The comics are canon, deal with it!

It's generally only when Katie Cook and Andy Price are doing it that they really go nuts with the references. So if you can avoid them, you won't get the pop culture inundation so much.

Those two are actually very good, it's just the references are a problem with them.

On a side note, I HIGHLY recommend the chapter books by GM Berrow. Except for a little bit of weird pacing in the first book, her stuff has been very good and sticks close to the feel and tone of the show.

Ya, I haven't read the comics myself, but from what I've heard, they're very heavy on the references, which is a massive turn off to me. To me, pop culture refs aren't inherently bad, but they should be done without dominating the plot and with a thing called "subtly", so as not to break immersion. I remember a reference to Gollum from lord of the rings in a completely unrelated fantasy novel that actually managed to work within the context of the setting, even tho it was a blatant reference to that other series for anyone who knew about it.

I'm guessing the MLP comics either lack that subtly and or cram the plot with too many of them to the point where they become a serious distraction.

@the OP, the person you quoted said it's part of the continuity of the show (which would make it canon) but than, in the very same paragraph, turns around and says it's up to interpretation....wut.

The Cook and Price books are reference heavy, but the references are kept in the background with no real effect on the actual plot of the books. The bookworm arc is also full of them, but since they're chasing it through the actual books themselves, references are to be expected in a plot like that.

The only book which uses references to the point of ruining the book is the RD micro. Every fan of the comics will tell you that it's a terrible comic and it's best to just pretend it doesn't exist.

Comics have their own cannon. In comicverse, Twilight's mom writes the Daring Do books. In showverse, Daring writes them herself. As much as we want it to be, the comics and show are separate entities.

I see this myth posted quite a bit, but Price said the award is named after the Daring Do series. It's not an award for writing the actual books.

Out of curiosity, which issue did that award appear in?

That's awesome! I really love the comics. The artwork is beautiful! Sunset Shimmer also got some well needed backstory in them.

I would definitely consider it canon for the sake of having more development, but not to the point where it overules the show's canon.

Before the beginning of the "Reflections" arc I would have believed they were canon.

But, there's just too much out of character behavior for Princess Celestiafor me to be able to believe that any longer with her willing to ditch Luna and her issues, abuse the magic and trust of Starswirl, as well as the rest of Equestria because she's 'in love' with someone from an alternate world.

So now, even if it's confirmed as canon-I'll have extreme difficulty believing it as well as having much less respect for the character for being so irresponsible.

Celestia

for me to be able to believe that any longer.

Is it really such a stretch to imagine Celestia falling in love with Sombra?

Issue #11. There are two plaques on the wall with writing on them. Since one has "Author of the Year" and the other has "Daring Do" written on it, a lot of people assumed it was an award for writing the book series, but Andy Price (the artist for that issue) said that it's a separate award named after the Daring Do series.

There is another concept that Celestia is just really strong in her convictions towards helping that other world. Starswirl tries to make her stop interfering in the affairs of the other world, but she just can't let it go.

Ok, I will when I get a chance. :) Also, I forgot about the Celestia Micro-Series comic though, I like that one too.

yeah, badass old lady inkwell is cool. on a side note, I didn't noticed the Harry Potter parodies until I saw Snape, I thought the Malfoys were just random Canterlot snobs at first

If I recall correctly, the plan is for the comics to *neither* cross over nor contradict the show.  They're planning to try and keep them separate without explicitly making them into separate universes.  Hence that whole "it's canon if you want it to be" deal.

As far as I'm concerned if it doesn't appear in an episode I may consider it, but I don't really dwell on it. For example, I accept what Twilight and the Crystal Heart Spell says about Cadence's backstory, but we've never seen it on the show. Since I've not read the comics they don't impact me and unless the show uses their ideas they never will.

How is it canon if both the show and comics run on a separate storyline? When and how did it take place after the TV series? Why haven't the girls ever brought up the second arrival of Chrysalis or the Nightmare or mentioned anything about the creatures that inhabit the moon? Both appear to rarely correlate with one another at all.

Its just convenient to keep them stacked neatly away from one another to prevent these confusing questions.

Uh, except that the comics and show are two separate timelines, as stated by the staff.

Don't get me wrong.  I wouldn't mind them being canon.  But I'm pretty sure the people making the show know what's canon with it and what's not.
