Ugly ponies

Hi everyone.

Well, I assume we all get used to the fact that MLP ponies are really cute and beatiful, no matter their gender and race. Well, at least, at first. So, I wonder -- why there are more and more ponies that can be defined only as ugly? I mean, it was a common thing that ponies in general look like we used to, but for whatever reason, creators decided to change this. Especially in the last episode, which was like a freak show, to me.

Any thoughts?

I never liked how Silver Shill looked, he also reminded me of myself, so that's a little depressing...but seriously, every moment he was on screen I couldn't pay attention to the story, I was too focused on his design

I think, they want to give us new character designs, instead of recolors.  I don't mind them, but I can see that yeah they might be "ugly".

Am I the only one that looked at those ponies in the last episode and thought, "inbreeding".  I mean it is possible that was the idea because the story is based on something that actually happened in Appalachia.  And there is a stereotype that Appalachians are inbred.

I don't get it. What's wrong with more varied character designs?

There's a difference between more varied character design and making them ugly. You can have two entirely different but both cute designs. Like, a regular pony mare and Princess Cadance, or Fler delies or how's her name. Two different designs, but cute. Both.

That's all very interesting, but that doesn't explain why all the characters need to be cute.

Probably because it's the show about cute, pastel colored ponies who solve friendship problems, no?

So let me get this straight: All characters in the show are supposed to be designed to be cute because that's how a good chunk of them are designed? And solving friendship problems has something to do with it apparently? Is this an all or nothing sort of thing? Sorry, I'm still not getting it.

It's the show about cute pastel-colored ponies. They are supposed to be cute, because it's the show about cute pastel-colored ponies, intended for kids. Kids like cute things. It's kinda obvious. If an adult who enjoys the show, wants to see ugly things, he can always watch South Park.

I really don't understand your logic. Are you intending that ugliness should be censored to children? New character designs of latest episode doesn't appeal to me, but that doesn't mean I believe they should be removed.

I think that kids will see all kids of ugly things in other shows, movies and the real life, of course. There's gotta be at least one show with cute characters, and why not MLP FIM?

Okay, I don't think you quite understand how this works. What makes most stories engaging (even to kids) is when characters are set up to go on a journey, have the audience learn more about them, watch them struggle, learn, triumph (or fail), and have the characters changed in some way after the journey. Likewise with the audience. Not some superficial bullshit like simply showing cute characters doing cute things.

But hey, I'm not a kid. So what do I know?

Then I should expect ponies to have an actual freak show there, huh? Like, you know, they showed all kinds of people with defects as a form of entertainment. So why not in MLP, then?

...When did I say that? The whole point of the post however was that there's more to entertainment than the physical appearance of characters, and that most kids can handle less-than-cute imagery. If they can handle that, I'm pretty sure they can handle middle-aged and elderly characters.
