Why do you like Luna?

I don't think that I really tossed the word around as you claimed I did. In fact, my statement pertaining to the questionable hype of Luna as a character actually had some objective grounds to stand on. I often see people possessing a strong affinity for Luna, an affinity stronger than the ones they have for the Mane 6. This is questionable, as we have seen practically no character growth or development from Luna over the four seasons of the show. In fact, she's only had a single episode to herself in the entire show. We rarely see her, and when we do, she's often in the background, behind Celestia.

I'm also a bit surprised at the fact that you took my subjective opinion as fact. This makes me wonder if this is something you do all the time. Would you have produced a similar reaction to the statement "hotdogs are good"? Or what about "cats are cool animals"? In fact, according to your own logic, you have no right to declare Luna to not be overrated, and in fact, no one does. If we keep this up, we're going to be getting into paradoxical territory soon.

The phrase "Luna is overrated" is an opinion. It is not a fact, and it will never be a fact. That fact that it's an opinion is objective (wow, that was a really weird sentence). We are all entitled to our opinions, just remember that.

I apologize if I stated my opinion in a sort of "matter of fact" way. I wasn't maliciously attacking Luna's character, I was trying to hold a civil discussion. I like Luna, I think she's a good character. I really like her backstory. It's just that I was just a bit skeptical of the gross amounts of praise her character has been getting. I wanted to see if all this praise stemmed from her being relatable. I've never had a brother or sister. I've never had a shadow to live in. I wouldn't have known.

The problem lies in the way you've phrased the title of the thread. "Overrated" is a term that can be very easily misunderstood, although from the content of your OP, I can see that you mean it in terms of "I don't like Luna as much as most fans do, and I want to know what they see that I might be missing", rather than "Luna sucks, how can you possibly like her?" A title like "Why do you like Luna?" would have been much less prone to being misunderstood.

I see. Perhaps my phrasing of the title was a little bit rash. I thank you for revealing the error in my ways. I'll remember your post the next time I delve into a more sensitive topic on these forums.

Luna, her fans have gone as low as possible to cheat rather than winning fare and square

I see Applejack is your favourite pony. A few Luna fans cheated to with against Fluttershy. So this didn't really effect you did it. It effected us who think Fluttershy is best pony. But Luna fans were found out. And it is in the past now. I don't really see how a character i a show deserves hate just because some fans decided to cheat a bit.

Um, yeah, it was ONE Luna fan who cheated. ONE. You shouldn't make assertions about the entire group based on one individual in that group.

See until they win something fare and square i'll still hate her

But the thing is it is unfair to hate a character because one or maybe a few more cheated. And Luna isn't the only character that people have cheated for.

I believe @@Dark Qiviut would refer to this as "scapegoating". Hating a character based on the actions of ONE... repeat that, ONE!! fan of that character is not quite logically valid.

But, that said, do as you please... let's go back to how awesome I think Luna is...!  :comeatus:  :comeatus:

Skipping this because its not really the opinion on Luna I have a problem with, it's actually the term in general and how people use it.

1. Not really as "good" is already a subjective term and there's nothing really to prove if something is factually good. As for cool, that's a slang term that's been around for decades and has a clear meaning. Overrated is an objective term and even as a slang term doesn't have a clear meaning, it's either this sucks, I don't like it or I like it but not as much as everyone else, no one knows what you mean when you simply say "X is Overrated"

2. Actually Luna can't be declared or denied that she's overrated or underrated. If we're using the objective term, there's no audience to critic ratings to compare as she's just a character in a work and not the work itself. The term doesn't apply to to a work's quality it's just a comparison of scores.

The phrase "Luna is overrated" is an opinion. It is not a fact, and it will never be a fact. That fact that it's an opinion is objective (wow, that was a really weird sentence). We are all entitled to our opinions, just remember that.

An opinion that has no clear meaning as you're using a term that could mean a number of things

I apologize if I stated my opinion in a sort of "matter of fact" way. I wasn't maliciously attacking Luna's character, I was trying to hold a civil discussion. I'm not trying to be malicious either and again it's not the opinion I take issue with it's the term "overrated" itself.

LOL,

I find I like Luna because I am a former member of the New Lunar Republic.  So I am a bit biased.  But otherwise, she does have an interesting backstory and why did she turn into Nighmare Moon?

I dislike questions like this because it assumes there is some better way of being i.e. Luna isn't worth it. Liking Luna is as good a choice as liking any other pony and so long as you don't bash others you're golden.

It's a matter of opinion really. I think she's awesome because she has the capability of being a really great villain, but at the same time she's great at being a protagonist. I can see why people can see her as being overrated in the fandom though.

I pretty much don't care about Luna, though she is my second favorite princess in the show. (Twiley, opkors is #1. ahihihi.gif)

I don't have a best pone and won't ever have, and that includes my precious Woona.

(Am I starting to have a best pone and join the notorious Luna Fan Club?)

Maybe it's the fact that others have had to live in the shadow of their siblings, and they can easily relate with Luna?

Bingo, that is the reason that I like Luna so much.

Keep the thread on topic. This is not a discussion about the MLP World Cup and what occurred there. Derailing the thread doesn't serve any purpose but to kill the discussion started by the OP.

As a side note, I've changed the threads title for reasons Sunny pointed out.

In literature peripheral characters are routinely lauded and appreciated. Here is a list of a few some here may recognize.

Sirius Black

Dobby

The Other Luna

Finnick

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern

The Kid

A good story that can leave parts of the tapestry open to reader collaboration of the character creation will generally make the side character more appealing and interesting if the base parts that form a good character are followed. Luna is a perfect example of this.

Well that adds another person to the list of people who find Luna "overrated".

As for me; I admit that she's not the greatest character in the show, but she's still a good character. Both in her normal form and in her Nightmare Moon form. Mainly thanks to her interesting backstory and personality. She's pretty funny, too!

Much more than what can be said for Celestia. She does have her moments, but other than that, she's really boring and uninteresting.

I like Luna both because I like a good redemption story and because her portrayal in Luna Eclipsed really spoke to me. She made her mistakes but when I saw her trying to fit in with all the ponies hating and fearing her and them constantly misinterpreting her intentions reminded me a great deal of my childhood and teen years. She also has an er of mystery about her as well that adds a bit to her character.

This one still confuses me...why are they all princesses? Where's the king/queen?

Lauren Faust originally intended both Celestia and Luna to be queens but Hasbro wanted them to be called princesses because there is the long held trope thanks in large part to Disney of evil queens and good princesses. It is a completely stupid reason if you ask me but it is the reason why Celestia and Luna are called princesses even though they are queens/demi goddesses.

Maybe because she's simply Princess of the night. People are often intrigrued by the mystery, the darkness and silence of the night, so they are also intrigued about a character who represent all of that.
