A good friend of mine has recommended it and I'll be watching it this weekend. Or the next. I need to get myself organized. Looks quite interesting, from what little I've seen. I anticipate bird waifu.

2001: A Space Odyssey has no substance? BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHH 2001 is probably the most intelligent movie ever made. It's got a lot to say, it just says it using methods a casual viewer might find unfamiliar. Typical movie conventions like the "protagonist" and "three-act structure" are largely abandoned, with the film instead linking scenes together through visual/thematic parallels. Don't think of it as prose, think of it as poetry. Don't just passively look at crazy apes and floating spaceships, instead think about what those images mean when put together. For the record, I happen to think it's a blast to watch. And just to stay on topic... Birdman is rather overrated. Lots of critics are putting it on their best-of-year lists and it appears to be one of the frontrunners for a Best Picture nomination. I found it rather shallow and self-congratulatory underneath all the gimmicky visual pyrotechnics.

FLCL is one of my few 10/10 shows. A beautiful, delirious celebration of everything that makes the medium of animation unique. The show's visual invention and anarchic disregard for conventional narrative made it one of the freshest and most exciting experiences I've had with a piece of media in a good long while. Love it to bits. It also features Neon Genesis Evangelion director Hideaki Anno playing a minor role as an overweight cat. The show would have been a masterpiece in my eyes just for that.

No sure if "define" is really the right word, but the art we choose to consume can certainly be revealing. I listen to anything from Igor Stravinsky to Radiohead to bouncy J-pop tunes, all covering a wide variety of tones. I could take that to mean that I'm simply a multifaceted person, but really, we all are. Some are just more open to exploring those facets than others.

I could rattle off titles forever, but for the sake of convenience I'll restrain myself. In recent years: -Iron Man -Toy Story 3 -The Avengers -Frozen -Guardians of the Galaxy And going a little further back, and possibly into the realm of obscurity: -Akira -Aliens -The Empire Strikes Back -Vertigo -Casablanca -City Lights -The Passion of Joan of Arc Some of those up there I actually like, such as Frozen, Empire, Passion and to a lesser extent Vertigo, but suffice it to say I don't understand the adulation they receive in some circles.

I do think you should be more careful when deploying the word "we." Plenty of people cared. I certainly did, because I could relate to the mental illness being depicted.

And here we come upon an irreconcilable difference between us. Redeeming qualities are nice, but there isn't any rule that says that a protagonist absolutely must have them. All I ask is that they're interesting to watch. I don't need them to be my friends and I don't want to live vicariously through them. Fair enough if you think differently, though.

Eh. "Worst character of all time" implies the character is shallow or poorly written. I don't think Shinji is either. But we're crossing over into the realm of subjectivity here and there is no way out. And if you're disgusted by what Shinji did, then yes, that's the point. The scene was actually conceived as a criticism against otaku and their tendency to objectify female characters, or so the saying goes. If you reacted the way the director intended, is it really a failure?

Admittedly, I haven't seen JO's review in a long while, but her reservations had more to do with the show's philosophy than anything else (she read it as being too solipsistic, if I recall correctly). Since Eva is so open ended, I find it hard to flat out say she's wrong. I simply have a different reading on it. I still must insist that Bennett says little of value. Saying Shinji is unlikable in the movie and pointing to that as a flaw holds little water for me, since he's not supposed to be likable. Indeed, a lot of the things Bennett criticizes are things I consider strengths.

*shrugs* We must have wildly conflicting views on what constitutes a masterpiece, then. Eva excels in every area I value in media. It doesn't in yours. I suppose we'll never agree. By the way, those Bennett the Sage reviews you posted up there, in my humble opinion, fail as criticism since they say nothing insightful and repeatedly fail to judge the work on its own terms. He proves how puerile his opinion is when he rambles at length about how Asuka isn't a "badass," as if that means anything. Still entertaining enough, I suppose. Mind you, I have seen respectable negative criticisms of the show (from the likes of JesuOtaku). Bennett's just isn't one of them.

Big fan here. It's not much of an exaggeration to say that this show saved my life. I came to it at a time when I was lost in a fog of self-loathing, thinking it would be a nice piece of escapist fare that would help me forget the hell I was living in. Imagine my surprise when the show turned a mirror on me - confronting me with everything I was trying to run away from. Then it berated me. Then it strangled me. Then it told me that everything was going to be okay. To this day I consider it the artistic pinnacle of anime as a whole. The direction and editing is immaculate throughout, the writing is nuanced, the ending takes some of the most daring narrative leaps this side of 2001: A Space Odyssey, and the package as a whole is unbelievably rich and dense with meaning (even if you remove the Christian imagery). I've studied the thing for about a year and I'm still in awe. Masterpiece. I can't wait for that Blu-Ray. ALSO: Shinji is braver than you are.

He's probably gotten death threats for 3.0, considering the largely negative reaction that film drew. Anime fans can be a prickly bunch, after all. I doubt it fazes him though. He probably hasn't cared since 1997.

Sounds quite likely. But I hope it goes weirder. What I love about it is that it could conceivably go anywhere. I've joked around with a friend that it would end with Shinji competing with Ramiel in a tennis tournament, or feature a scene where Unit-01 and Unit-02 perform a dance routine to Beyonce's Single Ladies. Honestly, those sound about as plausible as any other theory at this juncture. x3

Switch 2.0 and 3.0 around and you have my reaction. That third movie is the one that made me properly interested in Rebuild. By the way, get used to calling the upcoming fourth movie Evangelion 3.0 + 1.0, because our overlord Anno is clearly not done trying to drive us insane.
