PS3 RPG recommendations?

Revy ~ Two Hands

So I recently sold my 360 to help pay for a ps3 slim and as such I'm getting some ps3 exclusives: unchartered, Metal Gear Solid 4, Heavy Rain, Beyond Two souls, The last of us etc.

Anyway I also want to get some RPG's but only the best (I've played or know about all the 'WRPG' so recommend me the JRPG). Before anyone says I know the tag JRPG is meaningless but I can't be bothered to say

Role playing game developed in Japan, that may or may not have game mechanics representitive of those released elsewhere, I also can not be bothered to seperate RPG's by sub-genre as we would be here all day.

So with that in mind what would you recommend me a PS3 RPG? include anything available in the PSN store of any generation. If possible bear in mind my over-elabourate preferences:

  1. combat system is not overly complex, doesn't have to be n00bish but I like to zone out and do a lot of casual grinding in rpg's.
  2. Game stands on it's own, I don't need to have played magic sword fun time 1-4 to understand #5.
  3. No Strategy RPG's. Turn-based is fine but I can't stand some shitty tile based movement system no matter how well regarded.
  4. An extension of point 3: Action RPG preferred, anything where combat feels more dynamic than moving chess pieces.
  5. I love grinding, gaining levels is why I play JRPG's but no high ecounter rate, I can't attest to having 50,000 battles just to get the other end of the map.
  6. Game mechanics in general are inuitive. Again I'm not a n00b, but I'm not going to study 15 tutorials in order to learn how to do win a battle.

You can ignore some or all of the preferences if you like, I'm happy with TL:DR lists because I do come back and read them and research each game individually..and in extreme detail anyway. Thanks in advance ponies, I know I'm hard to please but I assure you Gamer Twilight is worth it. :derp:

Skyrim sounds perfect for what you're looking for, I think you'll find tons of enjoyment and replay value in it.

Also, if you're more into guns, there's always Fallout 3 & Fallout: New Vegas.

But I would recommend Skyrim first. ^^ (\

Well it depends on what kind of storyline you're looking for in a RPG. Besides I play games like Disgaea for the hilarious storyline and Prinny abuse. Anyhoof I would recommend Dragon Age Origins, Dragon Age 2, Kingdom Hearts 1.5 HD, Dragon's Dogma, and Final Fantasy X and X2 HD.

Feel free to add me on steam if you want to play something. Also don't be afraid to message and talk to me. I've had bad luck when I start a conversation, so I more then likely won't start one.

1. Tales of Xillia: 2 possible playable characters with very interesting stories, simple and responsive battle system with a compelling story.

2. Tales Of Graces F: Much darker than most entries in the series in my opinion, battle system is similar to Xillia with a few differences.

3. Final Fantasy XIII series: A worthy entry in a great series

4. Kingdom Hearts 1.5 HD: Nice remake of the original Kingdom Hearts

5. Eternal Sonata: Great soundtrack, interesting dream world take in the mind of classical composer Frederic Chopin.

6. Tales of Symphonia Chornicles: two great games in one, one of them regarded by many as the best in the series.

7. Ni No Kuni Wrath of The White Witch: If you a fan of Miyazaki movies than you will probably love this game as the same stupid responsible for them took part in making this game.

inb4 Final Hallway XIII.

Final Hallway XIII ain't all that bad a suggestion if you can withstand the monotonous linearity of it, good storyline and fairly simple mechanics to boot.

Lol.

I played Final Hallway XIII-2.

I boredom-quit in like an hour. It's like a rage quit but without a game that actually inspires any response because it gives you any feels.

lol, that is pretty much my experiance with Final Fantasy 8...after two hours.

And didn't you know, that Final Hallway XIII was made to kill us all? And it plays itself?

Lol I find all the FF games to be over-rated from what I've played of them. I heard FF XIII was worse than FF XIII-2?

I can not even imagine that. If I had to review that game I would literally get drunk to do so because FF XIII-2 is so fucking bad I actually recall it despite playing for one hour. To this day It haunts. :derp:

Boy do I have the game for you! Wild Arms 2 on PS1. It's available on PSN for $5.99!

There are few tutorial boxes at all and they don't do anything stupid like telling you to do it until you get it right. They tell you what something is and/or how to use it and you're done.

The game isn't overly hard, especially if you're GOOD at RPGs, but grinding is welcome and near the end of the game practically required if you want to do all the optional stuff (which there is a decent amount of)

The encounter rate is very good and the game makes it very easy to avoid battle if you so wish as well. Before you enter a battle an exclamation mark will appear above your head. You can choose to press the circle button to avoid the battle entirely without interrupting what you're doing at that very moment. Sometimes you are forced into battle but this is somewhat rare except certain areas where it seems almost like a sure thing.

The ability and battle systems are simple but are also easy to abuse for maximum potential if you want to.

The setting is somewhat unique as far as RPGs go as well: A little wild west, a little sci-fi and a dash of demonic summoning.

And you don't need to play Wild Arms 1 to understand it at all as they are not connected. I would actually recommend not playing the first one as it is easily the worst in the series. Far too many people try to play the games in order and give up after the first game which can be quite dull. The second game is an absolute improvement on everything in the first game and has a much larger scope to boot.

I like FF, but 8 just bored the hell out of me. Two hours, and I kept questioning where the plot was, and why did they do Cloud and Sephiroth v2.0...

As for 13, never played any past 9, but after seeing Jontron's videos calling it Final Hallway, I had a feeling it was absolute shit.

Alright sir that is going on my official list. And not just my to 'look at later list' or list of PS rpg's I mean my to play list. If you knew how many hours I've spent over the years making these lists you'd understand that is a bigger deal as it gets.

If I remember I shall say: this fellow discordian on a my little pony forum recommended I play this, and I was like: yeah okay then I'll add it to my main list of games to play.

Epic times. :)

Naw, not sayin' it's bad by itself. Just compared to the rest of the series. It's like...good as a standard for what an RPG should be, it's good as the start of the WA series even, but the rest of the games just blow it away. I try to urge people to play more than one WA before judging the rest of the series. If you don't like one, you can always play another.

---

Although I admit to holding a slight grudge against the first game for turning so many people away from the later entries in the series.

For Playstation...I would probably say anything in the Souls series from Demon's Souls to Dark Souls 2. I'm in a  weird spot to recommend JRPGs for the PS3 because most of those I own are on my Nintendo systems or heck...even my PC.

Don't know your feelings on them but the games aren't difficult in a fighting sense but in the sense of you are treated like an adult and everything is subtle. You need to learn on your own but most of the basic mechanics are very easy to figure out.

You want JRPG? I HAVE YOUR JRPG, NI NO KUNI: WRATH OF THE WHITE WITCH, BUY IT,  IT AWESOME  . Hard to come by any JRPG that has a world so colorful and vivid as that these days. I might also recommend Valkyria Chronicles, but it's more strategy than RPG

Well There's a couple of games I may recommend

Final Fantasy XIII and XIII-2 - probably recommended by players that played final fantasy series, but if you wanna play the game. go ahead and be my guest. I've only played Final Fantasy XIII since playing as lightning in dissidia 012 made me play the game.

Final Fantasy X and X-2 HD remastered - If you haven't played these games on the PS2 before, then you should be able to get these games. I've only played FFX, but never beat the game with my own data since I lacked strength and HP

and 3D dot game heroes - If you played Legend of Zelda before, then you will like this game. There are many references in this game so you'll encounter as you play through the game. It may be an RPG, but there's also tower defense mini-game which is a strategy and I know that's not the type of mini-game you will play though.

I like how half the people in this topic came in, didn't bother to read Gamer Twi's requirements or the fact that she's played all the big WRPGs of the generation, and suggested all the games she's already played.

Also, Twi, whenever you do end up playing WA2 be sure to give me a heads up on what you think of it. It's okay if you don't absolutely adore it like I do. I can deal with opposing opinions...totally. :okiedokielokie:
