So this show and fandom have inspired me to become a professional writer, or rather, was the catalyst to make me realize this is what I was meant to do all along. Almost like a cutie mark.

I got my start writing a fanfic, but I've not actually published any of my works. They are just a bunch of loose first drafts. I think the concepts are good but I would like to know which of these are stories most would like to hear told. Please tell why you voted the way you did if you are up for it.

The Conversion Bureau: Ascension - My stab at TCB mythos and my first fanfic, in fact it was the singular catalyst that lead me to writing. It is a self-insert story based off of my and my brother's relationship to the show and fandom as represented by the existence of Equestria and ponification. Over the course of the story, back and forth between Earth and Equestria, friendships are made, brotherhoods are tested, and there is not a sign of misanthropy or pony superiority in sight. (At least as far as intrinsic worth is concerned, ponies obviously still retain their magical abilities.)

Con Mane - A spy thriller in Equestria in the vein of a James Bond movie starring Con Mane. Stalliongrad is threatening to secede from Equestria, and not peacefully. A threat has been made against Canterlot by a third party intending to incite conflict between the province and her mother nation. Con Mane is ordered to investigate and stop the escalation, reluctantly taking on a partner in the form of a hot shot pegasus operative Danger Zone. Will Con Mane discover that not even the master spy can survive long without friends?

The Fast and the Furriest - The automobile has been proliferated across Equestria. While it has brought wonders to commerce, transportation, and industry, it's also bred a new breed of criminals. The criminal underworld has become more powerful under the leadership of a charismatic and intelligent pony named High Octane. The royal guard and local law enforcement cannot handle this new motorized mafia. So Princess Celestia charges the low level trouble maker Wildfire with a substitute for jail time, infiltrating the car-tel by competing in their underground street racing tournament and arresting Octane.

My Little Gears: War is Magic - Big Macintosh, Shining Armor, Bulk Biceps, and Soarin are Delta Squad in the military of the T.R.O.T. They must battle a subterranean threat to protect Canterlot, the last safe city in Equestria.

This is something I have some trouble with as I have the general idea but I am split on who substitutes as the Locust. The immediate comparison was obviously the Changelings being an insectoid hive mind who already have the goal of conquering Equestria. However I also had an idea to use the Diamond Dogs due to their already subterranean lifestyle and burrowing abilities comparable to the Locusts.

Hooves of Warmth, Fists of Steel - Equestria is invaded and conquered by the Decepticons. The Mane Six manage to get a last ditch signal out to . . . someone but at the cost of Rainbow Dash being captured. Follow Twilight and company as they fight to resist the iron grip of the Decepticons until the Autobots can arrive. (Warning: massive amounts of Transformers continuity porn, from G1 to Prime.)

Horse M.D. - Dr. Safe House is the best diagnostician of diseases magical and mundane at Princetrot Hospital. He's also a real ass and no, not the donkey kind. Abrasive, pain killer abusing, and uncaring of pony's sensibilities, he's on the edge of the medical board ignoring his prodigal talent and skill. Could the addition of his only real friend perhaps lessen his tendencies enough to make him better? . . . . Probably not, but at the least tolerable. Even still, there is a greater case to be solved. Why does everything to House feel like a kind of deja vu? Why does the Princess have such an interest in keeping House employed and "happy?"

Fluttermind - Twilight Sparkle and her friends have changed greatly since they met. Between adventures and just spending time with one another, they have all matured. There have been more literal changes however, and not all of them were good or even consensual.

To the others' horror, they one day discover that Fluttershy won't wake up from a deep sleep. With the help of Princess Luna, they must venture deep into her mind to find out why and how to wake her from this mental prison.

Con Mane looks like it has the potentially to be delightfully cheesy, and it has my full approval :D

These are all some really good ideas though

Well it is as the same kind of Martini flavored spy thriller of the classic Bond movies, so that tone is intentional.

Thank you. I realize most of them are crossovers but I think I can make some original scenarios out of them.

Can't wait to see little laser horseshoes :D

A good mindset, use it as a base but put some of your own ideas into them :P

Well it's less "my own ideas" and more what can I make happen with the combo scenarios. Especially since most of the crossovers are of the fusion variety as opposed to one world crossing into another. So the tones and themes of both can bleed into each other more seamlessly.

Exactly, like Fallout: Equestria :P

Conversion Bureau because to me, it's the most gripping, you've put alot of work into it and it has a lot of promise.

The thing is, the story is very "busy." In it's current state, it's almost like four and half stories together. It would take some serious overhaul with the writing techniques I know now.

Do you think it's worth overhauling?

So how would you make it less "busy" re-space events, maybe take some out?

Unfortunately, that might be best. As it stands it's a coming of age story, a Cain and Abel tale, a spy thriller, a superhero story, a Western, a small town unites against a threat, an existential mystery regarding Princess Celestia, and a metaphorical tribute to the fandom all at once.

So maybe trim the genres it encompasses?

So what would you do then?

The thing is, those genres take up either pivotal scenes or several chapters. Hence, my hesitance.

I don't know! Okay? This is why it's a daunting task, I don't even know how to approach it. Hence why I created this thread to begin with. To see which story I can at least focus on for a time.

Heh, sorry, it's just hard to think of how to compress a story not being its creator.

Try doing it when you ARE the story's creator.

(No worries though, I will think of something and have I mentioned how much I hate the word count?)

I chose this one for a variety of reasons.

  • Coming from my experience and fact in a fiction writing class I had, basing a story on your life, or things you have experienced makes the story feel incredibly more realistic, even if it is fictitious.
  • It addresses the question, or so it would seem something similar to it, that I have seen floating around for a while: "If you could visit Equestria and never come back, would you?" Of course, as stated, the textual bones indicate that you can return to Earth. Nevertheless, it would in part address this question to a certain degree, and something I'd like to see other people opinions on whether or not in fictitious form.
  • It's based off of something that lead you to writing. Because of that, I'd assume that there would be a lot of promise and inspiration going into this work.
  • Well, I had to choose an option. xD

Cheers and good luck ^^.

These are all amazing ideas. Far more creative than anything I've ever come up with when I was trying to get into creative writing.

On the Locust substitute: Why not do both? Plot twist it so the Diamond Dogs were actually changelings that hid their true nature or something. Alternatively they morphed into Diamond Dogs to obtain their power of digging underground for the tactical benefits, possibly with the help of an artifact or third party magic to give them the true essence of the Diamond Dogs' abilities?. It's fanfiction. Anything's possible. <.< >.>

I think TCB is a particularly interesting topic because you can change the situation to reflect real events in the world or brony fandom were the ponies actually there to contribute.

Well no, not everything is possible. Take it from a writing major. You can't just change the rules for no reason because then the audience will loose investment, the willing suspension of disbelief would be broken. This is only exacerbated in fanfiction because you are not working with original rules, but rules already given by the mother franchise. On top of even that, this is a crossover. The rules of both worlds have to either blend, or one must compromise in some areas but not others and you, as the writer, have to make it clear who can do what and when.

Well no, it doesn't work that way. This isn't Equestria emerging on OUR Earth where the My Little Pony franchise exists and the brony fandom by proxy. Do you see Transformers toys in the Michael Bay Transformers movies even though they take place on Earth?

I guess what everyone else wants is different than what I want. I like to break all the rules and it's most fun when that happens in fanworks. Guess that's why I don't write. :P

Well you can break rules, but then you have to be clear on why they are broken, and then that means the rules have changed, if they change yet again, then the story becomes simply unbelievable. Even your investment can be stretched too far.

Take for instance when Discord took the Elements of Harmony.

"What fun is there in making sense?"

He could take them because they were secure, but not from him because his whole shtick is that his magic doesn't conform to the standard. When Celestia reinforced the magic later though, he could no longer just zap them away. If he did still than he would THEN have to explain why he could do that.

Unicorn magic works via the horn, they casts spells, and a unicorn's magic is stronger when related to their special talent. These are the rules Equestria works by. You can change them in fanfiction, but you have to establish why, not necessarily through dialogue, but someway somehow.

Writing is a craft, you can experiment, but you have to know the rules before you can break them. Otherwise, NO ONE, not even you, would care.
