I'm pretty sure it's saying that when we become who we truly are (that is, at our core/heart of hearts/whatever you want to call it), we have also become who we will remain for the remainder of our lives - but it's stated in reverse.
If that's the case, then it's a quip that has no relevance to anyone's life, really, because, during the span of our lives, we never stop changing, therefore, according to this comment, during the span of our life, we never become who we truly are. Which is sorta accurate and insightful, but irrelevant to anything relating to anything within the span of our lives.
