Males in the show.

I'm in agreement, I'd like to see some more male character development in the show.

And Soarin.

Eeyup, there's some male development there. "MY PIE!" he cried, his tasty treat nearly crashing to the floor, as Rainbow Dash barely managed to save it. :derp:

Heh, well there's his role in rainbow falls. While I think that's a bad episode, I liked seeing at least a little more of soarin in it, since it shows that he's not really the most assertive individual around.

A lot of the male background ponies don't fit in these roles. :) And I like them.

EDIT: Correction: They are actually one-dimensional, but that's only cause they're background ponies. :P

I'd say it's alright for this to primarily focus on female characters as most shows are already dominated by male characters and you can't have just an endless amount of characters to focus on. So for the time being I say let it be an all female show.

No matter how hard I try these ponies will simply never leave me.

Am I the only one here noticing that a big part of Ponyville's population is made of female? And that the males are very few to appear on screen when there is a big gathering at the town center for exemple?

you are now realizing what the brony fandom realized in season 1 :P

its why all the "Matriarchy" fanon sprang up XD

Other cities that the show has showed since the early days have made a good effort to make things far more balanced though.

Don't get my hopes up for more male development?

To be honest, I think this season showed a very real intent of the writers to start developing the male characters more, since we've gotten a big mac episode as well as spike and discord episodes.

Specifically I think the big mac episode is a huge break in precedent as he's the first secondary pony to get real focus (even if its co-starring with Applebloom) and shows that they're willing to develop other males besides spike.

I'm  hoping for some soarin in Season 6 myself! :D

I realised in since season 1. I just didn't find anyone nor participated in any forum to talk about it with.

I hope that's the case. Maybe they'll finally do something with Flash Sentry, both human and pony, instead of treating him like an accident child they try to ignore like he never happened. Seriously, was I the only one pissed at how he was treated in Friendship Games?

MLP seems to be originally aimed at little girls, like the previous generations of MLP. I went back to the first episodes and they had a pretty girly feel to them. In a show for little girls, there will probably mostly be female characters, and characters of the opposite sex from the aimed audience gender don't add much to the show. After all the years of bronies existing, Hasbro might not know how to focus more on male characters.

I have several layers of thoughts on this.

On one hand, there are obviously far more female characters than male, including all the main characters (save one, if you count Spike.) However... I think that this is to be expected. Whatever popular culture may say, men and women are naturally different. Does that mean that no guys will like this show? Even if there weren't a large community of bronies to answer that question, I'm a guy. Does it mean that no girls will like something like Star Wars? Of course not. I have many female friends who think Star Wars is great. But at the same time, my little brothers gag at any reference to MLP, and would try to disown me if they knew I watch it. My sister, mom, and many of my female friends haven't seen all of the Star Wars movies (or, in some cases, even one). Guys and girls are born different, both physically and mentally. We have different strengths, different weaknesses, and different interests. And of course there's variation in there, but this is primarily a little girl's show.

To my understanding, Lauren Faust wasn't trying to make it not a little girl's show, she was trying to change what "little girl's show"" means. She didn't like that when people say that, what they mean is, "it's stupid, it has no plot, and the characters are bland." And in that sense, I agree with her. Aiming a show at kids is no excuse to do a bad job with it.

Now, I will admit that, as a guy, I would like to see a little more male character development. (This is partly based on my childhood, because I grew up surrounded by girls who would ditch me rather often.) But I can understand why there aren't a whole lot of male characters, and I do think that they're at least getting better about the development. What I'd really like to see is a guy with friends. We don't really see Big Mac talking to... Well, anypony, really, and same goes for many other males, who are seen to have one friend or fewer. And I'd also like to see a male character that's enough like me for me to relate easily to him, but that's a stretch for any show. XD

Actually, males are much more favorited and in power, than females. We've seen only Discord, Shining and Big Mac crying in the show. (Spike is a kid, so I don't count him). Compare it to the amount of females, crying. All females are weak cry babies, while males save their composure and actually get the things done.

MLP was originally and obviously aimed at young girls. Although the team behind MLP:FiM has long since recognized the demographic for the show is in vastly different than the initial target audience, I wouldn't change the representation. The media is still severely lacking interest in female-centric protagonists- even rarer in the case where the females almost entirely get the noticeable development. In most cases personally, regardless of my biological sex, I have related to male characters. It's certainly not required that biological factors need to be involved for realistic characterization, or just to relate to character at all. There is definitely a prominent bias with representation in the industry. Is it safe to say MLP doesn't need a male character to take the spotlight and is perfectly fine the way it is? We certainly don't have a show akin to it.

I do agree with what your point on Yamazaki, but I don't really understand what you said about Syaoran. How exactly did they make homosexuality seem like a joke? And yes, I am fully aware that I am responding to a thread that hasn't been active in 4 years.

The gender of the characters shouldn't be important. I hate when people try to force characters just because of gender or race... so on. The show is fine the way it is.
