Are Igneous Rock and Cloudy Quartz offensive?

Yeah, part of Hearthbreakers had me concerned that Igneous Rock and Cloudy Quartz could be considered offensive Amish stereotypes. So, do you consider them offensive?

I haven't heard anyone offended by it. To be honest, there's always going to be someone offended by something. It's the Internet.

Offensive or not, having stereotypical characters is usually not a good thing when you're dealing with a show with as strong characterization as MLP, and the parent Pies were gimmicky to make up for their lack of characterization. However, they didn't seem to imply any ill will or denigration of the Amish people.

The Amish don't even watch TV so how could they be offended? Lol

LOL!! I know right?

And they don't use the internet either, so no one that finds them offensive would even be here to answer. XD

Unless you're one of those people that gets offended FOR other people.

I didn't find anything offensive about them but, considering the state that this country is in, I'm 100% certain that there's an Amish guy out there somewhere who's ripping his beard out and boycotting Hasbro as we speak.

I would not say that the characterization of them is offensive, that they're similar to Amish. That's perfectly fine. What I would say could be offensive (to the Amish, if in fact they were intended to appear Amish, or really any fundamentalist or "old fashioned" or even just religious family) is the fact that their lifestyle and traditions were portrayed as being boring, disappointing, unacceptable, and in dire need of transformation.

Someone give this person a f*cking metal.

Anyways, there's ALWAAAAAYS going to be someone who's offended by SOMETHING. Everyone cannot be pleased when it comes to character development and execution...it's the inevitable in all media. I wouldn't even consider them Amish though they DEFINITELY give off that vibe and people would consider Pinkie Pie that "teenage daughter who leaves the village to live in the modern world" stereotype.

They seems very accepting of what the Apple Family had to offer. The only reason why they got upset was because Applejack turned their tradition upside down overnight without once warning them or even considering the importance behind what they do. I would have been upset as well. Besides, in the scene where they were alone with Granny Smith, they seemed to like her. I found it cute how they were a bit taken aback by her "farming hunks" statement, but merely accepted it by saying "ha...well yeah maybe there are some"

As a Texan, I LOOOOOOOVE Applejack. XDD

Exactly.

This conversation came up on this forum in the past, but people need to learn the difference between humorous stereotypes that poke a little fun at a group and bigoted portrayals.

Welp, I expected to see this thread eventually. honestly, I don't see how they could be offensive at all. They seemed pretty typical. I don't know a whole lot about the Amish but, isn't that kinda how they are? I don't know about their accents and their vernacular but their life seems pretty standard. What exactly could be seen as offensive? Nothing was mentioned here.

Personally, I'm more offended at AJ's trampling all over their traditions, being unappreciative and materialistic, and outright disrespectful by calling the Apple Family's tradition better, rather tan, like the Pie family, appreciating what they have.

I'm not the least bit offended by the Amish stereotype that Big Mama Q and Iggy were supposed to represent. I think aLOT of people could do to be more like them, actually.

Funny joke about technology aside, there is a situation where younger Amish may indeed be able to view MLP. Before baptism younger Amish can choose to leave the community with no effect on them rejoining. Though this period is usually used for dating and finding a spouse, some do bolt temporarily. They would have exposure to television in these cases.

As someone who grew up near and visited a Lancaster community fairly regularly ... it wasn't offensive to me, and based on my experiences with talking to several of them during various stages of rumspringa ... it likely wouldn't offend them in the least, especially since it really didn't parody anything exclusively Amish ;)

Except that's not what the latest episode suggests. Applejack learns that their lifestyle and traditions are just as important, acceptable, and rich in history as any other. Even her family accepted that they didn't need to change anything about themselves. By and large, Equestria is considered a very welcoming place for many lifestyles, and capable of learning what should and shouldn't be accepted.

Well they could be offended. Everyone is offended by something on television anyways. If they gave a gay character have a lisp or is a snappy dresser some gays would take offense to that and so forth.

No matter what you put out there, someone somewhere is going to be offended by it.  And for every butt-hurt person voicing their gripes on the Internet there'll be a legion of SJWs crawling out of the woodworks to take up the cause, blow the issue way out of proportion and drag everyone involved into a grueling flamewar.

Personally I think some people just enjoy arguing over trivial matters and jump at any chance to indulge themselves.

They may talk rather stiffly, but their interactions with Granny show that they're pretty nice and accepting of others who live less rigid lifestyles with them teaching Granny their dialect and vice versa. Probably to be expected since they accept Pinkie for who she is.
