My french language teacher (I hated her, and I think she hated me) was talking about an upcoming test, and she told us what the test was on, what we had to write about, etc. She told us to draw a 'bubble diagram' to help us figure out the points and also help us to revise, but I have always found that I can't revise well with bubble diagrams; they just don't work for me. So I asked her whether I could make a bullet point list (my favourite way of revision) but she said that "You have to revise MY WAYYYY!" (No really she proper shouted at me). I said I was still going to do a bullet point list, and she said that "I won't get any answers right doing that." (Her ACTUAL words.) I'd just watched this episode of MLP so I thought it was funny that I'm using it's lesson almost straight after watching it :D

So I did the test and got full marks. (Ok, I was a bit very smug about it) I then tried telling her how different people have different revision techniques, but she just ignored me and said "You got lucky." I mean, can you even say that!?!? I was a bit angry with her but I'm getting used to this kind of stuff, (she does it ALL the time).

Just showing how I used MLP's lessons in a real life situation ^^  :yay:

I absolutely loved this one.  We've had a streak of excellent episodes for awhile, here.  I love episodes that explore a different aspect to a character than what we're used to seeing.  We know that Rainbow is athletic.  This episode delves more into how her mind works, which makes her deeper and more dynamic.  That's what this show does so well.

It was obviously a bit far fetched that Rainbow would go the entire duration of that flight and never once consciously notice that the whole town is acting out the history of the Wonderbolts, but eh, that's ok.  I really loved that scene, and I found it all very touching for some reason.  I particularly liked seeing Rainbow so down on herself during that flight.  That's sounds weird.  Let me try to explain.  I like to see vunarability in characters, provided that they do not act too out of character without good reason, and also provided that it's all resolved in the end.  (This is the kind of show where we want happy endings.)  Given those parameters, vulnerability just makes the characters ever deeper and more real.  Hearing her talk about how her dream was crushed was so sad, and felt very genuine to me.  It hit close to home, too.  And her realization that she is smart, and just needed a different way to learn, was priceless.  To top it off, the cinematography during that climax flight was really top notch.

And of course, Twilight's whole nerdy lecture scene was an absolute :squee::wub: moment.

And, best of all, we get Testing 1, 2, 3 in 5 seconds!

Ok I'm sorry but I've seriously got to say this. Why do people love Rainbow Dash so much? Especially in THIS episode...All Twilight wanted to do was help her...But Rainbow Dash arrogantly shunned her help and was a total prick to her...

That literally only happened for one minute(did one freaking minute really set people off?)...and it was out of frustration...and she apologized for it afterwards...

And besides the point of the episode was more about finding a study method that would help her on the test, and Twilight's method didn't work at all and they were all trying to find a suitable study habit that was suited for the episode, and she only began to shun everyone when they couldn't find one and she grew even more doubtful of her ability to learn

Rainbow Dash: Enough! No rapping, no cards, no costumes, no play, and no apples! I am never gonna pass this test, ever! Just forget it!

post-8039-0-37472200-1423941543_thumb.png

Rainbow Dash: It's okay. You were just trying to help. It's just too bad I'm too dumb to learn anything.

Plenty of people can relate to getting down on themselves and thinking they aren't smart simply because they haven't found a style of learning that works well for them, personally. Some people learn well in classroom lectures, some people learn well in solitary time with a textbook, and some people favor a more hands on style where they can engage with the material more directly. Everyone works differently, but some people end up feeling like garbage because their test scores, their peers, their selves, and sometimes even their instructors are telling them that they are inferior to their classmates, when they may just need to approach things from a different angle. Even Rainbow Dash, one of the most talented people around, isn't immune from something like this, and some can see themselves in her.

As for any rudeness, it was understandable, short, and apologized for.

Watching this again I couldn't help but wonder how everypony knew the history of the Wonderbolts so well. I understand why Twilight knew, but did she seriously have time to teach it to everypony else before they had their shot, or did they just know beforehand? I love the episode, but this is something I seriously wonder about.

Disclaimer: If the answer is somewhere in this thread I am a moron, but I didn't feel like reading through 19 pages first.

Why is that so surprising? They must have learned it at school just like you learned the history of your country, no?

Well, it's just that Rainbow Dash absolutely idolizes these guys. She, of all ponies, should know their history. Besides, while I'm sure the formation of the EUP is something that would be common knowledge, knowing what Celestia's favorite move is is something that you'd only be required to know as a Wonderbolt, or perhaps as random trivia.

This test is on the Wonderbolts specifically and I'm assuming that, since it's required to join the Wonderbolts Reserves, it goes beyond the regular curriculum in Equestria. If that is the case, it makes no sense for other ponies to know their history.

Comparing this to real life, I know absolutely nothing about the history of any military branch in my country, nor were we ever expected to learn. All I know from my own history is rather general stuff.

Oh, you're right.

Well either it is in the regular curriculum, and then it's just a verification: they make sure the ponies applying still know their history.

Or Twilight quickly explained to everypony what to do (as you said)... :/

It's very possible to be extremely devoted to one thing and not know its history. Brony analyst Tommy Oliver used a very personal example, acknowledging himself as a very huge fan of a band called Opeth. However, despite being a fan for more than a decade, he's only focused on the music. He can't tell you its history, because he doesn't research it nor is he invested in attempting to.

There are also millions of fans of both sports teams and the sports themselves who don't know their history, too. For example, I'm a fan of baseball and strive to research the DYKs. However, I'm also a tennis fan, but I know little of its history beyond what I read and heard.

Rainbow Dash explicitly stated to be a fan of the Wonderbolts several times, but there's no prior canonicity of how much she knows about their past.

That is true, and I'll admit that for bands and sports teams and the like this goes for me as well. However, if my life's dream was to join one of these bands or teams, and I knew that knowing their history was required, I'd make sure to learn it, especially since everypony else seemed to know about their history.

If it's part of regular curriculum (which seems most likely, given that all he others knew it well enough to provide their own methods of learning on extremely short notice) she should have picked up at least something from class, even if she was the class clown.

Can't exactly pick it up when one of the bullies in Sonic Rainboom reminded her of her expulsion from a flight school in Sonic Rainboom.

Also, as it's been shown throughout TT123, the methods that don't fit her needs don't help her one bit. Even if there's WB history, it'd still be in one ear and out the other.

I know she'd been expelled from flight school, but I'm not entirely certain flight school doubles as a regular school. Nevertheless, I agree with you that methods that don't suit Rainbow's style will not work at all on her so that could easily explain her difficulty learning.

Rainbow Dash denies that she got kicked out of flight school, remember! We don't know the details about that.

And if you ask me, it would make a spectacular episode. Dash finds out she can't possibly become a wonderbolt if she hasn't graduated flight school (a much better excuse for her not being able to join than what we've been given) and has to go back. Not only would it show us a lot more about Dash herself, but it would be able to show what really happened between Dash and her flight school all those years ago. Why would the bullies think she got kicked out and yet Dash denies it? Chances are neither of them is lying, and the truth is much more interesting than that.

Buuuuuut I'm pretty convinced the writers forgot about that rather important character bit, and she'll be a Wonderbolt before they even remember she never graduated flight school.

When she said it, I took it as her replying back for the sake of argument.

Like when a person gets dumped by their girlfriend, and passively aggressively says "I didn't get dumped, it was a mutual seperation..."

The bullies then said that flight school had too many rules and not enough nap times for Dash, implying she got kicked out for skipping too many classes.

But I can see where you're coming from. There is most certainly room to expand on what happened at flight school.

One of my favorite scenes of season 4 came from this. When Twilight was trying to teach Rainbow about the Wonderbolts and RD started rocking back and forth on the chair? Best thing ever.. probably because I would totally do that. Honestly though I really related to this one. It is hard for me to learn stuff the "traditional way."
