web Have you ever been in Second Life?

Probably the most popular (and biggest) "virtual world" ever. I've heard some awesome things about it, both creepy and interesting, so I joined 3 days ago. Have you ever played it?

I've heard it's got the pay-for-play aspect of farmville, the slice of life feel of the sims, the social aspect of WoW, and the creepiness and annoyance that all of them put together would bring.

I played Second Life I think between 2007-2008 (it's kind of old, isn't it?).  It was pretty cool at first, and there are a lot of neat things that people make, but eventually you run out of things to do and find yourself spending money on fun items and clothing.  Granted, you don't need to spend a dime, but the really nice stuff usually costs in-game currency, which you can buy with real money or earn by selling items in-game.  Aside from shopping, there's not much to do except chat with people.  I'm not great with just hanging out with people online unless we're playing a game that feels like a game, so I eventually stopped playing.

I did have some fun times, though.  My fondest memory is my friend and I discovering a server based on Tatooine.  He put on his sandtrooper setup, and I donned my clone trooper gear, and we sat on a mine droid that patrolled the area.  We each had multiple cigars sticking out of our helmets, he had a drink in his hand, I was periodically activating a bubble gum bubble animation (complete with popping sound), and we were saluting anyone who passed by.

It really is old. However, it's regaining popularity around hispanics because of a popular venezuelan youtuber who uploaded a video about it recently. That's a great memory by the way!

I started back in 2007 and have been playing it off and on ever since. However, I will have to warn you that anything half decent such as avatars cost quite a bit, and once you start buying things like avatars and vehicles it can be difficult to stop; I don't know how much money I've blown on it over the years (probably in the hundreds), but I can personally tell you that it's not worth it and if I could go back in time, I would unbuy most of the things I purchased. So, while a lot of the stuff you see in-game is very tempting to buy, I'd advise against it. Also, if you want a private sim of your own where you can hang around and build stuff and terraform the land to your liking, you'll have to pay real-life currency; prices for that vary, but it's generally a weekly fee. In fact, you'll find that almost everything in SL costs money, so the potential to waste it is huge.

There are some pretty cool people on there, and I've met a few decent ones, but there is an iniquitous side to it, and if you spend any decent length of time there expect to have run-ins with some weirdos and creeps and people begging for "you know what". Plenty of people have harassed and bullied me on there as well for being a furry, though I don't think it's nearly as much of a problem now as it used to be; people are used to seeing furries by this point, though there's bound to be the odd troll or two. If you do bump into any bad people, chances are they're going to be the absolute worst--and I've had enough bad encounters on Second Life to be mostly discouraged from playing it. Sometimes I'll hop on to see if any of my friends are online (usually they're not), but other than that I steer clear.

I played it when it was still in beta and you got free points per day and when people upvoted you and your stuff etc and...

That was a long long time ago.

It wasn't money grubbing at one time.

Nope.

And I wouldn't dare to venture through inside because it feels like Playstation Home only way more awkward.

Oh Playstation Home.. I actually really liked it, used it for like a year and a half.

I tried it once quite a few years ago and found it kind of confusing/uninteresting.

The thing is, there's so many options and tools, and things to do, it becomes confusing, I couldn't even figure out how to change clothes.

Wow this is interesting. How did SL looked like when it was still in beta?

Yeah, and it wasn't filled with stuff that's not suitable for children. a shame that PS Home is gone ever since. It had a lot of potential. :(

It was tons smaller -- but a lot less mercantile.  A lot of stuff was free and most of the rest of it was cheap, and points came daily.  The community was a lot tighter knit because the only people on were people who were invited and those they invited.
