movies/tv Best Magical Girl anime in your opinion?

I have finally decided to delve into the mad realm of the otaku So, I decided to start with Magical Girl anime, since I'm a Moonie. What other Magical Girl anime would I like, that's similar to Sailor Moon? Or perhaps, adds new things to the Magical Girl genre? I was thinking Wedding Peach, but I know there are many others.

Ironic how the deconstruction of magical girls ends up being the best I've seen.

 

Music = Great

Animation = TV (okay), DVDs (Stellar)

Story = Mindblowingly Great

Characters = One of the most detailed development of characters of ANY show, and that's saying something.

Gonna go with the popular opinion so far and say PMMM. I'm a sucker for things that are dark and psychologically macabre in tone.

To be honest I'm surprised there's no Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha (S1 and S2, don't watch S3 LMAO), which is probably the "Mature" magical girl anime before PMMM.

 

And no credit to Sailor Moon? All other magical girl animes are derivatives of it. I do like PMMM the most, but I'm not going to forget these ones too.

I happen to enjoy Madoka Magica and Sailor moon.

Shugo Chara might also qualify as a 'Magical Girl' anime, too.

Thanks. Also, what is everypony's opinion on Mermaid Melody? Is it as good as the others that were mentioned? I watched some clips and I'm intrigued.

Shugo Chara is really the only one I can think of that might qualify that has not already been slammed into this thread.

 

And I have no idea about Mermaid Melody.

The Puella Magi Madoka one, I just started it today and it's the first one i've watched and OH MY GOD IT'S AMAZING! It's all happy but then suddenly out of nowhere BAM it goes to hell! Love shows like that!

I've never seen a Magical girl anime before.

 

However, I own all 3 Manga volumes of "Puella Magi Magica Madoka."

 

It was pretty good. I don't get why it's so popular though. I haven't seen the anime so I suppose I can't really say this, but it seems as though Puella Maga is overrated.

 

I'll watch the anime this week on Netflix. 

 

My thoughts on the Manga. (Which I just found out is based on the anime, so I should enjoy it.)

 

 

 

 

It was decent. For a while I didn't really get what was going on. I was also surprised at all of the death. I thought it was somewhat interesting that Kyubi was doing what he/she was doing for the good of the universe. Madoka's wish to have no more witches, what does this do to the universe? Also, that one girl who kept doing the timeline over, and over again to save Madoka. I thought that was an interesting plot twist. I didn't think that girl would be an important character, but it turns out in the end she was almost as important as Madoka herself.
