spoiler So what was the point of the Cutie Map?

Spoilers for recent episodes.

The finale should conclude what the Cutie Map was for but it was just so it could show how Equestria changed whenever time was changed? I mean really? What was the reason it sent the mane six to places anyway? It stayed there even as time changed but that doesn't link it to why it sent the mane six to places.

Has it become just another quick and dirty plot device that never fulfilled it's purpose?

There is no purpose behind it, at least none so far. Its much like how there was NO purpose behind starswirl's spell from MMC except to serve as a deus ex machina to make twilight a princess. The map currently serves as a deus ex machina to get the others out and about in equestria to world build.

We may get something in Season 6 to explain it, but currently it has no overarching purpose, except that it serves a plot purpose and slightly increases the happiness of equestria.

GPS plot device to get the Mane 6 to travel somewhere and solve problems. Gotta have some logic for the members of the Mane 6 to get out of Ponyville and do their job. Rather than pairs traveling and run into a problem by coincidence.

Good question. If SG succeded in ensuring the M6 never got their marks from the Rainboom, then in any future, Twi never should've gotten her castle, because the castle in every future was gone, but the map was still there

And Twilight still was an alicorn in every altered future....(when she should have been without both cutie mark AND wings, in each future timeline)

Plotholes, much?

Well, one can handwave that away by Starlight specifically writing the Map into the spell as one of its variables; She stated she'd written the spell specifically to allow twilight to exist outside time instead of being retconned simply so she could suffer, so its not impossible that she made sure the map would continue to exist to allow for the time travel to occur.

The other option that I would have liked better would be that the Tree of harmony and elements of harmony are so magically powerful as to exist outside of time as a singularity (like how Unicron and the thirteen are multiversal singularities in transformers) that can essentially ignore time waves.

also it did talk about the tree of harmony sensing unbalance, and that somehow left the map...? its a bit of a stretch but ill go with it

The map itself was the one that caused Starlight Glimmer to become evil though as it was what lead the mane six to take her town from her.

Of course eventually that town needed to be resolved, but it seems the Cutie Map forgot to come up with a backup plan.

The map was pretty underwhelming this season. Not only was it not really used much to explore Equestria but it also just seemed a bit sporadic with its rules. Also, anyone else notice that Rainbow Power pretty much doesn't exist now? It wasn't used at all in season 5.

Well, there was do princesses dream of magical sheep, but that was a dream and not even them just figments. So its highly possible the mane six simply no longer HAVE that power anymore and need to find new macguffins to do EOH magic.

yeah i agree

it felt like they should have used the rainbow power at least a bit plot wise speaking, though to be honest I thought it was a little cheesy and overdone
