Design Reviews & OC Help!

Plume

Recommended Posts

Hola you people! Another thread from me after the vector shop attempt and the signature fail. I've decided to make a new topic, this time relating to OC designs and stuff! I've always loved seeing other people's OCs, and, although I am really not that good at making them myself, I'm willing to try my hand and giving OC help/reviews! However, I don't feel I am comfortable enough to be able to give recommendations on the backstory of an OC, as I don't think I have a proper grasp of the lore. I will, however, happily give you some opinions on your OC's design! also I'm hoping seeing people's art will give me motivation to draw again ;-;

Basically:

1. Please be patient, I will try to do stuff as quickly as eloquently as I can

2. No NSFW please, I'm just not comfortable with it

3. Links to profiles are okay, but I'll just be referencing the image and the cutie mark section

4. I will not rate your OC's story, just the design and the cutie mark

5. I rate based off canon. If your OC is not meant to be canon, then I apologise.

6. I will do rainbow and alicorn OCs! Everyone is welcome here :)

7. If you would like, I can pm you for your review :)

So! Yea. Uh... with that, feel free to send in stuff! I'll get to them as soon as possible, and I'll brohoof your post if I've seen it and add you to the list :) If I've seen your OC before, I'll happily re-review it if you've edited parts of it :D

THE LIST:

1. Dusk Night

2. Arctic Sunbeam

3.

4.

5.

6.

7.

8.

Thanks! :)

Oh, and I don't know if you're accepting two OCs at a time, but if you are; I wouldn't mind some input on my other OC, Blue Moon,'s design. I'll leave a few images below. But if you're not doing two at a time, then you can just ignore Blue Moon. :P

@@Twi The Totodile

Colour scheme: Ah! She's cute! I love it :D Maybe it's just something about the pose, but her little grin makes me smile XD The colours you've chosen work fairly well with each other, and I like the blue and purple. I've got to say though, something about that cream seems to be a little off to me. It seems a little bit grayish, but hey, it still works! The only thing I've really got to say is that the green seems like the most out there colour. It's not exactly similar to the cream or the mane and tail, and it doesn't really tie in with anything. The same goes for the cutie mark. Maybe darken the cutie mark colour and use that for the eyes as well? That would help bring the whole design together, I reckon. Otherwise, she's fricking cute.

Cutie mark: Again, nice cutie mark! I like it quite a bit, but at the same time, I feel like it lacks... Substance? Is that the way to put it? Like, it seems a little bit thin to show up well against a pony's body. all the cutie marks you see in the show tend to have thicker lines and items so they pop, but I'm not honestly sure what to suggest to help. Since she's Aria Skysong, why not add a music note over the wind gusts so it looks a little bit more like manuscript for music or something? I'm not too sure. Otherwise, it suits her!

Mane and tail: Mane and tail are cute. I love the spa pony hairstyle, I really don't feel like enough ponies use it. Somehow though, I feel like it doesn't seem to really go together. Maybe you should try giving the tail the same sort of colouring as the mane: with a spiked effect and the lightening at the end? Right now, I feel like the lines of the tail are too different to the mane to tie together. But if that's what you're going for, then knock yourself right out. :D

Overall: B+! She's cute, and the colour scheme works well together as is, but maybe there are a couple of areas that could be improved. :D

@,

MIDNIGHT SHADE

Colour scheme: Holy butts she is adoRABLE! I cannot deal with this cuteness, it's just not the overwhelming. Oh my gosh I love her colour scheme XD She's adorable, as I've already stated. The purple goes beautifully into the blue, and it means that her yellow eyes really pop. Also, she's unique but still distinctively bat pony, because you've used the basic bat-pony colour scheme but made her still look different. :)

Cutie mark: Cute cute cute! Again, unique but still meshes perfectly into the show style. :D I feel like it symbolises her talent fairly well, since the moon is dark and mysterious and ties in with her batpony-ness. The paw print is a nice touch, and props for pulling colours from the mane and eyes. It helps tie everything together. :) The cutie mark idea is adorable as well, since bat ponies and those sorts of animals are all sort of misunderstood and considered "scary" by other ponies. I love it. :D

Mane and tail: Out of everything on this pony, this may be my only true problem since everything else is so amazing ohmygosh. I love the colours you've used, and the shape of the mane. However, the gradient effect is something that's never been seen in canon, and I'm not sure if it truly exists, other than a slight one on Celestia's mane. The same goes for the lion/ye olde unicorn tail: I'm mainly just unsure if it exists in canon at all, because it's never been seen. It still looks good and I like it on your OC, it's just a question of canon-adherence.

Overall: A! It's so cute, the colour scheme ties together well with everything, I love her cutie mark, and she's a great bat pony! But just the gradient and the lion tail means that it's not 100% canon. Even so, it's brilliant none the less. :D

SKATER

Colour scheme: Oh I love this. She's pretty, and her colour scheme goes well together. I mean, there isn't much to say since you have to go with the default changeling colours sort of. The only thing I would change is that maybe you should change the body shell colour to be the same sort of green as her eyes? That might benefit it, but I'm not sure, cause it seems pretty flipping good right now :D

Cutie mark: N/A XD

Mane and tail: Well, it's a ponytail. I dunno what to say. The fringey bit is a nice touch, and the tail matches well. Her hair is very changeling, I like it :)

Overall: A! She's a very nice changeling OC. There's not much for me to say XD

Colour scheme:

Oh my gosh. Normally, three fairly saturated colours always clash on a pony, but for some reason, the tones and colours you've picked work super well together. You may have literally found one of the only colour schemes that work well together, even though they're all super bright and colourful. :) Props to you, friend! Only thing would really be to maybe introduce a new colour for the eyes, but that again may be too many colours. Hard to say. It works well none-the-less!

Cutie mark:

The cutie mark has a nice colour to it as well. The design, I'm not so sure about. I couldn't tell what it actually was until I looked at your profile, but it does make sense now that I've actually figured out what it is XD This is where that fourth colour I was talking about would come into handy: maybe it would help differentiate the headphones from the coat? Either way, still works :D

Mane and tail:

Mane and tail be fricking cute and that is all. *whispers* everything is perfect shhhhh *whispers*

Overall: A! She's cute, and the colour scheme works well together as is, but maybe an extra colour could help :D

SORRY FOR THE LONG ASS WAIT

@@bronislav84,

Colour scheme: Her colour schemes good! The colours strike up nice balance, and it does make me think of metal work and electricity with the particular yellows and silvers you've picked. The colour for her eyes is very nice as well - to be honest, I don't think I'd be able to suggest a better colour. The only thing I've got to say… Hm… I'm really not quite sure about those markings on the hooves. They're very good and cute, but… We've never quite seen anything like that in the canon other than the rainbowfied versions of the Mane 6, and so I'm not sure if they're exactly a good choice. Other than that, she's great!

Cutie mark: Works. That's all I've got to say! It's big, it's good, but, at the same time, it may be just a little bit complex. It's quite a lot to take in, and needs a bit of studying/explanation to figure it out. But, at the same time, it does make sense, and I have no clue what to put otherwise, to good job. :)
Mane and tail: Cute! They tie together very well, but, again, it's not something you'd expect to see in canon. To be perfectly honest though, it looks so good I don’t really care XD
Overall: A! She's cute, the colour scheme works well together, and she's got a very fleshed out story from just first glance. You've put in a lot of effort, and it shows! Only thing is that her design isn't something that I'd think would fit into canon, but she's gosh-darn adorable as is. :D

Colour scheme: Oh my god he's beautiful. Like actually, I love it so much. XD The coat colour you've picked really works with the mane, and I love that his eyes match his hooves. :D The glasses are so cute, by the way. His hooves matching his eyes is also a nice touch!
Cutie mark: It's cute. However, it's a little bit… Sparse? Would that be the word I would pick? It's nice, but maybe another note or two to go with it would help flesh is out a little more. It seems a little small and lonely on the flank all by itself, if that makes any sense. Design it good though! Not sure about introducing that colour for the flowers though, since he's already got so much going on. I would maybe try pulling the eye colour for the flowers, or flipping it even so the note is brown and the flowers are green. I'm honestly not sure. Looks good though!
Mane and tail: So fabulous. Like seriously, he's fab. However, the rainbow mane is a little unique. It's only been seen twice in canon, and that's only for Rainbow Dash and he assumed parent. You can roll with it though! My main gripe is that his tie-dye effect has actually never been seen in canon, thus, we don't know if it even exists.
Overall: B+! He's cute, and the colours are good (albeit rainbow XD). He's adorable and fabulous, but… Just the mane and tail design hasn't been shown as existing in canon.

Colour scheme: Why is she so cute. I cannot. The colour scheme is so retro, it reminds me so much of something you'd find in a vintage antique shop XD Her browns, although there are a lot of them, work well, and the green and orange really shine through. Nothing much to say here. ^^
Cutie mark: I have absolutely no clue what it's supposed to be, I'll put it honestly. It's good, and it ties in beautifully with her colour scheme, but… What is it, exactly? I'm going to assume it's something I wouldn't understand unless I was into her special talent, so I'll leave it at that XD Edit: After reading the description in her profile, it makes a lot more sense ^^
Mane and tail: Gahhh cute! The chocolates are so cute. Makes me think of caramel choco swirl or something delicious. At the same time, it's sorta artsy too, I gotta give you that :D
Overall: A+! SHE'S SO CUTE I CANNOT. Her cutie mark hung me up a bit, but I realise now there's basically no other way you could've done it, so like props to you! :D

Colour scheme: Please stop it with your beautiful OCs. The colours are so blue and peaceful, brings to mind a glorious starry sky. :D The periwinkle is just gorgeous, and the darkness and boldness of his mane, tail, eyes and cutie mark help offset the body so it looks even better! I dig. I dig so hard. Also. Freckles. So cute XD
Cutie mark: SO PERFECT JUST I HAVE NOTHING TO SAY. It's simple and effective and beautiful.
Mane and tail: What a fabulous mane and tail. It's weird, cause normally such a spiky mane and such a sleek tail wouldn't match, but… Your OC is magic. It somehow just… works. //shrugs
Overall: A+! I've seen this OC so many times and honestly? Loved it as soon as I saw it, and that hasn't changed. ^^

@@Tao,

Colour scheme: I like it! The blues give a nice vide. :) But I feel like it’s a little… Cluttered? She seems to have a lot of colours going on in her palette. I really like the body, the mane and tail and the flower, but something about it just doesn't quite sit… right. Maybe try playing around with the body colour? Because right now it's very full on. I'd suggest maybe making the flower in her hair match the moon in the cutie mark, and then pull one of those colours or the highlight in her tail for her eyes. That'll give it a bit more of a uniform look I think. Otherwise, she's pretty cute!
Cutie mark: It's so cute, and it really stands out beautifully against the coat and the mane and tail that you've got going on. The colours are gorgeous, and the idea is simple and effective. I like it!
Mane and tail: The colours are so cute! I really do like the two colours in her tail, but I'd like to see maybe a bit more of that highlight in her mane. A lot of the ponies in the show (I'd go as far to say all of them) have a similar style for their mane and their tail. Don’t get me wrong, it looks really good as is, but if you wanted to go that extra bit it would be cute to thread some of the colour into the mane as well to really tie it all together. :)
Overall: B! She's really pretty as she stands, but with some edits to her colour scheme and possibly eliminating a couple of those colours she'd be brilliant!

Thanks. I'd almost given up on hearing from you. Glad you like her.   I'd never make a simple character, so that's the reason for the way her hair looks. It just isn't in my nature to be simple. The hoof burn marks are optional depending on how anal the RP GM is, and the character was designed way before Rainbow was even a thing. Around Season 3 I think. I really have no idea why people seem to think Rainbow transformation when they see it, but oh well.

Sorry for the long wait ><' I do like her, and it's brilliant to see such depth and investment in one character. That's very clever, by the way - the hoof markings being optional means that she fits into a lot more rps than she would before. :D Probably just because of the lightning shape - a lot of people tend to remember that episode as a highlight one, since so much happened and many a merchandise was made that day so it's natural to associate a memorable design change with a similar one. Personally, I love it to bits cause you rarely see hoof-marking on OCs beyond the usual hooves. :P

@@Blue Moon,

No problem! They are very very cute though XD

@@JonasDarkmane, @@Tao,  @@Hibiscus Bloom,

Sure! Starting on those now. :)

EDIT:

@@Hibiscus Bloom.

Colour scheme: She's so cute ma gawd. Her colours are limited, but they all work, and… Somehow, they remind me a lot of a very… Human colour scheme (?). There aren't any pastels like you'd expect to see in the show, but the bright eyes and the cutie mark against the brown and white of her body is so cute XD I really do like her design quite a bit. You've managed to bring each of the colours from her cutie mark into her design somehow, and it gives a very polished look. I like it. My only gripe would be that the hoof markings are something we've only seen on stallions in the show. However, in some of your pictures, she doesn't have the hoof markings, so I'm not quite sure if it's a regular feature or just artist's interpretation, but, personally, I prefer her without them. The freckles are adorable as well. Cute as a button. :D
Cutie mark: Very nicely done, especially considering the fact that you used all the colours from her coat, mane, and eyes somehow in it. Gives a uniform appearance for your OC. :D Simple and easy to understand - I didn't even have to read the description to be able to hazard a guess at what her talent was. Nice and solid, it does a good job of standing out from the coat. Good job!
Mane and tail: Not much to say here. Personally a big fan of the design, especially how simple it is. The lack of highlights sometime takes away from a design, but I feel like it adds here - it's not to complex so her eyes and lower really shine.
Overall: A+! Cute. That is all. :D

Colour scheme: I like it. I like it a lot. :D It gives a very… Evil vibe, and I think that's somewhat what you were going for. The mane looks good, and so does the coat as is, but… Something about it just doesn't quite feel right. I'm not sure what - I have no clue what colour I'd suggest in place, but it seems a bit dark and full on, especially since you already have the mane as well. So much so that the cutie mark is a little swallowed by the rest of his design. I'd suggest maybe lightening it somewhat so it stands out a little more? Again, unsure what to suggest here. It seems a bit out of place. Maybe pull the red from his mane a put an x on the map, I don't really know. It looks pretty good as is though, so no changes are fine too ^^
Cutie mark: I dig. Simple but effective. Standing alone, it's very easy to understand. That's all I got XD
Mane and tail: Vinyl Dash wubsies XD It's great, and I like that you've gone for it - it really suits your character I think. Normally I'd advise against red and white/black/gray, but it works :)
Overall: B+! Great as is, but something about that colour scheme is a bit in your face. Otherwise, pretty goshdarn menacing and evil-looking. :D

Colour scheme: Firey! He's very nice to look at, and the overall orange theme looks good! However, that body colour is a bit too much orange, I think. His mane and tail are both very bright, and I think with a dark body colour it sort of drowns out the effect his mane could have. Maybe try matching the mane and tail to a light creamy beige, or possibly even a coral. Think Spitfire: a color sort of the same saturation and brightness as her body, but at the same time not that colour or else he'd look too much like Spitfire. I do love that green from his cutie mark, and I think it would look brilliant as an eye colour as well - that will probably make his whole design a bit more tied together. Even so, he's still pretty nice as is!
Cutie mark: So nice. It's very easy to tell what his talent is, and that green is so pretty. However, at the same time, it's a little thin I think for an MLP cutie mark. It feels like somethng should be in the space between the two laurel branches, like a medal or something, but there's nothing there XD Could just be me though, so I'm not quite sure.
Mane and tail: Beautiful like my gosh the colours are so pretty and I love the pattern. Just slight nitpick - the gradient isn't something we've seen in canon before. Even so, it looks beautiful so I don't really even give ^^
Overall: B! Great as is, but that body colour could be lightened/darkened a bit, the cutie mark may need some tweaks, and his eyes lend with his mane. Otherwise, he's pretty solid!

@@AmberDust,

Colour scheme: Not much to say here, cause I gave my two cents in the post where you were asking for colour assistance ^^ Main thing would be just to remove the earring, I think. It’s neat, but it looks a little strange.
Cutie mark: I actually really like this mark. A lot of people go for literal marks (including myself) so it's really refreshing to see a symbolic mark for once! I really do like the colour and design, and the little white glow behind it helps emphasise it on her flank. It does like a little bit odd, but at the same time, without it I think the mark would just disappear. She's truly adorable though, so good job!
Mane and tail: I have a soft spot for braids. I really do. So cute XD Mainly I would make some streaks in there to vary up the colour, but again, refer to my post in your colour thread to see what I like. XD
Overall: A for Cutie pie! She's so nice to look at, and I love her cutie mark. I would personally just get rid of the earring though, but, again, that's up to you. ^^

It looks pretty good as is though, so no changes are fine too ^^ Cutie mark: I dig. Simple but effective. Standing alone, it's very easy to understand. That's all I got XD Mane and tail: Vinyl Dash wubsies XD It's great, and I like that you've gone for it - it really suits your character I think. Normally I'd advise against red and white/black/gray, but it works :) Overall: B+! Great as is, but something about that colour scheme is a bit in your face. Otherwise, pretty goshdarn menacing and evil-looking. :D

Thank you for your review ;). Yes my character is pretty evil :sneer:.
