Roughshod 719 February 28, 2015 Share February 28, 2015 (edited) There's no objective answer. If the dress looks one set of colors under a certain lighting then it is those colors. If it looks a different way under different circumstances then that's how it looks that way. If the image can appear to be taking different colors depending on the way it is shown, why should one trump another? The brain is not static, it's constantly processing in different ways. We're talking about sensory experience, there's no right or wrong, there only is. An illusion =/= reality. The dress is black and blue. That's not even an argument. Any direct experience can be called an illusion or a reality based on perception. In fact an illusion is just another version of reality by that definition. Your opinion regarding your visual experience or that of others is not an absolute authority. Edited February 28, 2015 by Roughshod The truth is always rough. Skeleton Kin 385 February 28, 2015 Share February 28, 2015 This meme needs to die quickly, it's not funny, it's not important and most of all it's not even a nice looking dress. It's been confirmed as black and blue, end of discussion, now it can go into the depths of Tumblr, never to be seen again.
Roughshod 719 February 28, 2015 Share February 28, 2015 This meme needs to die quickly, it's not funny, it's not important and most of all it's not even a nice looking dress. It's been confirmed as black and blue, end of discussion, now it can go into the depths of Tumblr, never to be seen again. Well at least it has scientific and philosophical implications. I mean, if someone could only perceive visual light through shades of green for example, how could you argue the colour of the dress with them? You could use the bandwagon claim that most people see he dress similarly to you and thus you're right but that's a logical fallacy. You could also try to account their perception to some sort of disorder in their body, such as their iris or brain chemistry. But this argument could go both ways and only holds water if you ultimately base it on what is average as opposed to what is rare, that is, their unique perception of light. Once again it comes to relying on a sort of bandwagon mentality for establishing a precedent that can be then used to distinguish divergent conclusions regarding an image's appearance. But generally speaking it isn't all that important to me, just an interesting thing to think about. The truth is always rough.

Justin_Case001 4,889 February 28, 2015 Share February 28, 2015 I love this kind of stuff. Photoshop is kind of my thing, so... I see blues ranging from washed out sky blue to bluish grays. I also see unsaturated brownish golds and dark grays, mostly in the brown/gold spectrum. But without ever reading anything about this debate, I could tell with absolute certainty that, in real life, those are black stripes. I can see the grayish golds and browns because, technically, that's what's there. That's the color of those pixels. But I know the stripes are black because I can tell that that's what bright sunlight does to black. I have a good eye for this stuff. Let's take a look at some comparisons. First, sampling various regions with the eyedropper tool to see what the color actually is. You can see from the eyedropper placement where the color was sampled. As you can see, the blue parts are mostly in the blue spectrum, and are fairly washed out grashish blues. Some parts are in the violet spectrum. The black stripes fall mostly in the hot colored spectrum, ranging from reddish to goldish yellow. Now, let's up the saturation by 100% without changing the hues. Voila. The blues are definitely more blue. The black stripes are obviously very gold, because that's the spectrum those pixels are actually in. Now, normal saturation, but brightness and contrast greatly increased. Again, the black stripes become very gold. Hues were not changed. That's the color the pixels really are. The blue parts become very washed out, with many parts nearly white. Finally, the original image with brush strokes on the side showing various samples directly from the image. Whatever your eyes see on the left, those strokes on the right are indeed the colors that make up most of the dress. There's no black anywhere in that image, but again, I would definitely say that it's a (hideous) blue dress with black stripes. When exposed to sunlight at that angle, black fabric will often appear goldish. If the stripes were actually gold, the lightest parts would be nearly white, and the darkest parts would appear about the hue of the lightest part of the original. We would also see more saturated oranges and yellows. It would look something like this: I find this kind of stuff very interesting. This was fun. Thanks.

Surface 115 March 1, 2015 Share March 1, 2015 Sometimes I see black/blue, sometimes I see white/gold. If I didn't know the answer I would say white/gold. Your brain can see the dress being in a bright white/orangish/yellowish light, or a dark bluish light. The colors that are in the image (with the weird light) are dark gold and light yellow. derp

Jokuc 8,173 March 1, 2015 Share March 1, 2015 @@Justin_Case001, Well, if you take the dress... bump up the contrast.... invert the colors... and revert all colors in the color balance so it goes back to normal values.... ...you can clearly see that the dress actually is red and yellow
DubWolf 17,263 March 1, 2015 Share March 1, 2015 It's gold and white if I look at it directly, but if I cross my eyes, I can actually see that it's nlack and blue. Sig by Wolf, Handwriting by SparklingSwirls

MechanicalDoom 300 March 2, 2015 Share March 2, 2015 It's black and blue, but it doesn't really matter that much. The internet had a war over the color of a dress. Let that sink in. My OC

Interesting, so you can't see the numbers hidden on the two images inside the spoiler? And yeah it is. It's a color blind test for blue. There's a number in each circle. Unless you're color blind with the color blue you should be able to see the numbers.

Sceethe 704 March 2, 2015 Share March 2, 2015 Same dress, same tumblr user, same blag, different lighting Y'all white and gold seer be tripping in the photo, though, it isn´t. that´s just a fact, you can check that with every image-editing program. the colors in the PHOTO are desaturated blue, and a darker orange, and that´s exactly what my brain sees. It´s is definitely interesting to me how other people can see the base colors of the dress through a photo without any reasonable lighting context.
