the inconsistencies became too much for me to ignore.

Now I feel kind of bad for Fleetfoot, since she was speaking normally before her accident with the Cutie Mark Crusader's fireworks and makes me wonder if her lisp in 'Rainbow Falls' was a result of the lasting brain damage, since we've seen in the Big Mac arc that she suffered a pretty bad concussion from it.

I agree with this sentiment as it feels like too often characters are dumbed down or flanderized for comedic effect or drama.

It's fine if you think that they are canon, you should know that not a lot of people will agree with you. The comic series is more of an alternate universe with different elements to the show, that's how I see it.

Exactly this, there certainly is a lot of good in the comics in regards to lore and story ideas but, I wouldn't go so far as to call them canon (at least not in the show's universe).

Sexy Big Mac does that to a pony.

No, my waifu always had the lisp. She does not have brain damage.

And I would call them canon, as they are an officially licensed product, and they remain canon until the show says otherwise, or they directly condritct the show.

Well, Andy Price says:

The comic is set within show continuity, and is done in cooperation with the show staff. This is as close to the show as it gets without having it animated.

So yeah.

@ Commissar Alexar oh for heavens' sake, THIS again? for god's sakes.....*sighs* okay, for (hopefully) the very last time, that was the Daring do award.  it's a prestigious literary award. (like the Edgar Allan Poe award or the William Allen White award.) Heck, Andy even SAID THIS on Twitter. okay, we clear? .....let's hope so. really the only inconsistency I've noticed is that shining armor's magic is blue instead of light rose like it should be, but eh, chalk it up to artistic license.

In my eyes, it's the same as with any other comic. E.g. there are many different universes in Marvel and DC comics, so there are many different Batmans, Spidermans, Flashes, etc. It's all a matter of perspective. The characters can be identical or the same, but the actual content of the comics does not, in any way, reflect that of the show. It's still canon, yes, but it's not the same canon as show stuff.

While I do consider the comics to be canon for the most part, some things don't seem to mesh all that well with the show. Because of that, I'll consider the comics to be fully canon unless I feel they contradict the show. In that case, I'll go with what the show says or what I feel would be a better interpretation.

For instance, the Nightmare Forces on the moon are out of the question for me. IMO, Nightmare Moon was trapped there in complete solitude, not together with strange fuzzy things. I don't care Fiendship is Magic states that she corrupted them rather than the other way around; I simply won't accept their existence. I also don't buy that they gave Nightmare Moon the power to walk in the dreams of ponies, since that was a part of Luna's job anyway.

On the same note, I don't really like the backstory of the Sirens either. The movie says they were a menace and were banished by Star Swirl the Bearded. Despite Sonata's cluelessness, they were portrayed as a smart, manipulative bunch in the movie. In the comics they seem far more comical than they should be. It's funny that between them and Star Swirl they invented 23 kinds of music, but I think it detracts from their fairly menacing backstory.

Overall, I think the comics sometimes take an approach that is too much focused on comedy, which damage the existing canon. This doesn't just happen in the Fiendship comics, either. The issue where a minotaur is building a theme park next to the Everfree Forest has this too. Celestia and Luna caught in the vines is funny, but it just doesn't mix with the show where Celestia was directly beaten only twice, by Chrysalis and the Smooze, and in the latter case that seemed to be more because she hates the Gala and wasn't really trying.

Having said all this, I did think Sombra and Tirek's backstories were done better because they were far less comedic than the others. Sombra's was actually a really sad story that makes for an interesting new take on a character who didn't get fleshed out all that well in the show proper, showing that the writers of the comics do know how to make a gripping story.
