general questions How do i upload gif's?

I have found several GIF's that i want to use on the forums (mainly the welcoming plaza). However, when i put it up as apicture it either says the site dont allow the image extension or it just ignores that it's on my post. I don't know weather it's my fault or the gif's, etc. So i would like to know if there any specific way to upload them, anywhere i need to save them and do they need to be of a certain size? Thanks everypony!
