game WIP Platform shooter game - the Phony Brony

I know what youre thinking, "he makes games?!"

 

Well this was made in Game maker. I know there are tons of GM haters, but I'm still learning Java so bear with me.

 

Here's a playable demo. I wont be able to compile to Unix (max / linux) because Game maker doesnt support them.

 

Im going to make this a zombie shooter game (think Bridle Gossip). I probably will only have Unicorns because i'm not sure how I would have them holding the guns otherwise. It would have been top down but Tinna Brown on these forums inspired me to make it a platformer. Hers (his?) is, with my current understanding, will be very different.

 

Also don't expect good graphics because I have no animations; every movement is done by rotating tons of limbs.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that this demo has no enemies :P

Edit 2: Update: Added space bar jumping. Empty Shells. Pony grahpics changed. Blood. There's an enemy but thats just a dummy right now.

Edit 3: Update: Added zombies. Added gun 2, you cant go back to gun 1 yet. Enemy death (not yet for player). Body parts.

Edit 4: Update: Added lighting. Background. Simple environment props. Smooth gun movement. Random gun accuracy. Simple HUD. Player Death.

Edit 5: Update: Added gun selection screen. (It costs nothing to change guns as of now, even though that gives you full ammo.) Kill counter at bottom left. Gun 3. Oh and the pistol's damage was increased a bit.

Edit 6: Update: Added blood splatter on the ground. Gun collision detection (You can't shoot through walls anymore)

Edit 7: Update: Changed lighting script (the effect is the same). Added lamps (scenery). Explosion. Colored smoke. Rocket launcher (gun4). Gun string names. Changed some gun constants

Edit 8: Update: Added gun5 (a shotgun). Shell delay after shot for all guns. Splash damage. Blowing off limbs. Bullet velocity(different from damage, used for body parts) Changed a few constants. Ambient noise.

Twilight looks rather cruddy in this.

Maybe you could use The pony creator for animations. I emphasize maybe since idk.

Haha not what i was expecting. I like it though. I think the movement actually looks rather nice. Also i love the sound effect for the gun and the kick on it. Having space bar as an alternative jump method may be helpful though. Couldn't figure it out at first.

Okay I'm using that now. The graphics might still be bad because I had to manually cut out each piece of the picture, but it should be less horrid.

This is such an odd concept, haha! It's interesting though, what would the storyline for it be? Also, I love Twilight's face in this, she seems so indifferent that she's shooting a gun :mellow:

Changed the bounding box. It may still be strange, but hopefully it's better :D

I could, but that would mean making a picture for each frame. That would be better but the animations would be less smooth. Well right now there aren't any animated sprites. Thanks though, i'll consider it.

Hm I tried making the body parts land on the ground, but it became really annoying. I guess I wont have that for now :P

I made a small update where you can select guns. See the top post.

 

On and I added a third gun. It's slightly over powered but whatever.

The way I set up the guns makes it incredibly easy to set up new guns. I'll have to make special cases for special guns (rocket launcher, shotgun w/ splash damage, etc)

Without having played yet, i also guess that the gun is a part of the Twilight sprite.

This makes the use of a bounding box an even worse choise .....

 

I tend to prefer "precise collision checking".

Ok, it may result in the odd situation of twi "standing on air", supported by either her tail or chin ....

But that might be preferable?

 

I found a way around that though, but i'm not sure how that way should look like for bigger sprites ...

 

I suggest you test it, at least.

 

Also, on Game Maker Community (there are links from Yoyo-games to it), i recently made a topic about it (my name there is "Catelf" ) in the Novice and intermediary part of their forum.

GMC requires a seperate registration from yoyo-games, it seems like, though ...

 

I downloaded your game-in-progress, and will probably try it out ... if i remember to :)

Argh bounding boxes... I hate them almost as much as grids.

 

Though the way I made the game forces me to use a static rectangle as a bounding box because there are no animations in the game; its all done by rotating limbs. (Edit: that means that the player is made up of multiple sprites that cannot work as one whole)The gun is not attached to the player sprite in any way. It doesnt effect wall collisions either... I should fix that.

But i looked at your GMC post and I see you solved it... probably the same way I would. I could change the bounding box shape, but I'll have to do some testing to implement it to my current movement system.

I made another small update. I'm going through the process of making the game as gory as possible and need suggestions...

 

I just added blood splatter and did a little with gun aiming. Check the first post for the update.

Another slightly larger update.

I know you'll be happy with the new rocket launcher! Everypony's favorite! Except be careful because you might blow yourself up.

Still thinking of how to make the game more gory. Any suggestions? No? Okay.

How gory? some gross, even?

Blasting of pieces of decayed flesh?

Blasting off the head, but the rest of the body continues?

 

YES EXACTLY. Wow I can't believe I didn't think of that! (a cupcake eating cutie mark, it's so obvious)

 

I'm gonna make it so it's a random chance of a limb falling off, or head, (or maybe tail too? that isnt someting that gets blown off though) Which shouldn't be too hard as I'm drawing each one onto the screen separately anyway.

I'll get back to you guys later, I got stuff to do.

Okay I added another update.

 

Theres a shotgun now! Also a few more lower level updates with no immediate effects currently. (they just make it easier for me to customize guns later, such as more splash damage or delayed shell clip guns). After all there is one script that I use that houses all the constants for ever gun; all I need to do to add a gun is to edit the script and create more sprites/sounds.

 

But I'll probably stop working on this till I get more recent feedback. So check the top post.
