Do the ponies eat meat?

Daring Do  Unless school cafeterias have changed since I went to school, the mere fact that the alleged meat was greenish doesn't mean it was vegetarian.

Sister Hooves Social, Sweetie cooks eggs for Rarity.  Thus, ponies are NOT 100% vegetarian.   If EQ ponies are like Earth horses, they can't completely digest meat, but it isn't poison to them.  We can't fully digest Mexican food & we still eat it.

Also, AJ has pigs.  It is possible they are used for hunting truffles (expensive mushroom, pigs used to hunt it IRL) & for composting.  It is also possible they are used for lard (The ad department calls it shortening, but it is still lard)

Why else would they domesticate Pigs 0_0

For that pork and bacon grease.

Wether or not ponies are vegetarians, I think Griffons are NOT.  That beak, those talons, they are raptors (hunters).  In Griffon the Brush Off Gilda eats an apple, so they are omnivores not predators.  IMO, Dragons can also eat meat, although Spike seems to get by w what ponies eat + gems.  The original Minotaur from Greek legends ate people, so it's possible EQ Minotaurs are omnivores or carnivores.

In short, it is possible the pigs on the Apple farm are for export, not for sale to ponies.

As to Spike being able to eat the"baked bads" (Apple Buck Season?), Dragons can digest rocks.  This argues a digestive track that could defeat a Borgia (For the historically challenged, they were infamous poisoners)

Awesome find! Considering she talks to insects which are lower on the evolutionary scale than fish, I wonder what it felt like for her to murder some poor fish that were just coming or of torpor?

I suppose it's possible, however, that these fish were already dead - frozen and preserved in the ice and she goes around during Winter wrap-up and finds these unfortunate souls and puts them to good use for the other animals?

Sadly nope. They weren't just alive - they were cute and quite happy actually! Fluttershy even seemed happy to see them!  :yay:

But I really don't mind. What I do mind is this pointless need to sugarcoat and hide away "scary and bad" themes from kids. Eating meat isn't bad, its natural. Without predators, you'd get overpopulation, chaos and a fast dwindling of resources. Eating meat or killing animals is often fine. I'm not some die hard vegan or social justice worker - what Fluttershy did was completely understandable and natural - considering many of her pets are carnivores.

That pic is awesome! Next to the finale, this is the best thing I've seen today! They looked so happy to see Fluttershy, only to be betrayed a little while later!  :squee:

Not only would horses naturally be vegetarians, but also in a world where even little forest creatures seem to have some sort of sentience they are probably trying to avoid fridge-horror by having them eat animals that are intelligent and self-aware. There will probably be slip-ups here and there like the eggs because that would be difficult to keep straight 100% of the time, but it's safe to assume they are either largely or entirely vegetarian.

Also this show does not follow horse anatomy faithfully, at least in terms of digestion. There's one episode where some ponies got sick and appeared to be puking into buckets, where real-world horses can't throw up. It should be filed under the same cartoon rules that allow them to talk, do things on their hind legs that a quadruped couldn't, manipulate instruments that would require fingers with their hooves, or even talk.

They eat meat in the series, as shown in many screenshotsvin past posts. Just as horses eat meat in real life, though it's not their natural diet. They DO eat meat. https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0BxwgG31WBVSaZW51bDNjaENSdU0&usp=sharing&tid=0BxwgG31WBVSafnY1OTY4QVhxRktzUUZvSE9rWE1nSWJJWlU5Znl3dU1zX1YwdUFhczVfTDA

Pinkie Pie's exact quote in Over a Barrel is that ponies are "strictly herbivores". Them eating eggs (or chocolate) is probably due to the writers not knowing or researching about proper horse diet. Heck, Lauren Faust stated early on that she intended the ponies to be as anatomically and physiologically correct as possible, yet in third (or second) episode they had them vomiting, which is impossible for a horse to do.

it's not impossible. Just highly unlikely, unless the horse is very close to death

"Normally, the mechanics are such that the horse's stomach ruptures before the valve yields. If material does pass from stomach out the esophagus, the horse is dead or nearly so. That's why horses can't vomit. But, sometimes they do"

Source: http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/news/science/wonderquest/2001-05-02-horse-throw-up.htm

"horses have a weak vomiting reflex---in other words, the neural pathways that control that activity in other animals are poorly developed in horses, if they exist at all.

All that said, however, vomiting in horses has occasionally been reported"

Would be nice if you did research before assuming the writers didn't do theirs.

COMPLETELY!! ...Vegetarian!!

That is all.

Except, you can't rely on the character dialogue to accept something as 100% canon. Point in fact: Spike in S1E1 stated "I started out as a cute little purple and green egg," but then in "The Cutie Mark Chronicles":

post-25740-0-75263500-1449158543.jpg

Oh, wait...

And it was reconfirmed just last weekend when they showed his egg again in "The Cutie Re-Map, Pt 1". So the egg colors were not an animation error. Spike simply mis-spoke.

So it's possible for a character to say (or sing) something that may not be accurate. Not that I think the Mane 6 are chowing down on hamburgers, but there could be some ponies that aren't as strict about such things, since there are images in the show (animation error or not) that show meat products.

I don't think they eat meat, I mean they are ponies and they only eat like hay, oats, fruits, veggies, well generally just non-meat. Though this may be old, in the episode 'A bird in the hoof' the one scene were AJ was trying to choose in which food she should star eating first, there was a sandwich there with veggies and a...ham. Don't know if that was like an error in putting a ham/veggie sandwich there. O.o

Great relevant fic imo. Some won't like the concept but I like the idea of exploring social taboos.

Maybe they were trying to say in that scene that the nobles and such developed the taste for eating meat as it makes them feel above other forms of life like their general attitude portrays which is why she is frowning at it. Its symbolism.

But Pinkie Pie didn't die after eating the Baked Bads and vomiting, so it's still an error. Besides, a couple of worms aren't enough meat to kill a horse, in fact they would probably pass through undigested.

Well, their bodies certainly aren't above other forms of life, so it would be really hard for them to develop that taste, unless they enjoy frequent stomach pumpings. Edited by WriteCodes46
