I had a friend who grew up in Romania just before the end of the Cold War. He had clear memories of the days before the wall came down. It was neat hearing about all of that from someone my own age who had a much closer seat to the last exciting developments than I did. Romania occupied sort of an interesting situation among communist nations. It was ruled by a single guy who was way more like Kim Jong Un than say Mikhail Gorbachev. I hadn't even known that, so he was just telling me what he experienced growing up under that.

I've seen every film version except Kinski's sequel to this film which takes place in Venice. I like the 1922 version, I like the latest version...I loved Last Voyage of the Demeter as well. Nosferatu just seems more authentic than Dracula. Yeah Bram Stoker codified a lot of things and got it all into one story, and that's not nothing, that's no small feat. But the first part of Dracula could sort have been anywhere or nowhere in central Europe. Whereas, Nosferatu is never afraid to be clearly Carpathian, and then clearly German. Ears, claws, teeth and gothic spires and arches included. Dracula always leaves me hungry for something that Nosferatu does not.

Really sings on Blu Ray, thanks once again to Shout Factory for preserving a film that only I and maybe twelve other people really care about.

Have you ever created your own 'country'?
Night Sky replied to Bencass's topic in General Discussion
Not a country. But as I got ready to graduate college, I had my eye on a property that had a decent sized cave on it. I also had my eye on a group of friends, and it was kind of an off grid, art commune kind of idea, before going off grid really arrived on the internet. Of course the idea is nothing new, but it seemed radical and dope at the time, at least to me. All my friends told me that 1.) I was dreaming and 2.) that if they had to live together, they'd tear each other too pieces. So I got all pouty for a few years about the matter, I felt stung. I didn't act nasty about it, but it took a foolishly long time for me to internally process the fact that it's never gonna happen. There's a game I've played since high school that features a level with an inhabited cave system, that had a lot to do with it. There was also the idea that we're not gonna be students anymore so as adults we're gonna go our own way and change everything. Ha. Ah ha ha. Depending on your age, my bitter laughter may or may not sit well with you. But if it doesn't, try doing something like this or wait ten years and reevaluate. Countries that already exist don't like new countries being founded. A new country has to come from somewhere, and us humans live everywhere on this planet that it's practicable to live. Most of those areas are owned by countries... -
Post a screenshot from a/the last video game you've played!
Night Sky replied to Acinonyx's topic in Media Discussion
The Alpha Labs of DOOM 3 are a special flavor which I've never seen repeated in quite the same way, no matter how many bad Sci-Fi FPS games I continue to play. Most creepy is Alpha Sector 4, and while this screenie is not quite there, it nonetheless captures something of the essence of whatever it is that I am nebulously rambling on about this time. Notice a certain H.R. Giger inspired, non-rational biomorphic curvature to this machine, even if it is purely technological and devoid of any fleshly components. The Alpha labs in particular hint at a psychic environment as much as they do a physical environment, and for this reason I've always felt that here was the most frightening and unnerving part of DOOM 3. The game is very uneven, but imho, the Alpha Labs were the most successful part. -
Are there any songs that make you happy cry?
Night Sky replied to Snoopy Fan's topic in Media Discussion
Almost every version of this song gets me every time. And there are many versions. Liz Fraser's is certainly the best, but I am also a huge fan of Tim Buckley's original. They are very different, and yet somehow the same. With Buckley's version, I feel that I am getting in touch with something that I feel deeply but could never put into words. With Fraser's version, I just cry like a girl. The song is often interpreted as tragic, but to me it is both beautiful and romantic, albeit perhaps it is wistful. But, it has also been covered by ponies ranging from Sinead O'Connor to George Michael. God rest their souls. Also this; -
S07:E19 - It Isn't the Mane Thing About You
Night Sky replied to Jeric's topic in Season 7 Discussion
I liked this episode. This was a mellow, chill, cheerful slice-of-life episode, in the manner of seasons 4, 5, and 6, but with the transitional features we see in Season 7. Feels like it had been a long time where the focus was on Ponyville, with Ponyville ponies being given anything to do. You walk away from an episode like this on feeling happier and somehow refreshed. I like the fantasy and world building, and the epic arcs we see in FIM, I'm not a hater of those. But this show was also brilliant of taking day to day mishaps and turning them into instructive adventures. The jump cut to months later was kind of an interesting decision as far as pacing is concerned, we don't usually see a temporal jump on the order of months in a single episode. On this occasion, we did. -
I'm stuck in the Sphinx's riddle, - oh wait, I know what the answer is, it's Meh... Pharoah Meh of Somnambula. Another Daring-Do episode. I've said it before, I'll say it again, if we already have Rainbow Dash, why do we need Daring-Do? Daring-Do can't really do anything Rainbow Dash can't, and the only real difference between them is that Daring-Do, aka A.K. Yearling acts like an adult sometimes. At least this episode went into the history of the town they go and visit, and highlights some of the cultural differences between southern and central Equestria. I found the Egyptian themed story in this episode to be touching and cute. I am sure the internet is full of thesis papers written by 20-somethings about cultural appropriation and misrepresentation. I'll stick with what we see in this episode. The actual Egyptian myths talk a lot about Ra and Osiris sending Horus, in the form of the Winged Disc, to burn cities and slaughter disobedient humans. This episode was cute, but I'm just a bigger Dash fan than I am a Do fan, look at it like that. I dunno, RD's hair is 20% cooler than Do's.

I answered the poll that I have a mixed opinion. I'm certainly not saying that anyone should relate to death and funerals the way I do. But as for myself, if people wanted to gather to celebrate my life, that would be fine. But I'd want it to be a fun party with plenty of booze. I don't want an assembly of people who I care about to be sad about the fact that I couldn't last forever. Sure, I want them to get whatever support they need and to not be alone. But I don't think traditional funerals help anything. It's just how I feel. If you're gonna do it that way, then I want a pyramid too. But I won't be actually buried in there, it'll just have my name on it. I was going to be cremated. But if you're going to insist on putting me into a $15,000 dollar box, you might as well place it on top of a pile of TNT, and send a burning skeleton on a radio controlled wheelchair straight into me. Give those fireworks the light. All y'all really wanna stand back and plug your ears folks. When death arrives, nothing we say, do, think, pay for, or feel is gonna stop it. Boom. Make sure the burning skeleton is wearing a tuxedo and a top hat.

The last video I watched was on Top5s new unlisted Patreon YouTube channel. It's free, all you have to do is join the free tier on Patreon, they'll make the links to the unlisted content available for the asking. But these unlisted videos are the content they really want to be making. YouTube is taking the censorship too far. And no, it's not about protecting people's right to belong. It's about catering to the sensibilities of large corporations and foreign governments. I myself have run a channel of my own for 13 years. I have over 2 million views and 1100 subscribers practically. I think back to how the platform was when I created that account versus how it is now, and it's just a total bummer.

mega thread What game are you playing right now?
Night Sky replied to Mint Petal's topic in Media Discussion
Probably I am gonna jump into Mount and Blade Bannerlord again. Though I am thinking that I may need to start an entirely new campaign. I have been playing classic DOOM megawads lately. I have the new remaster of System Shock 2 by Night Dive studios installed still. I streamed through it twice. I don't know but I'm thinking that there's more to be done here. I oughta continue my let's play of Penumbra, but the game is old af and no one cares. I've had a lot of bad experiences with much newer cheap indie horror games that everyone on Steam praises, but they're all dull, repetitive and boring to play. I've been playing a lot of Ready Or Not, but the wistful world of Los Suenos is kind of a super niche experience, not for most people. Counter Strike keeps calling, once a stat tracker always a stat tracker. It sucks that I work so hard to support the team I'm on with suppressing fire, only to be dissed for not topping the leaderboard. But CS is the most toxic community on the internets. -
Stupid things you believed when you were younger
Night Sky replied to Fishy Stick's topic in General Discussion
I used to think that almost all lethal diseases were airborne and more contagious than many of them are. This particular anxiety got especially out of hand before I was set straight on it. I used to give people way more credit than I do now, but I also was a considerably more paranoid. I used to be more of a romantic, focused on feelings almost entirely. People have set me straight on that one, and then some. Oddly, I had hit upon a curious belief that there was something lurking up in Greenland. Then I found and played a computer game which told a story that might as well have been based on what I believed. That was really scary at first, but as I played the game, quite automatically, I became incapable of taking my ideas about it seriously anymore. It was kind of an anxiety reducing catharsis, even though the game itself is very spooky. -
Welcome to the forum. Nice art! Can't wait to see more!

Disappointed. There's so many people in this world who need help. And most of the people who took a job where your duty is to help people are too messed up for one reason or another to care anymore. They were fine until the job had its way with them.

I was at the neurologist yesterday myself and yes it was hot here in Missouri, so I get it.

Yeah, we own a decent little Questar. We can get sharp detailed views of lunar craters with it. Also, it can make out the rings of Saturn decently well. A couple years ago, we had a solar filter on it for a total eclipse, that was pretty rad.
