general media Teacher Puts Autistic Student's Head in Trash Can

Excuses, excuses. No, she probably didnt realize the consequences because she knew the school wouldnt do jacksh*t. And what might have lead her to think it was ok might have been a childhood of bullying other children and not being reprimanded. And who cares about her sides of things. Even if the kid was acting up putting his head in a trash can isnt the right reaction. She is an adult. She should act like one.

It's completely unfair to treat her like she isn't human anymore. The child is alive, probably unhurt, with a few emotional scars to bear. He will grow up and get over it. He'll move on with his life, possibly as a better person because he now knows how people can sometimes react to his behavior.

The teacher, however, is going to have to deal with this for a long time. Her friends, family and coworkers will all look at her differently. If she wants to make amends it's pretty likely that she won't be allowed to. This situation is not just about what she did to the kid.

I'm not saying she shouldn't be punished or people should act like it never happened but because he's a child and because of the way they're reporting it she's going to be reviled, maybe even recognized by people who didn't previously know her, and it's just going to make her life so much worse.

If nothing else, she is involved so her side of things is as important as the child's.

She meant every single word to that kid, sure she may be humiliated; but its best to let her learn that lesson the hard way. She should have gotten more than that though. She brought this upon herself, there's really no excuse.

I'm not condoning what she did or saying she isn't at fault but the consequences for it are going to be harsher than necessary because of reports like this that are doing nothing but pitting everyone in the nation, even the world, against her.

And people are only going to act like she'd do that to other kids as well. Maybe she will, maybe she won't, but no one will give her the benefit of the doubt.

He's likely removed from her class and now people know it happened. The situation is resolved. It's going to keep dragging on for years to come though.

I'm more concerned of a teacher doing that to a kid in general more so the kid having autism, since this is borderline child abuse.

Correction: This IS child abuse. She's charged with child cruelty.

That "teacher" is a sorry, disgusting piece of garbage! I don't care how that kid behaved. You NEVER treat any kid like that. It's despicable, and I hope she never get another teaching job again!

Shocking? Yeah.

Surprising? Just slightly.

People in general tend to be very ignorant about what autism is and really, these sorts of things tend to happen as a result of that. Unfortunately for all of us and those who are autistic, the best that could be accomplished with this moral rage is this teacher getting fired. All things said, all things done, nobody gets any smarter and so the conditions that allow this sort of thing to repeat itself remains intact. Nothing changes - only the faces do and so do the names, so do the stories.

I don't know. Child cruelty is a very serious crime in the U.S., and the way that scumbag treated the autistic child is some of the most heinous I've ever heard. One great thing this school did is immediately call police after an eyewitness immediately headed to the higher-ups.

There's a possibility she'll be sent to jail unless she agrees to a plea deal (which I hope involves mandatory jail time).

The consequences should be harsh. This thug — since "teacher" is too nice for that woman — is responsible for educating and protecting children. No matter what he did, she has no excuse to abuse anyone, especially a clinically diagnosed autistic child. She failed as both an educator and protector by inciting the violence.

It would be great if the justice system made an example out of her: If you try to abuse any child, whether you're a parent or teacher, you're going to suffer the consequences. She deserves a stiff jail sentence.

Just because it may've resolved in the classroom doesn't mean it's over, nor it shouldn't. This case may be heading to court.

You guys won't believe this

I believe it.  I don't even find it hard to believe.  Teachers / school faculty are perfectly capable of doing really stupid, senseless things.  There's this strange attitude (or, I find it strange) some take towards "educators."  As though they're these characteristically selfless, trustworthy individuals.  No: Some teachers suck.  And even if they do a hundred things right, they can make one big, fat mistake that negatively impacts the life of a student...  Possibly long term.  Honestly, there wasn't a moment during the whole trash scenario where she realized it might be a bad move?  Maybe shoulda rethought her disciplinary method?

Her actions indicate she doesn't know how to deal with kids, this still doesn't excuse her outrageous behavior towards an autistic child. I would've kept someone watching her just in case this happens, only hire those who have experience in that field; apparently they neglected to ask if she had any.

You guys won't believe this, a teacher puts an autistic child in a trash can; comparing him to Oscar the Grouch. I would be fuming and have her fired for such actions, this is unprofessional; and this school seems to not even be taking this seriously, worrying more about their reputation than this child's cruel mistreatment.

You know what the worst thing is? I absolutely can and do believe somebody would do that. To the point in which I'm simply unfazed. They're a horrible person and I acknowledge it, but the true impact of the event is all but gone to me.

I was saying you guys would, but its unbelievable that this happened to such a young child. The best thing to do is remove the pay completely, since she violated a school policy.

Chances are her whole career in teaching is done now.

Also, I don't support the actions keyboard warriors have taken. What she's allegedly done is really bad. But people need to stop calling out for her head on a pike. He'll grow out of it. Chances are she's set her entire life back 10 years, and this could lead her on a terrible downward spiral - possibly one with a long drop and a sudden stop.

I can understand that, and i'm not saying i want her head or anything; just that she needs to learn that her discipline has cost her job. And hope she learns from this experience altogether.

Oh yeah, without a doubt. There's no way she should be let off with just a slap on the wrist. You don't simply enter the teaching field. She should have known how to professionally handle herself. But the comments about her are pretty horrendous. Wanting her assaulted, jailed, killed. All far more obscene than what she actually did.

I'm surprised at my ability to be absolutely chill about this incident.

What probably happened is, due to some misunderstanding because the child has Autism, the teacher stuffed him in the trash can as punishment. I'm guessing she was new on the job and didn't know the full extent of Autism and the effect it has. She's also older, which I would say is a reason that would ever be considered as a punishment.

Wait... HOW THE HELL DID SHE EVEN GET THIS JOB!?!?

I have Asperger's and I find this incredibly disturbing and horrifying. How could anyone do that to another human let alone a child? I'm sorry, but I just find this horrifying and unforgivable.
