How powerful is Cadance, exactly?

yes cadence is an alicorn, but how powerful of an alicorn is she? it's obvious she's not as powerful as her aunts, or even her sister-in-law.

Cadance is far scarier than Celestia.  She can use her full power while if Celestia were to call down a solar flare, it would kill far too many ponies for it to be useful to her.

 

Cadance can make you fall in love with a signpost.  The want-it-need-it spell that Twilight cast?  Cadance can do much stronger mind magics as they are her domain.

 

You want a potentially scary pony... it is Cadance.  If she ever went nightmare...

While she may not be as strongly attuned to magic as her sister in law, nor as experienced and long lived to know and master such spells as Luna and Celestia, but she seems to have a very strong grasp in mind control spells with her love magic and can potentially defeat a foe by forcing them to fall in love with a rock or a dangerous object if she wanted too and kill them while they're distracted.

 

As silvadel said, she can be a potentially scary foe if a person doesn't have resistance to mind control spells.

Celestia couldn't defeat Chrysalis but Cadance (and Shining Armor) blasted Chrysalis and all the changelings away and restored Canterlot.

Also note that Chrysalis fed from Cadance's love for Shining Armor, and that is why Chrysalis was powerful enough to even defeat Celestia.

 

Love is a powerful thing, and since Cadance is the princess of love, I actually think she might be the most powerful princess.

Considering the basis of Equestria in emotional harmony, Cadence's love magic is probably really useful and potent. In all it's appearances so far it's been quite potent.

She's weak as shit. Chrysalis, who without love is a weakling, was able to presumably subdue her off screen. She only held off Sombra because he was weak to her magic and still not at his full strength. Even then, he was able to take her down after a few tries. 

 

She had a pathetic performance against the Tatzlworm, requiring three magic bolts to do what Twilight did with one.

 

Cadence is maybe high tier unicorn, but if she is, she's certainly a step or two below Twilight or Celestia. 

 

My personal preference is having her be about 30% as strong as Twilight. On that scale

 

Twilight: 100

Cadence: 30

Celestia: 100(Deal with it, I have them near equals because Celestia has shown nothing to put her above her and students usually surpass the master in fantasy)

Luna: 95

Chrysalis: 50

Chrysalis(Beefed Up): 115

Sombra: 85

Sombra(Shadow Form): 30

Nope, his shadows were surrounding it, it was pretty clear that he was doing something. If he weren't, why would Cadence not just take a break for a second?

It was Shining Armor's shield that blew them back(notice how Cadence says my love will give you strength), it was just replenished by Cadence

 

And love only held off Sombra because it was literally his weakness and unlike Shining Armor, who while being drained kept up a respectable shield for a long time, Cadence was down and out fairly quickly

Size doesn't matter(HA!). If anything, a shield is stronger when smaller due to being more concentrated. The main point is that Celestia knows Shining Armor and Cadence well, if Cadence could create a shield, Celestia would have asked her to in Canterlot Wedding(it was Chrysalis, but you get the point).

 

Notice how Shining Armor says the only reason he isn't protecting the empire is because his own magic is countered by Sombra, whereas Cadence's repels him due to love and light.

As you said, Cadance was weakened by Chrysalis magic, whereas Twilight was extremely angry when she destroyed the wall.
