Do You Think Sunset Shimmer Counts As a "Mane" Character?

I honestly don't see how she could be said NOT to be a mane character considering the staff have made the movies revolve around her completely as its character with the others background supporters of her

She's not just *A* mane character, she is THE mane character, its even more lopsided than the FIM franchise there XD
Now, you can say that there's issues due to her not being involved in the FIM series and only in the EQG series, but that's about the only argument against her

Hmmm, what about... noooooo? She appeared in only two movies, and people consider her part of the mane six? Come on guys, the mane six is composed of the pony elements of harmony, not the human ones; so no, for me she isn't part of THE mane six, but could be considered a member of the human one

One thing I really wonder about is how well sunset is selling, toywise.

Specifically, it seems like she gets alot less toy attention than the other 6, while simultaneusly having a very large central character push in plot importance; this just seems strange given what hasbro's usual demands for toy focus is (they wouldn't want a focus around a character that they weren't expecting to sell alot of toys of after all for simple financial reasons).

 

So it just seems strange looking at toys being made. (though, on that note, Legend of the everfree seems strange in that neither twilight OR sunset have a deluxe special doll compared to past trends for RR and FG)

I count her as the lead of the EQG movies pretty much, but since she's never been seen outside the movies I can't really call her a Mane character in FiM as a whole. I really wish I could, though.

Sunset Shimmer is a EQG only character, so no, she isn't one of the Mane Six. At this rate, Starlight Glimmer is closer to being the eighth Mane character than SS is.

In my opinion she is the replacement to twilight sparkle in the EqG universe so I guess maybe she would be part of the mane 6 that way. But now with the recent addition of the twilight from friendship games I question wether or not sunset is not gonna have that big of a role anymore.

I would say that yes she is absolutely considered a mane character. Now I would also say that her status as a mane character isn't as prominent as Twilight or any of the others in the Mane 6.

I wouldn't put it down so much that she's super popular so much as that her fans are more fervent/loud about it than the other fans. Plus, FG was somewhat Divisive compared to RR. While rainbow rocks tended to have alot more people of all pony fans enjoy it and warm up to the EQG series, it seems like, overwhelmingly, the ones who enjoyed FG are fans who like SS as a character, while those who disliked FG tend to be those who are neutral or negative towards SS.

There's alot more advertising (so to speak) of the other 6 characters than there is of SS though, since the other 6 get full screentime in the Normal FIM series while sunset only gets advertised in the EQG movies. As such, she's at a disadvantage.

That being said, I kind of wonder if hasbro will stay on board with her as the Central character (She's more important than Sci twilight currently for example) if she doesn't bring in sales: Money talks and Hasbro seems like the type to meddle if they don't feel their money's being used correctly (look at how they'd mandate Transformers appearances in the original G1 and importance based on toy sales for example).

Well, it depends. Technically, she isn't, since the Equestria Girls franchise isn't DIRECTLY connected to FIM, but a lot of people (including myself) like to count her as part of the mane cast, simply cuz she's such a good character.  So, it mostly depends on how you look at it.

If Sunset isn't getting a ton of merchandise it stands to reason that she's not selling well. She has a massive handicap compared to the other 6 after all due to not having any advertisement in the "offseason" via FIM, like the other 6 do.

make her a protoge of Luna. They're similar enough, with past mistakes and personality to have the kind of mentor/student relationship where they both can learn and grow from each other, rather than what Sunbutt had with Twilight, or what Twi has with Starlight, which doesn't or hasn't left much growing for the teacher alongside their student.

I think it's half and half when it comes to Sunset being part of the Mane Six. Sure, she's friends with them and has been involved in two villain defeats so far, but does it really count when she's only in the Equestria Girls movies and is friends with only the human counterparts plus Twilight? What do you think?

Sadly, given glimmer's push in the group as a new seventh, I don't think we have much of a choice there XD

I wouldn't put it past hasbro to start trying to use the term mane seven in advertising stuff to push Starlight glimmer through, since they've used Mane six before in advertising.

the sad thing is, I may not be a big fan of sunset shimmer, but I got to say, At least Sunset has a *Good* backstory compared to starlight. Sunset was the ex-student of Celestia and was shown in the comics to have a desire to become an alicorn at the core of her evil-- a great parallel to twilight and an explanation for why she's so powerful, being a unicorn trained by Celestia herself with a good reason for why she's on par with twilight.

Starlight is... just a random unicorn from nowhere who's Super god mode hax powerful because "Reasons" with a VERY poor justification for evil that has absolutely nothing in common with twilight as a foil :/

 

 

Regardless of anything else, sunset is, on paper, far better of a character concept and character than starlight. Not that I want EITHER, but if either had to be in it, sunset has more right IMO.

She's a character in a spin-off that is only loosely related to FiM, she may inhabit Twilight's space in the 'huMane six' in EQG, but as far as I'm aware, EQG is not considered canon within FiM.

I wasn't suggesting that I prefer Starlight, more that by having Starlight in FiM there is no need for Sunset, as the two characters (post reformation only) are basically the same anyway, apart from design of course, which goes without saying.

I know it has been stated that the EQG films are canon, but I think that such a statement is null and void if it isn't actually backed up with content.  Regardless of what the writers may say on twatter, they have deliberately and intentionally avoided making any mention whatsoever of EQG in FiM, and as the old adage goes, actions speak louder than words.  But hey, that's just my own take on it, I will happily accept EQG as canon to FiM if they ever give me a reason to.

Unfortunately, it doesn't translate nearly as well to a pony as it does to a human since Aria has clothing items to help accentuate and harmonize with her color scheme while Starlight has... just herself, which makes her come off pretty poorly IMO.

I probably sound like a broken record, but I honestly just hate starlight's color/design.
