pizza is "italian, fast food edition" - it tends to have low-quality ingredients, and is basically a toasted cheese-and-tomato sandwich.

(that said, if you get bread bases and make it yourself at home, it can be awesome; use a decent pasta sauce (with herbs, and maybe some finely chopped veggies) as the base layer, some good quality cheeses, and simple topping ingredients (I like cubed ham and mushrooms, but that's me)

but most pizza has the same relationship to real Italian cooking that any fast food has to any other sort of cooking.
