Where was the day?

If Celestia & Luna control the day night cycle then how come in the hearth's warming eve episode there was still a day/night cycle before the sisters where even there?

Pretty much. At first I was always skeptical about Celestia's and Luna's existence. Many people see....and perhaps they are....alicorns as Gods of the pony race. But honestly, I always believed they weren't....because the world could do fine without them period since they did before.

 

But from episodes like "Magic Duel" and Twilight's Kingdom" (that battle with tirek) I believe the only thing special about alicorns is they have stronger magic. Thats it.....just a higher level of magic than any unicorn, pegasi, and earth pony.

 

They don't necessarily have godly powers at all, and from their execution, they are just as dense and flawed as any other creature in equestria. Though this isn't a BAD thing of course. I do like all of the princesses....but yeah what sets the unicorns and Celestial/Luna apart is that the princesses can raise the sun and moon by themselves while the unicorns probably had to work together and struggle to do it themselves

The episode itself said that unicorns used magic to raise and lower the sun and moon.

Its also possible that there are other beings in the universe who have in the past taken over the duties of controlling the day and the night; if you accept the comics, Anubis seemed to have done so in the past as well.

Additionally, when Celestia and luna were imprisoned by the plunder vines the day and the night still existed, just in a state of perpetual stalemate next to each other. So even if the unicorns and the alicorns were to be taken out of the question, there might exist some sort of cycle of day and night, just not a Good one for civilization.

This might have been in the comic books, but it is my understanding that a group of Unicorns used to control the sun & moon.  It was a hard job for them & they used to burn out doing it

 

The princesses can do it alone because

1) Their cutie marks mean they have a knack for it, it is easier for them

2) As Alicorns,  they have Earth Pony strength & endurance, so it is less of a drain on them

3) Probably practice helps  Remember in Twilight's Kingdom, she did it but it was super hard for her even w 4 Alicorn power
