So, about 2-10 mins ago I was watching the news on the telly and there was a segment about how Russia has announced that in 2030 they are going to colonise the moon with Cosmonauts. 
Yes, you heard right, Russia wants the moon.

The last space race saw the sciences advance at an unprecedented rate. Given the competitiveness between Russia and America, you can almost guarantee the US will start flinging money at NASA should Russia look like they're actually sincere in their intentions to follow through with this statement. Science advances, humanity advances... Who knows, we may even be able to recapture a little bit of that hope and wonder we had in such enormous quantities during the 60's. Heaven knows, this world could do with a lot of both. We're drowning in our own cynicism right now.

 

If we can achieve this without the shadow of a Cold War this time, all the better.

You have a point. Technology seems to develop its fastest when its in spite of someone else.

 All I ever wanted was to watch humanity expand and colonize distant stars. To see that technology to take a huge step in development would make me happy.
With the current belief that the human lifespan will be expanded by a 1000 years within the next 25-50 years. I may see my stupid dream come true yet.

The Americans already got there in the 60's and if Russia wants the Moon?  They can try.   Yet, it is surprising b/c this issue is not new........they've been trying to do this, b/c when we landed on the Moon, they got pissed.

Russia is getting weirder every time I hear something new about them.

That was a great Olympics only a few people got hurt from our scrappy job at building the stadium but our image is better than ever. Hmmm with all this free time let's go invade someone and make wild claims about.taking over the moon that can only better the image go Putin your on a roll.

I have a feeling if Russia went to the moon and claimed it as their own, a couple other countries will get jealous and be like "I wants a moon too" and a big fight could result from it.

 

Of course, if Russia wants the moon they can go right ahead and have it, as long as they don't use it to somehow fire nuclear weapons

I don't think anyone can 'own' the Moon. I believe that all nations that had space programs signed a treaty to that respect, but I don't know if Russia or China did.

Apparently, it is true. I remember awhile back seeing a Discovery Special on a con artist a guy who runs a fake company real estate agency for scamming people out of their money buying plots of land on the moon for later colonization. How they plan to redeem this land or what gives him the right to do this I have no idea.

 

On to the topic at hand, I'm pretty sure Russia's a bit behind on the curve here. They want to put people on the moon, America wants to send people to mars. Tell which is the better achievement here.

I really hope they try to colonize the moon and maybe planets. A space race would be good for the world.

 

Plus living on another planet, even if it means being a Russian citizen, would be awesome.
